Champ Bailey (1 Viewer)

Height: 6-0 Weight: 192 Age: 29

Experience: 9th season

What's his weakness? Speed? Height? Route running? Is it just his legend that makes QB's look the other way?

I have a good amount of WRs that play Denver this year and I want to figure out which ones to play and which ones not to.

Bailey always plays the left side of the field. The Broncos do not line him up against specific receivers.

I'm a Champ fan, loved him here in DC, but the dude doesn't walk on water. He *does* give up plays. Just not as many as other corners. I'd never sit my WR1 or WR2 because of him.

Not much to worry about this week. With his height advantage Jackson might be able to beat him on a jump ball in the EZ...

Indy is the only team that have done much through the air on DEN and those included a 9 yard pass to TE Dallas Clark, a 3 yard endzone corner route TD by Clark and a 3 yard pass to Reggie Wayne.

So quick short passes in the red zone and passes to big TE's that can either sheild with their big body or out jump the DB.

This shouldn't be a problem for SD w/ Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson but I can see why BUF Evans had a problem. Denver isn't giving much up on long routes to speedy but short WR's.

Not me. I sit my #1 WR against Bailey all day long. I don't care who the guy is. I might play Randy Moss against him this year. But that would be about it. I don't start Steve Smith against him, particularly with Carr throwing to him. TO, maybe considering how Romo feeds him the ball, but I think he is more accepting to be a decoy this year than in years past (at least he seemed to be after the win last week and him only getting 30 yards). I might start Chad or Housh against him hoping that the one I started were to do well while Bailey covers the other one. I just don't start WR's against Bailey. I'm also starting to feel the same way about Nate Clements....That dude is a beast....

Height doesn't necessarily mean he can jump higher. Charles Barkley made a career in the NBA because he had sick vert not because he was a tall by NBA norms....And Rodman was an amazing rebounder not because of his size, he was pretty tall, but not a big guy. He was so good based on technique and body placement. While the offensive player has the advantage in that he knows where he's going, the defensive player doesn't have to catch the ball. He just has to get a finger on the ball and send it off course by a few degrees....

Denver's actually been better against #2 WRs than #1 WRs so far this season, and their success has as much to do with Bly as it does with Bailey. Bly was primarily responsible for coverage on Evans, remember.

Denver's defense is so tough against WRs because Champ Bailey and Dre Bly are both guys capable of going 1-on-1 with the best WRs in the league (Bly actually spent more time in man coverage against #1 WRs in Detroit than any other CB in the league). In addition, their DEs are much better this year, and the middle of the defense is a sieve. The result is that the least desirable matchup on the entire field is the CBs, and when teams DO test them, they have to do it quickly (thanks to Rice, Moss, and Dumervil), and Champ and Bly are both more than capable of taking care of themselves.

If you're going to sit WRs against Denver, that's fine, but be sure to credit Bly as much as Bailey.

Jackson does has a 5" height advantage on Bailey, which probably translates to a 8-10" advantage in reach, but I did say 'might' and probably should have bolded/capped it. Besides the obvious deficiency at WR for SD, Bailey and Bly will shut down passing for SD except for maybe Gates up the middle against the Broncos LBs.

Week 1 - Lee Evans 2 catches, 5 yards

Week 2 - Ronald Curry 2 catches, 12 yards

Week 3 - Dennis Northcutt 2 catches, 37 yards

Week 4 - Marvin Harrison 1 catch, 8 yards (injured)

Weeks 1-3 Bailey also had the benefit of facing crappy QBs, so it would have been interesting to see what Peyton and Marvin could accomplish against him if Marvin hadn't been knocked out. Vince Jackson should put up similar numbers.

To answer your question, I don't think you ever play matchups with your best players; if you have TO, Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, etc., they should be playing regardless of who's lining up on the other side. The bigger problem with WRs facing the Broncos is that Denver has been getting roughshod run over them and they've given up lots of catches and TDs to TEs. 1st against the pass, 31st against the run. Why bother throwing at that awesome corner tandem when you can run the ball all day and pick apart the middle of the field with a TE?

ask Jerry Porter...enough said. This year, not so much in week 2. That was only due to McClown's ineptitude. Otherwise there was two very easy TD passes to Porter this year that Champ would have looked like a chump....ala two years ago when Porter burned Champ all night.

There is no shut down CB, period. There are great ones, as Champ is. This does not equate to sitting a top WR against him. Especially a tall one with skills. The rules don't allow for a shut down CD anymore. Champ 10 years ago could and would shut down almost any WR. Now is a different story.

I'm just saying, I would not be afraid to start a WR1 or WR2, ONLY because they are playing Denver. If there are other viable options at WR on your roster that you'd normally consider, and other factors are favorable to those options at WR, then sure, I'd agree.

Dear FBG, What happens if your team doesn't have a #1 WR?Sincerely, The San Diego Chargers
No clue. In the past, Denver's lined Bailey up against Gates sometimes, and they've used a "big nickle" defense (3 safeties, 2 CBs) sometimes. We won't know how Bates is going to go until we see it, but if it were me, I'd put Bailey on Gates again. We know Bailey can handle Gates (some of the worst games of Gates' career have come against even an injured Champ Bailey), and Denver's weak enough at safety already without putting a third one on the field to try and cover the biggest receiving threat at TE in the entire league.

I know when Denver has played KC in the past Bailey almost always lines up against Gonzo. Seems like matching him up against Gates would be a good move.
