Cedric Houston (1 Viewer)

I've been watching him since the end of last season knowing that Curtis Martin couldn't play forever. Well, CMart is out of the picture and Cedric is still buried in the depth chart. Have the Jets decided to go in a completely different direction, or are they just giving him time to develop? Is he worth keeping an eye on anymore with Barlow and Blaylock in town?

Pretty much a Honda, but..... I think Houston could be the starter by week 8 to week 10.... unless Barlow shows that he is better than what he showed in SF. Most teams keep 6 RB's, usually 3 RB's and 3 FB's. The FB's are all usually special teams guys as well. However, the Jets kept 4 RB's (Blaylock, Barlow, Houston and Washington) and 2 FB's. Neither Houston or Barlow play ST's. So, Houston has to be considered a threat to play this year.... or they would have cut him. Much depends on how well Blaylock and Barlow play, especially in pass blocking. Houston saved his roster spot with that 25 for 108 performance in the last preseason game.

I don't think the franchise RB is out of college yet, but Houston has upside for this year, and as a solid back up after that.

I'm sitting on him in one of my leagues.

I also think he will get his shot to start

before the halfway point of the NFL season.

i respect rovers' assessment of the jets. i know he follows them strongly. i would trade/drop houston in redraft and look to pick up a rb with a greater ceiling. i would much rather like having a rb like harrison, morency or calhoun. i guess it is personal preference. but, even in an ideal situation, i cannot see houston going off and being a star and a must start.

If the Jets have bad enough luck to start the 4th stringer (Houston), they'll be drafting a RB pretty high anyways. If you are saving Houston for his 1 start (perhaps in a useless week 17?), you may as well not carry anyone in that roster spot.

I understand many don't think much of Houston.... but to call him RB #4 is simply flat out incorrect. I don't believe this, but he IS listed as the #2 RB at the Jets site.... I'm sure he's #3 though. The problem is that both Blaylock and Washington are CoP 3rd down backs..... that makes Houston the real back up for Barlow, as they are the only two that can hold up to 25 touches/week (my opinion). As for when the Jets take an RB next year, I agree..... that will be the first round pick, depending on where they land and what RB's are on the board. I disagree on what Houston's value might be later this year. I think as a 5th RB, roster size allowing, he could be a very nice flyer by week 8 to 10. I think there is a real chance he could be a 25 touch RB by then, and you can never have enough starting RB's. If he lasts until the 16th round in O only 12 team redrafts, he's pretty darned good there.

I liked Houston last year as a value Dynasty pick. His recovery from thyroid condition and pretty solid college play are reasons to like his upside. I have since cooled on his value even before the Barlow trade and I do not think he will be a long term answer for the Jets as anything but Rb depth. He showed he can play at this level last year in the play time he recieved but did not really do anything exceptional with his opportunity.

I do think there will be a time during the 2006 season that he will get an opportunity to play again. What I would look to do if you have a deep roster is wait for Houston to put up some productive numbers and then trade him for whatever you can get.

At one point during this offseason I had his value at somthing like a 2nd round rookie pick. That is the highest I have ever valued him. I think his value has fallen some since then to somthing more like a 3rd round rookie pick in 07. I will be looking to trade him off at that value when the opportunity presents itself.

There is still a very small chance that when given the opportunity he plays outstanding. If this happens then I could see his value going up and possibly being a hold. But he would have to show much more than he did last season for my perspective of his value to change.

After he was declared inactive today, it seems like Houston is on the team for depth.

Didn't see the game, but looking at the boxscore, the Jets seemed more effective passing than running today. While Blaylock and Barlow did the job they needed to do to seal a victory, their YPC don't exactly inspire the confidence you need in a starting back.

So on one hand, Houston's contribution to the team this week was deemed unnecessary. On the other hand, it's not as if Blaylock and Barlow lit up the field.

How do people stand on Houston and the Jets RB situation moving forward?

I have him on my dynasty roster and am just going to hold him to see what develops. He doesn't exactly have a stud ahead of him on the roster, so it's not like the team won't give him a shot if things don't work out with Barlow or Blaylock.

Blaylock did not impress me today.... Barlow was much better with fewer touches. I still think Houston could be a value in the second half of the season.

I think so, too. I see Blaylock moving more into a situational role, and the jury is still out which Barlow will show up - the guy that looked fierce after he first took over from Hearst, or the sluggish goy of the past few years. If Barlow doesn't show much, don't rule out Houston. Or maybe even Washington for that matter.
