Dolphins' Chambers leaps into spotlight

DAVIE — If Chris Chambers had his dream season this year, he would average 18 points, five rebounds and six assists per game.

You see, Chambers, the Dolphins' high-flying receiver and a regular at Miami Heat games, would rather play in the NBA than the NFL.

"I'm about 99.9 percent sure of that," said Chambers, who played basketball as a freshman at Wisconsin. "It seems like a fun game ... and you play so many games, so it's easy to get in the groove, and you travel so much."

A former teammate vouches for Chambers' basketball ability.

"Chris is such a great athlete he probably could have played in the NBA if he focused just on basketball," said Buffalo Bills receiver Lee Evans, who went to high school and college with Chambers and faces him Sunday in the Dolphins' home opener.

"He's quick and a good ballhandler," Evans said. "He could shoot, but he was also so good at breaking people down and getting to the hoop. You see him on the football field. He's so long and athletic, he makes it look easy. He does things so naturally."

Chambers said he knows there are pros and cons to NBA life, "but it seems like a pretty nice lifestyle," he said.

The NFL has been good to him, too.

Chambers, at 5-feet-11 and 210 pounds, earned his first Pro Bowl berth last season, his sixth in the league. His outstanding jumping ability, strong hands and knack for eye-popping catches helped make him the Dolphins' top receiver.

"I put him in the top five receivers in this league," said Joe Theismann, the former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst.

Chambers' success late last season didn't carry over to the opener. In the 28-17 loss at Pittsburgh, he had a quiet night, with five catches for 59 yards, all of those in the second half.

Chambers, who has said he likes to get the ball early to get a feel for the game, didn't complain.

"We were spreading the ball around a little bit," he said. "I had a couple of shots early in the game, but we didn't connect on them."

Coach Nick Saban said the club needs to make "a conscious effort" to get Chambers involved early, starting Sunday against Buffalo. "But sometimes what the other team does has a little bit to do with that, too," he said.

Chambers had his career-best game against the Bills in December at Dolphin Stadium, with 15 receptions for 238 yards and a touchdown. In nine career games against Buffalo, Chambers has 43 receptions for 610 yards (14.2 average) and six touchdowns.

The Bills have a new coach (#### Jauron) and defensive coordinator (Perry Fewell), but Chambers expects sixth-year cornerback Nate Clements to be assigned to him, as usual.

And Chambers expects to find success with quarterback Daunte Culpepper once they get used to each other.

"I remember our first game, when Gus (Frerotte) was here and balls were all over the place," Chambers said. "I know it's going to come a little faster this year."

Theismann is a joke . . .

and Chambers needs to worry about football, he should keep his dreams to himself . . .

That must have been a darn good High School football team. Geesh.

Maybe he should play basketball, then he might have a chance to become a stud.

A top 5 WR ( with worthless Culpepper throwing him the rock ) Ah Ah Ah AH Ah Ah Ah AH AH .

I actually played in an All Star Basketball Game with Chambers in Ohio. It was the Penn Ohio classic. It took place in Sharon PA. For some reason I can't remember how he played. I also played two years of AAU with Lavar Arrington. We played on a team called Metro Index based out of Pittsburgh. Lavar couldn't shot a lick but he would still dominate the games. We would be playing some of the best teams in the country and he would dominate on pure athletic ability. It was pretty crazy to see in person.

At 5'11", Chambers would in today's NBA be a modern day equivalent of an athletic Spud Webb. Methinks he needs to stick with football.

BTW, I like the comment by Saban about getting him the football. And yes, Ike Taylor did have a little hand in denying Chambers although C-Pepp's propensity to hurl shoe string dying quails didn't help matters much.

