Chad Johnson has officially changed his name to "Chad Ocho Cinco. (1 Viewer)

I agree, Ali changed his name for different reasons. He was pretty hated for it as well. People thought he didn't have a good enough reason to change it.

"Chad Ocho Cinco" is already a suggestion when you begin typing in Google, btw.

Is "Ocho Cinco" Johnson's new muslum name?

woops! was that comment not politically correct? darn it! so what you saying?
I'm saying it was completely stupid.
No. what is stupid here is LEGALLY CHANGING YOUR LAST NAME TO OCHO CINCO!
The name change will net him quite a large stack of cash. Exactly how is that stupid?
:excited: i'm sure he's got enough money. there are things called values and principles. changing your last name to make money is selling out, imo. now, obviously you think this is cool. i think it's lame. we disagree.
Actually I don't particularly care. I'm a bit unsure as to what principles and values someone could be violating by changing their name. If a woman gets married and changes her name does that bother you?? What if she decided to keep her maiden name? Why does his name change bother anyone that much?

It annoys me, but no more or less than any of the other attention whoring he does. He is probably a fun guy to hang out with but I find screaming "LOOK AT ME!!!!" lame regardless of who it is.

Someone changing their name is probably about as annoying as someone using the number "3" to represent the letter "E" in their name. Neither is really a big deal unless you let it be.

Or someone telling others what they should or shouldn't find annoying.

This tantrum tactic seems to work for WRs in their prime. KJ and TO come to mind. Hopefully it inspires him to fantasy stardome, but I doubt it. (I just drafted him)

His parents must be proud. (Im not sure of his upbringing but this is the first thing that came to mind.)

About the only thing more foolish than Chad Johnson changing his name, is anyone wanting to buy his jersey afterwards.

you're kidding, right? how can anyone compare Ali, or a woman changing her maiden name to chad johnson changing his name to ocho cinco? he's trying to be extreme, and to me it just comes off tacky. maybe AP will change his name to purple jesus.meh. i guess i'm more bothered by people that think its "cool". again, it comes down to what we value about football. whatever, to each his own.

I think it's fantastic.I think I'd really enjoy hanging out and having a beer with Chad Ocho Cinco.
I dig the fact that it may be intended as a slap to the NFL for their silly fines, but come on now...If he thinks this will make him more $ in endorsements, I think he is misinformed, or he is just a moron...

I try not to concern myself with the decisions and actions of others that have no impact on me or those close to me. As long as this is something he really wants to do, I applaud him.I also think it's hilarious that there will be someone in the world with the last name of Ocho Cinco. As far as endorsements, I think it actually will net him more in endorsements. Unless NFLPA rules have changed or I completely forgot them, he won't personally see any increase in $$ from jersey sales as that is all licensed by the NFLPA. But, I'd venture to guess that there will be plenty of producers of goods that would love to use a colorful guy with an interesting nickname, such as "Ocho Cinco." I'm sure there will be plenty of market testing to see what happens to his popularity if the name becomes "official." If nothing else, it will get him more publicity.

He gets a percentage of all of his jersey sales.

I'm just wondering what pricinples someone violates when they change their name. He could change his name to Max Power, what difference does his name make? He is still the same player, if Peterson changed his name to "All Day" would that make his football performance any different? It seems that you just don't like the business end of thing showing itself in football. Whatever you value about football keep in mind that it is a business pure and simple, you are just starting to see the players more aggresive to capatalize on it.

I'm surprised someone is "bothered" by other people thinking Chad's name change is "cool". Are you Paul Zimmerman's alias?

None. I'm sure mom is so proud. They should change the NFL's name to "Ringling Bros" or some such. In fact Chad whoever-o should change his name to Barnum Bailey.

Yea, one beer is about as long as I'd be able to take before I'd have to change the subject to something other than Ocho Cinco.

