changing divisions in dynasty league (1 Viewer)

I have been a commissioner of a 10 team dynasty league for the past 8 years. We have 2 divisions and the teams have been the same per division for 5 years. An owner sent me an email wanting to discuss the divisions, he thinks the divisions are unfair. Here are my questions.

1. Have any of you dynasty owners/commissioners played in league(s) that have changed divisions from year to year?

2. If so how often do you change them?

3. How do you decide what teams go in which division?

4. Why should you not change them?

I do not feel divisions should change from year to year in a dynasty leagues, maybe in redraft.

Just want other dynasty owners/commissioners opinion on changing division.

I do not change them in leagues I comish. I think it is part of the appeal - long term rivalries between owners in the same division.

Here is my thing. If I put this up for league vote who is to say that another owner will not ask to change them again next year. And another the year after that.

Our league splits things up according to past year's finish:

Division A: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th

Division B: 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th

Gives us a mix of good/bad playoff/non-playoff teams in each division at the start of every season.

My league is 16 team IDP and Offense league. Roster size of 30, keep 20 every year. We have had issues in past were some teams just got so bad due to bad drafts, injuries etc... In order to keep things somewhat competitive each year, draft order is decided based on Potential points scored (mfl keeps track of this). In addition, we re-allign divisions based on the potential points In other words

Division A 1, 2, 3, 4

Division B 5, 6, 7, 8

Division C 9, 10, 11, 12

Division D 13, 14, 15, 16

Division winners are awarded cash and make it to playoffs with 2 wild card teams. With this re-allignment it keeps everyone competitive each year, even if the team is decimated. Keeps the league fresh and exciting. No lack of competition ever. Lots of trash talking, etc... Maybe it s just the guys, but I do not have many people who quit the league.

I think it just depends on the make up of the league. If all the owners know each other it can go either way. Same if its a straight online league and no one knows anyone personally. If on the other hand you have natural divisions for example, some owners are friends or work together, then I think its better to keep those rivalires together.

In our keep 10 league, we switched over a couple of years ago. One division was watered down and we were running into problems with owners not wanting to trade with other teams just because they didn't want to help out division rivals. So, now we just draw cards every year at the draft for divisions. It took care of the trading problem because you never know who's going to be in your division and gives other teams a shot at winning a division.

Over in Zealots (48 Dynasty/IDP leagues) we re-set divisions every 3 years, based upon cumulative 3-year FP scoring totals.

While rivalries in dynasty help make it so much fun and challenging, we decided to shake things up at our 10-year anniversary. All teams went into a hat, and new divisions were formed. Some teams stayed, some teams left. Some rivalries therefore stayed in tact.

So, it can be a very good thing. But don't do it every year. We set parameters.. we won't reshuffle divisions again until Year 20.

Is he a weak team in a strong division?? We had this problem a couple years ago in a dynasty, league decided to just pick teams out of a hat to decide division at the start of the draft.

when we re-aligned our divisions about 2 years ago, we did it schoolyard style. at the time, there had been a several year period where 2 teams were pretty much dominant talent-wise but were stuck in the same division. My team, and another. We then took turns selecting the next worse-off team until we got to the teams closest in roster-talent to each of ours. While it may sound crazy, each team wound up being very well balanced.

Not crazy at all. My league holds a draft for divisions every year, with four different owners doing the picking each season.
