*** Chargers at Niners *** (1 Viewer)

We're stuck with it on TV here. So far, Niners starters looking bad against San Diego backups. Vernon Davis has dropped an easy pass and badly missed a block leading to a fumble by Hicks.

The Chargers trotted out the scrubbiest of scrubs... Pinnock, Perkins, Floyd, Marques Harris. Yikes!

Alex Smith has no pocket presence at all.

The SF defense has no clue at all. (They stopped San Diego once, when Charlie Whitehurst slipped down when he went to plant, and all the defensive guys were high-fiving each other).

No news here.

Charlie Whitehurst does.
How is he looking? Clemson fan here and watched just bout every game he played for the tigers. Excited o see him experiencing some success at the next level.
He's looked decent for a rookie. The TD pass was just a jump-ball that worked. He had a good pass in the deep middle that went for 25 or so. He just got picked when he put the ball too far too the inside; he had another jump ball situation if he threw it outside, but inside there was double coverage. (The Niners, of course, didn't do anything to get the INT; Floyd actually tipped the ball up in the air himself reaching around the defender, and the safety was actually lying on his butt when the ball came into his arms).

ugh... INT... was it ugly?
It was a miracle catch by a DB on his back. Not a terrible throw. A better receiver could have made a play on it. He put it deep down field into coverage but in a spot that gave his receiver a chance. The ball was batted twice, fell in the DBs lap. Kinda funny. I like Whitehurst.

Thanks! He isnt a sure thing but he definately has the potential to be successful. He never seemed to get rattled by anything and when he is on he is fun to watch. Hope it works out for him.

Michael Robinson doesn't look polished, but he does bring more energy on offense than the rest of the Niners. He's made some nice runs and catches, dropped one swing pass. Almost all his runs are straight up the gut, and he's done OK with them. (Of course, it's backup defense in by now).

Dilfer looks a lot more like a QB than anyone else in the game. Which is pretty sad, considering that it's Dilfer.

Of course, Robinson is running behind a backup line.Dilfer should start in SF.

Robinson looked polished on the td run. Nice short yardage work. They had him stuffed and he dove right under them, avoided a big hit and got 6. He's played plenty of RB in his past.

Excellent run, straight up the middle by Robinson, fighting through the line and dragging guys into the end zone.

Prediction: All the people who were pimping Gore over Barlow last year will switch to pimping Robinson over Gore by week 6 this year.

It's tough being the starting RB on the worst team in the league.

If Gore is truly healthy, he should make fans happy. The OL is much better than most think. SF will run the ball much better than most think. Allen and Jennings may not be the best pass blockers out there, but that is some serious serious road grading.

Lazy, weak throw by Whitehurst leading to an INT.
Wasn't it tipped by his own player?Lawson had a TD. That was a bad reversal.Robinson is a stud.
The pass was tipped by his own player, but that's only because it was badly off-target. The RB had curled out just behind the defensive line and was only about 5 yards from Whitehurst when he threw it, almost completely missing him.

That won't help much when they're down 21-0 in the second quarter.

Are you a 9er fan, CalBear? If I'm right about the OL, they'll be in in games more often than expected. They need to start Dilfer though. Btw, pretty excited to see Cal @ Ten tomorrow. Game of the week after the Florida thing.

I am not a fan of any NFL team. I root for Cal and for Cal players in the NFL.I don't think you're right about the OL, but it might not be as horribly pathetic as the defense and the QB play.

Interesting; Hicks back in at RB. I wonder if the fumble, combined with Robinson's performance, has put Hicks back into the RB3 slot.

Now Robinson back in; I guess Nolan is still trying to decide something.

Two extremely bad INTs, one each way.

Robinson doesn't have natural vision & he has a bad habit of putting his head down when he shouldn't, but I definitely think he could make a nice utility player in time.

Trent Dilfer just called him the most impressive rookie he's ever seen
brown-nosin' for the media.
He went out of his way to point him out, it's not like he was led into that answer. I'm keeping a closer eye on him after tonight personally.

sounds like a bitter gm who can't get his hands on Robbinson :boxing: quit being a penny pincher, sack up and pay the price for the future starter........GO Penn State!

You are comical.

Vernon Davis is my starter, I waited one round to long in my draft. Someone talk me off the ledge, tell me he'll be okay this year. Please!

jumpnice to see Robinson doing well. i definitely had my doubt about his ability to be an NFL RB, but who knows....

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the #2 TE in SF for most of the year... He will still play a lot so he'll get a few points a week, but I wouldn't expect much more than that. Best case scenario he gets in a groove later in the year... but don't be shocked if he's not impressive during the early going.

Looking at the decision patterns of current 49er management, what is likely to happen is Eric Johnson will outperform Davis this year, and be traded or cut next year with the logic "you don't draft a TE with the #6 pick to sit on the bench." Then Davis and Smith can suck together for all of 2007, at which point Nolan will be fired.

As with Detroit, the problem is that you can't fire owners.

Brilliant post. Fire Nolan, he's as dumb as a rock!

The prediction was he'd get fired at the end of 2007.Actually, at this point I'd expect he'll last until 2008 due to the fluky wins they got in 2006.
