Chargers' Cameron to Interview

January 03, 2007

[sOS] Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron will interview for the Dolphins for their head coaching position, league sources said Wednesday.

Cameron will also interview with the Arizona Cardinals for their vacancy. Miami requested permission to speak to the Chargers assistant coach just hours after Nick Saban defected to the University of Alabama. The Cardinals contacted the Chargers on Tuesday.

Cameron, 45, is in his fifth season as Chargers offensive coordinator. He was head coach at Indiana University from 1997-01. He interviewed for the head coaching jobs at Houston and St. Louis last season.

Teams can interview assistants from playoff teams through Sunday. After that, they must wait until those teams are finished with their season.

Cam's interviewing with Arizona on Friday. Hate to see him go - he's been a very good coordinator in SD, although much of his recent success has to be attributed to have superior offensive talent.

I wonder if the Chargers might interview him. If it comes down to keeping either Marty or Cam but not both, might AJ choose Cam?

Good point. Makes you wonder if AJ won't pull Cam aside and whisper some interesting options in his ear if he'll decline offers from AZ and MIA.

Fire Marty to keep Cam Cameron? Marty completely turned that team around. He has the second highest winning percentage that team has ever had. If he had won 2 games he would have a higher winning percentage than Sid Gillman. What would it say about that organization if they fired a coach after a 14-2 season? Where’s the loyalty?

When the rumors were floating around last year about A.J. firing Marty, I thought I heard something about Phillips' contract containing something about him taking over the HC position. Does anyone else remember this?

That strategy worked well with Bill Belichick. He took a $1 million from the Jets not to leave, only to bolt to NE. Hopefully Cam wouldn't pull a Belichick, I mean a Herm, err, a Saban.

Marty is solid as usual, but it's been AJ Smith who has turned the team around. Let's not forget that the team was 12-20 under Marty until Smith took over as GM. Until I see otherwise, Marty is a good coach who is a liability in the playoffs.

This is the same Cam Cameron who was QB coach for the Redskins under Norv, right? I think he developed Gus Ferotte and Congressman Heath Shuler (D-NC) and lead the Skins to the playoffs and on to the Super Bowl, right?

Cam deserves his shot, and I hope he gets one of these job openings. I mean heck, the Chargers lead the league in scoring by a wide margin. He has consistently had the Chargers as a top scoring team for the past few years now. Sure its great to have LT, but guys like Weiss had Brady and it didn't stop him from getting the Irish job.

Miami has what's his name as the O Line coach who worked miracles with a no name Chargers O Line. Saban brought him over. I wonder if he could be retained if Cameron were to come aboard. Could be a reason for him to go to Miami.

No Super Bowls, but he developed Gus Frerotte into a Pro Bowler.

And Belichick was a failure in Cleveland, too. If you learn from past mistakes and keep improving, he could be decent. He's obviously going to get a shot somewhere in the near future, it would seem. Rest is up to him.