I think it is foolish IMHO. I think your surname is something to be proud of as it represents your family and all it hard work and struggle through life. Ocho Cinco.....that doesn't even mean "85" like his number it means "8" "5" maybe he could brush up on his Spanish a little bit before making the change.

although i do find it rather silly, i cant knock the guy for making what looks like a very smart business move. How many people are talking about the name change now instead of the supposedly "bum shoulder" that was supposed to ruin his season? Like it or hate it, its going to be one of the top selling jerseys this year and he will see his chunk of that. The change to ocho cinco is exactly what he meant to do. the moniker of "8" "5" was attached(mostly self imposed) to johnson since he's come into the league. he's referred to himself(amongst all the other names) as "8" "5". he doesn't refer to himself as "85", which is why he chose ocho cinco. IMO

"John Charles Carter"
The difference with movie stars is that they adopt stage names but they don't officially change their names. In Heston's (John Charles Carter) case he took the name of his step father (a very common practice in his day to avoid the stigma of "last" name issue) at the age of 10. He didn't change his name to get the attention of the media or as an outcry to get noticed.

He legally changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco on August 29, 2008. The NFL and the Cincinnati Bengals decided to call him Chad Ocho Cinco in all affairs, and he will be allowed to have it on the back of his jersey.
wikipedia
Chad Johnson is no more. It's officially Chad Ocho Cinco in the NFL.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Thursday that they have begun "the process of listing the former Chad Johnson as Chad Ocho Cinco for all club business, per the legal change of his surname effected in Florida.

"The list of appropriate changes will include Ocho Cinco wearing his new surname on the back of his jersey for Sunday's season opener at Baltimore."
ESPN :headbang:

I think that CJ is a moran for the most part and his antics are getting old... he is really pressing to come up with new material (most of his antics last year were one big  ).

However, I really like this one, not because I don't think he's a moran anymore, but because he found a way to stick to the NFL and circumvent some of their super-strict rules.

At the same time, can you imagine any other player doing this without being called a major media-whore, such as Favre changing his name to Brett Cuatro?

Maybe his family is nothing to be proud of.Or maybe he doesn't have to live by your principles.I think it was very cool to go to live scoring and see 'Chad Ocho Cinco'.How can anyone not find this funny? And make no mistake, he will find a way to make money off this. He's a very smart businessman.

Yeah, I hate those stupid morans.

Did anyone else see the recent Best Damn Sports Show where the guys were talking about Chad changing his name? I SWEAR they frequent the shark pool and read this thread!!! One guy was like "There's too many Johnson's in the league anyway" and another was like "At least he's not doing cocaine, beating up his girlfriend, etc."

Best Damn staff, if you are out there, send me a writer's cheque for stealing my material :excited:

It was pretty weird to see that on my roster today. Now imagine he gets his wish to be traded and the 85 jersey is being worn by another player. :lmao:BTW, according to D Woodson and M Schlereth - and I'm pretty sure they were being serious - players do call each other "Eight Five" vs. Eighty-Five.

So when is MFL going to update his name? I find myself checking hourly.
I actually got the following posted on our CBS site...Ocho CincoAs of Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, Chad Johnson will become Chad Ocho Cinco in the player pool. Please keep that in mind when you are looking for him.

Well technically if Chad is a descendant of formerly enslaved African Americans, then Johnson wouldn't necessarily be a surname to be proud of. Slaves took the surnames of their owners for census purposes. Now I don't know the history of Chad's ancestors or how they came by the name of Johnson, but that would be quite a different perspective on what the name could represent and all the "hard work and struggle" associated with it.Maybe Ocho Cinco isn't so bad after all... :lmao:

I thought he changed his name to Ocho Cinco because he wears #85.

But after seeing his stat line for week 1, it seems more like prediction of how many receiving yards he'll have after week 4.

I may have just changed my stance on the issue. Come to think of it, being proud of things people who came before you and are long gone seems silly to me anyway.OK, Chad you now officially have my approval, and I am sure the fact that I withheld it up to this point has been keeping you up nights. Just put up another game like yesterday when you play against me this year please.
