changing from CBS to MFL (1 Viewer)

I am thinking about changing my 2 dynasty leagues from CBS to MFL b/c of the price- CBS is $130 and MFL is $70.

what are the positives and negatives of CBS vs MFL?

tell me why I should make this change besides the price.

what does MFL offer that CBS does not?

Haven't used CBS in years. MFL generally is rolling out good features every year. For example, you can get average points allowed by position versus every team.

I specifically moved from MFL to CBS. Don't know if things have changed since 3 years ago, but MFL was very unpolished and difficult to navigate. It was overly complex (which I guess some people prefer), CBS is well packaged and polished. Worth the cost to me, it's only $5 extra per owner in a 12 team league. I don't know of anything specific that CBS can't do that MFL does do but I'm sure someone in the SP has more info.

I am not a big fan of MFL at all. CBS and even ESPN are much better IMO. RTSports was good too, but that league switched over to ESPN so I haven't used it in a couple of years.

i like mfl, but i think CBS sports is more of a eye candy... so i would go with CBS, simply because it looks betterrrrrrrr

some of these customized MFL leagues are very cool
It depends on how pretty you want it. I'm more substance over style, so I like the fact that I can dig and get all sorts of data - and from prior years. Different strokes.

I've commished with both.

MFL is pretty crappy, but the cost is good if you're concerned about dinero.

I use CBS for my 14-man and 10 bucks a person doesn't seem like so much the more you split it. Especially when buy in is $150-$300

If they were both free I'd take CBS in a heartbeat.

For me, MFL is everything I want in a fantasy league site and more. The stats they keep are very detailed and I've found it pretty easy to access what I needed.

That being said, I like CBS, too. They're really the only two services I would consider. Neither one is a loser imo. :lmao:

i agree both sites are about this same just set up different. they both have their pros and cons. here is what I like about MFL so far-just set up my league last nighta real message board. CBS MB sucksbeing able to add future draft picks to your trade offers(many years in advance if league rule allow), CBS does not do this, we are a dynasty league. detailed reportsbeing able to customized your pageI do find CBS's commissioner set up features to be more user friendly

A cheaper fee for site is easier on the bank book or better to the pot..... MFL is favored for many reasons and CBS as well and quite simply the people in the league should be the tie breaker of the pros and cons if it comes down to it, let the league favorite win the vote?

food for thought! :goodposting:

I have a bunch of owners that are less than computer savvy. I've brought up switching to MFL but everyone wanted to stay with CBS.

For me the extra $5/team is worth it if everyone is happy and I don't have to hear these guys whining because they don't know how to navigate the website.

MFL is the better product once you learn how to use it. If your Commish is willing to spend the time to learn the site you'll be much happier with MFL. Loads more options, though setting up those additional options is usually where people get tripped up. Hence, needing a dedicated Commish. And MFL has a VERY hands on and helpful support staff. Whenever I had any questions they were right on top of it.

+ CBS had !!MASSIVE!! problems with their site not to long ago. at the start of the last 2 seasons, they were offering current clients tremendous discounts to stay and overlook all the trouble. I've never had that issue with MFL. In '07', the problems with a CBS site, ruined one of the leagues I was in. Huge debate over wether we should stay or not after all the problems tore the league in half.

And then there's the simple $ value.....

MFL>CBS hands down..

Switched to MFL from CBS 3 seasons ago and couldnt be happier.

IMO:

- MFL templates make a much nicer looking site the CBS with out question

- If you are in a keeper or dynasty league MFL is the only way to go

- Far fewer problems with down time with MFL

- You can make your site look as great as you want with a very good community to help you out

- Not near as many ads

I also believe that MFL will be paying much bigger attention to league history in this up coming season. Each year they seem to add a bit more to it.

CBS does allow trading draft picks, just not beyond the current season which I hope they change. Hasn't been an issue in the dynasty league I commish as not alot of trades go down involving picks anyway.

