SI - ArticleCedric Benson got the bulk of the first-team carries at minicamp again Saturday, but there will not be a rush to judgment to determine who the Bears' starting running back will be three months from now.
The battle between Benson, the first-round pick last year, and disgruntled veteran Thomas Jones figures to be one of the highlights of training camp and the preseason, a fact not lost on Benson.
''I have a good idea that's what it's looking like,'' he said. ''The good thing about it is it gives me the opportunity to showcase some stuff and to put all the talk behind and settle it. I guess it can also be bad in that it can pose a distraction maybe to the team as a whole or to some individuals. I don't know.
''But I don't have any vision of what is going to happen.''
Benson does know he doesn't want to relinquish his role with the first team, a spot he moved into when Jones bolted from the voluntary offseason program in April
Thomas Jones has no leverage here. He may have just handed away his starting spot. If this holds true I see Benson moving into the late second in fantasy drafts. It will be interesting to follow this this summer.LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- It's only June, but not too early in the NFL schedule for the Chicago Bears to make a lineup change.
On the first day of the Bears' three-day mini-camp Friday, coach Lovie Smith moved All-Pro linebacker Lance Briggs and 1,300-yard rusher Thomas Jones to the second string because both players failed to participate in the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program.
"We have a starting rotation and that's how it is," Smith said. "In order to be at the top of the starting rotation, you have to be here. So that's how it is."
Cedric Benson replaced Jones with the first team while Briggs' weakside linebacker spot was manned by Leon Joe.
