Cedric Benson arrested in Texas (1 Viewer)

http://twitter.com/#/RickyDoyle/status/92614402938900480

Former #UT running back Cedric Benson has been arrested & charged with assault on a family member. In Travis County Jail.
Will you break out your Scott jersey now? :lmao:
No, because the Bengals will definitely sign a RB that will prevent Scott from starting. Maybe they take a look at Ronnie Brown or Joesph Addai. I believe I read that somewhere. The Bengals don't see Scott as a 3 down back.

Agree Scott won't ever be the starter if they have a choice. Willis McGahee would be a nice fit IMO.

Mike Brown must be doing a dance. It just means he can re-sign Benson more cheaply now.
Don't you think he's looking at a suspension after already been given a mulligan by the commish?
I'd say too soon to tell. Arrest for assault on a family member could be a lot of things, from a major beat down to throwing a beer in a bro-in-law's face at a family reunion. All we have so far is one little vague tweet with no real info. And we also don't yet know whether lockout period transgressions will be punished or swept under the rug. And there's the matter of the commish maybe no longer being judge, jury, and executioner. The new CBA will have some things to say about Goodell's power in this regard.Bottom line is Benson will be a Bengal. They were going to work hard to re-sign him before this, and if any team overlooks arrests, it's them. It certainly doesn't make him more likely to sign with another, less forgiving, team.

That is also a lot of assumptions.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member early Sunday morning in Central Texas.

No other details were available from the Travis County sheriff's office regarding the Class A misdemeanor charge. Benson will be a free agent once a new collective-bargaining agreement is in place.

Benson's latest legal trouble comes a little more than a year after an arrest involving an alleged bar fight in Texas, which didn't result in a discipline from the NFL.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said then that he was satisfied Benson understood his responsibilities as an NFL player and a public figure after Benson met with Goodell and other league officials.

Goodell has stated players will still be subject to review and discipline under the personal-conduct policy for potential violations during the lockout.

My first and second paragraphs had no assumptions, they basically said there's a lot unknown at this point.Third paragraph IMO is a more reasonable assumption, given that we're talking about the Bengals, than to assume it creates a greater chance of him signing elsewhere. They have a long history of overlooking player issues and of taking in problem children because they can be had cheaper.Hell, Ocho hit his own coach in the mouth and they swept it under the rug. All they care about is whether the guy can get the job done for them on the field.

....or they could not resign him and sign someone else like Ronnie Brown, DeAngelo Williams, or Joseph Addai.

Yes, they could. Whenever we're dealing with speculation there are always going to be alternatives (not DWill though, too pricey). But with a shortened offseason and the likelihood of a rookie QB starting, my best guess is they want the continuity of Benson coming back for pass protect and to churn out a lot of carries. And now he'll have less leverage and can be had cheaper. FF is all about speculation and best guesses. That's mine.Gotta run. See ya Chuckster!

Some of those options I mentioned are just as cheap as you perceive Benson, only with less headaches.

Ronnie Brown seems like a very good fit. Probably less expensive than Benson, and arguably more talented. Very obviously a huge step up in character.

While the guy has had bad luck on the injury front, he barely has any miles. He just has 1300 touches in the NFL and roughly 570 in college. The real question is how have the injuries impacted the wear and tear. In the end, I think he may turn out to be the best "bang for the buck" RB signing this offseason.

Well, while cincy loves old dallas players maybe MB3. Seems like a nice change of pace for scott and barber still does a great job of protecting the qb. Seems like a good fit and at this point in his career would allow scott to be on the field more.

this guys reminds me of lawrence phillips all the talent in the world but just cant seem to get right with the Lord and stop making bad decision makeing processes he would probably do well to seek counseling and regularly meet with a group of recovered felons to discusss how his choices can have a negative impact on his life and most importantly on his family and fans who love him and maybe they could get brent wiener texter favre in there too but he would probably burst into flames when he walked into church

Benson did the Bengals a favor, saving them from their own typical insane decision making. Does this clown have pictures of someone or what? He had one decent half season, after looking like a complete bust, has had multiple arrests throughout his career, and was horrific last year (barely averaged 3 ypc).

