Free-agent CB Bodden sticking with Patriots

Posted: March 8th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff

Free-agent CB Leigh Bodden visited the Texans but has decided to return to the Patriots, NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported Monday night.

Bodden came to New England last season and had five interceptions. He drew interest from the Texans and Steelers, then visited Houston on Sunday night.

Bodden told Fox 26 Sports at Houston’s Hobby Airport that he had visits scheduled with other teams besides the Texans, “but hopefully I don’t need it.” It ended up that he didn’t, because he stayed with New England.

Bodden has 345 tackles and 18 interceptions in a seven-year NFL career that has included stops in Cleveland and Detroit.

UPDATE: NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported Tuesday that Bodden received a five-year, $28.5 million contract, with $10 million guaranteed, according to a league source.

Very good move by the Pats. I think the focus as of late (besides A. Thomas) has been to sign vets on the defense and this guy could very well play out the entire contract in NE. He is a nice steady presence back there.

New England has done a good job of keeping guys. They lost Jarvis Green but I believe they will find a good 3-4 DE in the draft to raplces him. They keep VW, now Bodden, those a re big signings, I know Miami fans would have loved the VW Bus.

If the Pats were a legit SB contender (as opposed to an ok playoff team), most NE fans would be fine with keeping their key guys and going back to battle. However, NE has and still has a number of flaws that have not been addressed. So fielding the same team just with some new rookies IMO still leaves them as a good but not great team. And I don't think signing a bunch of 30 year old FAs will be the answer. One certainly has to wonder what the master plan is heading forward. I don't think the sky is falling for the Pats but I'm not sure they were so good that they could forgo pickinjg up some other guys via FA or trade.I realize we can't really evaluate any of the teams until September and a lot can and will change between now and then, but the Pats still need help in all three phases of the game and BB now has no coordinators (when playcalling has been suspect).