Trading future draft picks is important in my dynasty leagues. I have emailed CBS over the years asking them to add this feature to their site but they have not. If a trade was made during the season and it included a future draft pick, I had to keep up with this manually.

a real message board. CBS MB sucks

being able to add future draft picks to your trade offers(many years in advance if league rule allow), CBS does not do this, we are a dynasty league.

detailed reports

being able to customized your page

I do find CBS's commissioner set up features to be more user friendly
That's my biggest issue with CBS

I prefer CBS and don't think the price difference really means anything compared to having the best site possible. When you break up the price difference between all of the teams it's only a few dollars per team, depending on the size of your league.

One huge thing for me that makes MFL light years better then CBS is the customer service. If you have a problem, Kevin will email you himself within a few hours. With CBS, I always had to wait a week and it was usually a form letter until I emailed them 900 times.

Like others have said, there were huge problems with both CBS and ESPN a few years ago. Both seem to have been fixed but we left CBS for MFL after the problems. I have not been happier as a commish.

We had a vote our initial year and it was 6-6 to go back to CBS or stay. Since I commish, we stayed and now most guys love what MFL gives. A lot of times, guys wont even look to see what MFL is capable of. We did have one guy leave because MFL did not at the time have the front page news article that helps guppys compete. They have added some news info now though

I haven't had much interaction with CBS or ESPN customer service, but I can imagine one person's complaints or concerns sometimes get drowned out due to the size of the company and the volume of requests they have to address. However, your experience with MFL's customer service has been different than mine. I have found Kevin in particular to be obnoxious and my questions have sometimes gone unanswered, which are some of the primary reasons I moved one of my leagues from MFL to ESPN.

i see other MFL leagues customized their site beyond the skins MFL gives. how do you do this?
There are some canned templates that you can choose. You can also customize the home page by going into a commish utility that lets you select the modules that you want, space them out in columns however you want, etc.You can also, in that same area, enter custom "messages" and put them into the home page via the same utility. The cool thing is that these custom messages can include html code themselves. So for examples, my leagues have a wall of champions which has plaques for each league champion which are made by having someone write the html code to create it, and then stick it in the message and add it to the home page. Basically, most anything you can get someone to do for you in web page design, you can work into your league website. HTML isn't too hard to tinker with, let alone if you have a league member or friend who does it for a living who will help out. There are also sites you can pay people to customize your MFL page however you want. Also some people are cool about sharing their code. That's where we originally got our wall of champions thing from. I'll add to those who praise MFL's customer service. I've been using them since around 2002 and I've had only good things to say about their responsiveness and helpfulness both.

MFL is much more customizable than CBS. When it comes down to it, whether or not you prefer MFL is basically going to come down to how much time your commish puts into the website. MFL gives you the tools to fairly easily build a website that CBS leagues can only dream of.

So for examples, my leagues have a wall of champions which has plaques for each league champion which are made by having someone write the html code to create it, and then stick it in the message and add it to the home page.

Check out the link that foo gave you. There's all you need to know plus some on how to customize MFL on that board. I learn something every day on that board.

If you want a plaque like the one on the bottom of this PAGE, let me know. There are many that have a wooden plaque look or you can go with a custom border and background pic like the one in the above league.

I've got a couple of posts in another thread on how to do it, but I'll repost it as I put in better comments. And also the old one has links to images that aren't there anymore while the new one I have the images on photobucket now. It's safe to link to them, but I'd suggest you manually cut and paste the .jpg and .png links into your browser and save them to your own hard drive so if my copies of the images ever disappear, you have your own you can upload somewhere and access.Board can be seen at bottom of page here: http://football10.myfantasyleague.com/2008/home/19867

You want to go into For Commissioners -> Setup and then at the bottom of the screen, choose to edit one of the Home Page Messages. Cut and paste in the following. Edit the various champion names to put in your own. The comments will delineate the first plaque for you so you know what starts and ends each individual one. I also commented where each new row of plaques starts and ends with <tr> and </tr> so you can see how to remove or add more. If you do add/remove rows though you have to find the rows (with comment above) that have "rowspan" in them and change the number to be equal to 1 plus the number of rows of plaques you have.