I'll say this about Chambers, he plays bigger than his 5'11 frame in the NFL and I'd think that'd be the case on the court, too

Chambers as a basketball player: He would be running down the court, a teammate would pass him the ball, and the ball would slip through his hands and go out of bounds.

lavar was sick in at north hills. so was brandon short at mckeesport.i remember a 3-on-3 tournament we were in and lavar came down and shattered one of the backboards. 2 plays later, brandon shattered the other one. amazing atheletes. most people dont realize that lavar was a RB in high school, it was a sight to see him as a 6'3 freshman running OVER people.-biz-

I don't see the big deal...Chambers thinks he might enjoy playing another sport more...big f'ing deal.

Also, it's not ridiculous to say Chambers is a top 5 WR.

Sure it is.No justification to insert him in front of anyone on this list...

Harrison

Moss

Holt

Owens

Fitz

Smith

Johnson

As you posted in the Suggs thread. You simply have no clue. ;)
Chambers was the #5 WR in one of my dynasty leagues last year. Not as far fetched as some might think.Physically gifted, makes bad QBs look decent, not a "dee-dee-dee" in the head, and no off-the-field distractions. What else can one ask for?

When I saw 5'11, I did a double take. From watching him, I always thought he was 6'2 at least. (he does supposedly have very long arms so maybe that's part of it)

No it isn't very hard at all to put him in front of a couple of those:Harrison: agree

Holt: agree

Fitz: agree

Chad Johnson: not so sure, but lean to agree

Moss: Best start to a career of any of them, but OAK is in bad shape. I doubt he makes top 10.

Owens: Man, you must have a lot more faith in the DAL QB situation than I do

Smith: Hard to be top 5 when you miss the first 2 games. No way he ends the year in top 5.

something tells me Theisman wasn't talking about fantasy football..

i think he was talking about pure talent...

i don't agree with him but I really doubt he thinks that Steve Smith is not as good as Chambers because Chambers misses the first two weeks of the season.

Wow, strange.I guess I should have read all the posts, first.

I always thought that too. I saw a lot of him, being a Bills fan, and it wasn't until late last year, or something like that when I saw he was only 5'11". I would have sworn he was at least 6'-6'2"

I wish I was a little bit taller...

I wish I was a baller...

I wish I had a girl, who looked good, I would call her...

who wouldn't want to play in the nba instead of the nfl

larger contracts + longer career + more endorsements = more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

and if he stayed in Miami, a much better team.

Ever heard of Earl Boykins?
Physically gifted, makes bad QBs look decent, not a "dee-dee-dee" in the head, and no off-the-field distractions. What else can one ask for?
Consistent performance? Chambers plays like a top 5 WR at times, but a below average WR at others.

Evans attended Bedford High School, the same high school as former Wisconsin teammate and current Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers.

On Sunday December 4, 2005, it was a big day for the two former Wisconsin Badgers from Bedford High School during a game between the Bills and Dolphins. Evans set career highs with receiving yards (117) and touchdowns (3). Chambers set franchise records for receptions (15) and receiving yards (238) as well as scoring the game winning touchdown in the final seconds.

Spud was 5'6 in high heels. He wasn't anywhere near 5'11.

He could easily be top 5 WR GOING FORWARD.Harrison - OldSmith - banged upT.O. - trouble Moss - Oakland blows
:shrug:FitzgeraldHoltSmithJohnsonEdwardsWardBoldinSantana MossEvans, and a few others will have something to say about that.

That must have been a darn good High School football team. Geesh.
I think Gilbert Brown and Jerome Bettis went to the same HS and Brown was The Bus' fullback. Randy Moss and Jason Williams went to HS together also, won WV state hoops title and I think J-Will was the QB on the football team as well.

You're seriously putting Braylon Edwards ahead of Chris Chambers based on ... 34 catches? 3 TDs?

The comment was "top 5 WR GOING FORWARD." my reply was Edwards and the rest will have something to say about that. This isn't a current ranking, it's those WRs I believe have a real good chance of being better "going forward". (there are others as well). Chambers just is not consistent, and I see little reason to think he will be.

Whoever Theisman talks about is a to player, it is such a joke. Every game he does he talks about how great so and so is. This is coming from Dolphin fan...Chambers is NOT a top 5 WR.
