Cecil Cooper fired (1 Viewer)

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have relieved Cecil Cooper of his managerial duties, General Manager Ed Wade announced today. Third-base coach Dave Clark will take over as manager on an interim basis through the remainder of the 2009 season.

The Astros will host a 4 p.m. press conference this afternoon in the Press Conference Room at Minute Maid Park, during which Ed Wade, Dave Clark, Drayton McLane and Tal Smith will be available to the media. The Astros clubhouse will remain closed until after the press conference.

"Cecil Cooper has given his all to the Houston Astros," Wade said. "Decisions like this are never easy, but we believe that a change in direction on the field is in order. By making the move today, we will have the ability to evaluate other facets of our operation as we move into the offseason."

Cooper, 59, had been manager of the Astros since August 27, 2007. In his tenure, he compiled a 171-170 record, including a 70-79 mark this season through Sunday. Prior to being named manager, Cooper had served as the Astros bench coach since the start of the 2005 season.

This will be the first stint as a Major League manager for the 47-year-old Clark, who joined the Astros Major League coaching staff this season. Prior to that, he served as manager of the Round Rock Express (AAA) in 2008 and manager of the Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) from 2005-2007. He led Corpus Christi to the Texas League Championship in 2006, during which he was named that league's Manager of the Year. Clark also managed in the Pirates system in 2004, guiding the Hickory Crawdads (A) to the South Atlantic League title with an 85-55 record.

Al Pedrique, the Astros minor league field coordinator, will replace Clark as the big league club's third-base coach through the remainder of the season. Pedrique will resume his field coordinator duties after the season.

Wade said that a full search for a new manager will be conducted in the offseason and that Clark is considered a candidate. The 2010 coaching staff will be determined after the new manager is hired.