Why was this guy somehow immune from the league-wide trend towards rbbc? Virtually any free agent back they bring in there will be a huge upgrade.

So long as we're speculating, Benson may not even be in the NFL. He's facing a year in jail.
According to an arrest affidavit, the former roommate contacted police about 5 a.m. and said "a hostile and aggressive Benson" had approached him at West Fifth and Guadalupe streets minutes before and said they needed to talk. The man, whom the arrest affidavit identified as Charles Clavens, told police that they were arguing about their living arrangements when Benson punched him several times in the face, resulting in severe injuries, the affidavit said.

Bassett said Sunday that the former roommate, whom he declined to name, was someone Benson had been friends with for a long time and whom he knew through the football community. He had been living at Benson's house for a few weeks, Bassett said, but Benson had asked the man to leave three or four days ago. The friend did leave, but then the two men ran into each other early Sunday and got into a fight, Bassett said.

"I think this was a conflict between two men who used to be friends," Bassett said.

Benson was arrested and booked into jail at 6:42 a.m. Sunday, jail records show. The Class A misdemeanor charge is punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and up to one year in jail. The family violence assault charge can be levied when a member of a person's household is involved, not specifically a relative.

Benson details not pretty -- according to a police affidavit, Benson approached roommate Charles Clavens at 5th and Guadalupe ...Clavens says the two began arguing about living arrangements when Benson hit him several times with closed fists, causing severe injury.Clavens injuries: "complaint of pain ... severe bleeding from the mouth, possible loss of teeth and massive swelling of the left cheek."

not sure where I heard it a few months back, but I thought I saw something about Cincy being interested in Michael Bush if he became a FA......I know OAK would like to keep him, but what is his status anyway...?

eh, i dont think benson has "all the talent in the world." hes ok, doesnt seem explosive or with a high end speed. nothing special in agility, balance or power. has a sneaky burst at times and pretty good vision to make up for his seeming lack of elite athleticism, at least compared to the other freaks that are nfl rbs.as a bungle fan, this is good and bad. id prefer benson gonzo and more carries to bernard and a free agent like mb3, michael bush, hell jason snelling. also, i believe benson was looking at 4-6m/year, and id def prefer to toss 10m to deangelo. bengals are arbitrarily cheap, remember the signed laverneus coles for 28m over 4 seasons and antonio bryant to the same contract. so the good is that it means the bengals will likely be able to get benson for cheaper.edit: lol shoulda read a few more posts, seems a great chance he gets severly punished and is out of the league. very good for the bengals! bad for benson and the dude who got pummeled tho.

Benson has been ordered to stay at least 200 yards away from Clavens.

Ced looked confused, so someone whispered to him "65 carries away."

"Oh, OK, gotcha" said Ced.

He's being labeled a 3 year player, not four, so that means he will be a RFA not an UFA. That means the 1st and 3rd round tender on him will probably keep him in Oakland.

This story is getting really interesting...

Pics posted of the destruction he did to the guy's face; this was a brutal beatdown.

TMZ Story

From the time the story broke, it seemed odd that he was being charged with assault of a family member for beating up a former friend and roommate.

Now there are stories floating around that the former roommate is gay and he and Benson were a little more than friends. If true, it would seem to fit with the "family assault" charge.

It might have been nice if you actually took the time to read the tread before you posted as you would have found:

Good example of how snippets of information in the modern era screw things up. First he's a family member and then a room mate. Why would you call this guy a room mate? Benson is a grown man making millions of dollars a year, I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a "roomie" to split the rent with. If a friend stays with me for a few weeks, he's not a room mate, he's living in my house.

Wow. I hadn't caught this. Also, with the CBA and lockout just about over, he faces NFL sanctions as well. Though, his crime right now is more important.
