Charactor issues (1 Viewer)

I get tired of the contact crap and off field bs you have to put up with the so-called charactor issue guys yera in and year out. For the most part, I try and stay away from them. Although, in a new Dynasty League draft, a couple months ago, (this league has no trading) I came away with only 2 players I felt were so-called charactor issue guys, K2 and Sean Taylor. Couldn't have picked a better pair, huh? Should have drafted Jeff George to make it a complete set. Sometimes the temptation is too much :loco:

Anyway just curious of others thoughts on this.

There really is no easy way to predict which players will see significant character issues impact their NFL production. I'll consider character, especially traits like coachability or bumping from college to college, in my evaluation, but am careful not to move talented chuckleheads too far down the draft board. Anymore, it seems like every player has some character concern.Dynasty leagues are full of risk-reward situations. What are you going to do with talented guys like Cedric Benson, Chris Henry, Channing Crowder, Odell Thurman, or Adrian McPherson come draft day?

BTW, a dynasty startup with no trading...guh.

I drafted Crowder and Henry after the slide down.hopefully it will be worth the risk.not aware that Benson was that much of a risk ?

It definitely is something to consider. I'll take a lesser talent who is "safer" personality-wise over the uber-stud headcase. You'll get burned here and there but overall I think you'll come out ahead and with less headaches.Benson is considered a risk because everyone was making comparisons between him and Ricky Williams. Unjustly so IMO.

Benson got arrested for possession of marijuana while at Texas. But I drafted him anyway in same league as Rozelle' s wonderful pair :D

Benson had been accused of marijuana possession and criminal trespassing, each separate incidents, although to my knowledge he has never been convicted of anything. Some might consider his sensitivity to those Ricky Williams comparisons to be a sign of significant immaturity.

Certainly of the five names I tossed out for grins, he may have the least baggage, but his draft position makes a potential character issue still more painful.

I've got to disagree with Pick though about passing up a player you feel to be an "uber-stud" for a lesser talent in a dynasty situation. Those boom-bust guys are often what makes a dynasty a dynasty. Redraft leagues are another issue entirely. With my dynasty colored glasses, a character issue has to be really significant to draft a player of lesser talent.

It depends on how big the gap is. I'm not gonna take Tatupa over Thurman.

While I wll down grade a guy for character issues, I don't have anyone i won't draft because of them. My biggest burns in this area have been O.Smith who I got probably around 10-12 last year in a dynasty league. He was like the fourth RB on my team, so I thought I could hold him through four weeks and then have at least as a RRBc committee for the future. He has all over the place last year and this year is well documented. Robinson i took a flyer on in an inital dynasty draft in the double digit rounds, but he was like my 5th or 6th WR so it was gamble that i just lost on.

Agreed. I figured I misunderstood your definition of "uber-stud"... ;)

I took Ruud over Thurman because of charactor.

I also took Ruud over Thurman and character issues definitely played a factor.

Already drafted, this league drafts in early May. I don't avoid them altogether.

I'm fine with no trading. If I'm gonna lose I'd rather it be because I'm out drafted or not as savvy on the wire, than by someone who can sell ice to an eskimo. We may incorporate somekind off season trading in the future.

While I make post draft trade here or there, I am always leary of the guys who spend a couple of weeks drafting a team then dismantle it through trades before the first week of the season or even before training camp starts. I would not be against a no trade before the season or a certain time after the draft myself.
