Chargers | Woods released

Tue, 1 Aug 2006 14:13:21 -0700

The San Diego Chargers have announced the team has waived WR Rashaun Woods.

-----------------

49ers gave up on him early on, and Chargers apparently didn't like what they saw either. They cut him to pick up WR Gerran Walker (who?).

How fast this guy has fallen since his two-time All-America days at Oklahoma State.

Since the time he signed his rookie deal, it seemed as if he lost (or never had) his passion for the game. IIRC he talked openly of going on the professional fishing tour (ala Denny Green). I suspect he has talent, but lacks the desire to live up to his potential. Of course making several million dollars may have spoiled him.

JUST IN: Chargers waive Woods; claim Walker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The San Diego Chargers have waived wide receiver Rashaun Woods and claimed wide receiver Gerran Walker off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.

Walker is a 5-9, 188-pound receiver out of Lehigh University. He had originally joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent following April’s NFL Draft. Woods was acquired by the Chargers in an April trade with the San Francisco 49ers for cornerback Sammy Davis.

As a senior in 2005, Walker earned first-team All-Patriot League honors after leading Lehigh with 38 catches for 608 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading kickoff return man with 29 returns for 702 yards (24.2-yard average). As a junior in 2004, Walker was a second-team all-league choice.

he was a good enough athlete to make plays in college with little separation, but that doesn't cut it in the pros...

By being dumb as dirt, in one way or another. It's not exclusively WR territory (Druckenmiller and Clarett also come to mind), but they definitely rule it.

This is really kind of an odd cut when the Chargers have guys like Robert Ortiz and Mark Simmons on the roster at WR. They've got absolutely no chance at all to make the team. If the Chargers want to pick up Gerran Walker, they can cut one of those guys. Why not wait for Woods to get healthy and see what he can do?

I guess the Chargers had already seen enough of Woods. It just seems a little weird. At least now he can concentrate on his bass fishing, I guess.

Rashaun was having hammy problems this training camp. Maybe they thought this injury would linger. Might explain why they gave up on him.

Jul 31 2006 3:52PM Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Rashaun Woods (hamstring) missed his second consecutive practice Sunday, July 30. Jul 30 2006 11:49AM Jay Posner, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Rashaun Woods (hamstring) did not practice Saturday afternoon, July 29. He did participate in the team's morning practice. Jun 11 2006 10:38AM Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Rashaun Woods (unspecified) saw limited or no action in one or both practices Saturday, June 10. Head coach Marty Schottenheimer said the injury is not believed to be serious.

I was going to say the same thing. When I was at TC over the weekend I kept looking for Woods, but he was out injured the whole time. Guess the Bolts figured they would just cut bait.

Yeah, but it's always been the same crap with Woods. Hammy, hammy, hammy. As a Woods owner the last 2 years, I'm seriously questioning his desire at this point. At some point, you have to lay it on the line and play hurt. That's the reason the 49ers traded him, and I'm assuming a large part of why the Chargers followed suit. Absolutely pathetic that a guy with this kind of talent wants to F#&*ing fish!!

No pun intended I'm assuming? :D

Very disappointing bust, here. I thought he had a perfect opportunity with the rebuilding 49'ers back in 2004. :bag: And I thought he had the talent and drive to capitalize on the opportunity. :bag: :bag:

From the news archive on his Footballguys.com player page, a quotation from then-coach Erickson in early June of 2004 Click Here for Full Woods Archive

WR Rashaun Woods, the 49ers' first pick in the April draft, has shown improvement during this camp after being overwhelmed by the volume of the playbook during the May minicamp, Erickson said. "He's a guy that's really jumped out at me probably more than anybody here in the last couple practices," the coach said.
Goodbye Rashaun Woods, we hardly knew you.

So what if the guy wants to fish. I don't get all the hate. He cashed in, doesn't really have his heart in the game, it's time to move on if that's what he chooses. Should we all stay at jobs we hate because the money is better?

That could be the case. If your heart isn't into something you have to be of exceptional talent to even be moderately successful.

Not quite in the same territory we are talking here, but take a look at David Terrell over the years.

Picked 8th overall and is now an afterthought in the Denver WR stable. We was drafted in 2001.

Yeah that's a good idea. Drop the guy you just traded for! They couldn't cut someone else to see what Woods could do over a larger period of time? Dumb.

Anyone have any insight into Parker vs Jackson vs Osgood for the WR2 spot?
It might officially be an open competition; but realistically, Parker has WR2 locked up and Jackson has WR3 locked up. If Jackson looks good early in the season, he may rotate in more with McCardell and Parker in the two-WR sets. But to start out, he will play mostly in three-WR sets (which, based on what I've seen in training camp, they may use quite often).

Is it just the fishing comments or are there other examples that lead people to believe that he has a lack of desire?

It's my impression that bad hammies have been Rashauns downfall, not a lack of desire.

Geez, the guy wants to do something else with his life and that makes him a loser.

If he wants to fish then let him fish.

i'm far from an expert when it comes to college players, but how does someone go in the late 1st round, and not even make a roster?
1998 Marcus Nash Broncos Wide receiver TennesseeIt Happens
IIRC, Marcus Nash actually has two Super Bowl rings - one with Denver in 1998 and one with Baltimore in 2000. Not bad for a guy with 4 career NFL receptions...Actually, I've had Nash on my fantasy arena football team (seriously!) for the past two years, and he is a STUD. He's a record-breaking WR in the AFL, for whatever that's worth.

I thought it was Parker with one starting spot then a fight for the other. Any confirmation on this?
Like MT said there is no open competition. Parker and McCardell will start and get the bulk of the action in the 2 WR sets. Parker usually gets the nod in the single set. Jackson is the 3rd WR. None of this will change barring injury to EP or KMac or Jackson morphing into Herman Moore during the preseason.

I think you're forgetting about McCardell.Maurile confirmed what I had thought, that Parker was still in line for the WR2 position with Jackson applying some pressure but probably destined to be the WR3 at the outset. Was curious as I gor Parker as a throw-in to a deep league trade.

Not trying to hijack but I can't ignore that statement. I'm in shock that there's an AFL fantasy league out there. I've often thought I'm a fantasy addict, but wow, you have issues...

I didn't "get this" from MT

Jackson is talented enough to force an issue between he and either starter. We'll find out if he can but that door's not closed yet. He is a very difficult matchup with his size

Here's to Jackson :banned: If he can stay healthy this year he can bring speed and size to table, something Parker and Mccardell can't. I see no reason why he can't at least be #2b.

Yeah, I didn't mean to hijack in the first place, but I had to stick up for my boy Nash - he carried me to the fantasy AFL championship! They have it on sandbox, I started it two years ago when there was no hockey...needed something to get me through the winter. Maybe I'll move this over to the FFA and see if there are any other fantasy AFL players here... :)