Once you have it saved in a league message, then go to For Commissioners -> Setup, and under the section for "Appearance Setup", select "Home Page Modules and Tabs Setup". Scroll down the left side to find the "Home Page Message #" that you saved it in, and click "Add to List" to move it over into the items being displayed. Save it, and go back to your home page to check the results.

I used both and prefer CBS, but around these parts, everyone loves MFL because of the price.
My preference is RTsports. Price is in line, especially with the early sign on and they have been great; even upgrades every year. the only thing they don;t have (but I bet they will soon) is an online auction. You can trade future draft picks and they keep track of everythingI believe the cost is less than MFL with the discount but very close

So for examples, my leagues have a wall of champions which has plaques for each league champion which are made by having someone write the html code to create it, and then stick it in the message and add it to the home page.

....what do i cut and paste
Everything inside the code box should be cut and pasted into the home page message on the website.
did that but your plaque was not there
Cut and paste what's in the box into a home page message. Then add that message to the home page with the instructions I gave.
getting the hang of it now, thanks for the help
You're welcome. Glad you got it working. ;)

got the below email from MFL, i am sure you other MFL users got it as well. i used CBS for 10 years and I am kicking myself in the ### for not switching to MFL years ago

April Newsletter - League Champions and More New Features.

Here at MyFantasyLeague.com, we're already busy working on the site for 2009 to ensure that your league experience here is better than ever before. Some of the many enhancements that we've already completed for 2009 include:

League Champions Plaque And Reports - we're happy to report several league records related enhancements, including:

A new Reports > Records > League Champions report, which details your league champions for all seasons you've had on MyFantasyLeague.com

If the above report is not complete for your league, you can use the new For Commissioners > Setup > History Setup > League History Setup page to declare up to the top four finishers of all past seasons you've had on MyFantasyLeague.com.

There are two new related home page modules available on your Home Page Modules and Tabs Setup page: "Championship Plaque" (which shows just the league champion on a plaque) and "League Champions" (which lists up to the top four finishers each season).

Can't Cut List - there is a new For Commissioners > Setup > Players and Rosters > Edit Can't Cut List page that allows a commissioner to specify what players in your league cannot be cut by an owner during the course of doing waivers.

More Divisions and Franchises - the General League Setup page has been updated so the maximum number of divisions a league can have is now 24, and the maximum number of franchises is now 96.

Set 'em and Leave 'em Roster Format - the General League Setup page has a new option on it for the "At the start of the season, rosters are determined by:" option called "Set 'em and Leave 'em - all rostered player are starters, and the same lineup is used throughout the season", which will simplify a more common NFL playoffs league setup.

Prevent Some Owners From Participating In Pools - the Abilities Setup page has been updated with three new columns: "Participate in survivor pool", "Participate in NFL pool" and "Participate in fantasy pool" to allow a commissioner to prevent one or more franchises from participating in the various pools we offer on the site.

Facebook and Twitter - To better serve our customers, we're doing more on these two red-hot social networking sites, including:

The This Page menu available on all league pages now has two additional menu items on it: "Share This Page On Facebook" and "Share This Page On Twitter" to allow you to more easily share links with your friends directly to a given league page.

You can follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/MyFantasyLeague.

You can become our "fan" on Facebook at this page.

Finally, if you have any suggestions for how we could better integrate your league pages with Facebook or Twitter, please let us know!

5-Digit Player IDs - if you're a developer who takes advantage of our Developer's Program, please note that we will start using 5-digit player IDs within the next year. See this blog entry for more details.

With five months until the start of the 2009 season, we've got lots more planned for future site enhancements.

Don't forget to take full advantage of our Customer Referral Program, which allows you to earn big discounts on your 2010 league purchase with us!

Finally, don't forget that the NFL schedule displayed on your 2009 MyFantasyLeague.com league is a dummy/made up schedule. When the official NFL schedule gets released (which should be mid-April), your 2009 league will be updated to reflect this change.

As always, please let us know if you have any comments, questions or suggestions for the site!

Sincerely,

MyFantasyLeague.com
