Chargers Fire Offensive Line Coach Mauck

SAN DIEGO (Jan. 18) - The San Diego Chargers fired offensive line coach Carl Mauck and assistant secondary coach Albert Lewis on Wednesday.

Each had a year left on his contract.

"At times this can be a difficult business and we have to make tough decisions," coach Marty Schottenheimer said in a statement. "These are good football men with valuable experience in this league. I thanked them for their hard work and wished them both well."

Mauck was hired last offseason after Hudson Houck took a big-money offer from Miami. The Chargers returned their entire line from the team that won the AFC West title in 2004, although left tackle Roman Oben got hurt on Oct. 30 and didn't play again.

The line struggled late in the season, when the Chargers lost three of their last four games to miss the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 seasons, finishing 9-7.

Schottenheimer was irritated enough with the line after a loss at Kansas City on Dec. 24 that he spoke in the third person, saying: "We haven't run the ball as efficiently as Marty Schottenheimer would like to run the ball."

In the season finale against Denver on Dec. 31, Broncos safety John Lynch blew through the line to blindside quarterbacks Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. The hit on Brees caused him to fumble, and he hurt his shoulder in the scramble for the ball, requiring surgery.

How are they going to replace the O-line coach?Didn't they have a terrible time finding a guy with a last name that ends in "uck" when Houck left? Good thing Mauck was available.I bet they are trying to save on something by doing this......

Marty Schottenheimer should fire Marty Schottenheimer. Wait, what am I saying? I don't want them to win  I'd like to see if anyone can find this stat: Has there ever been a team with 8 Pro Bowlers (6 on pro bowl team, 2 alternates) and a Defensive Rookie of the Year that hasn't made the playoffs? If not, I think Marty has reached his crowning achievement.

no real surprise that Mauck didn't work out there...the guy looks like Chris Farley and is fun to watch on the sidelines, but he's not a very good offensive line coach. I'm actually surprised that he keeps getting hired.

Have they fired AJ Smith yet?
He, Tomlinson, and Gates are as good as gone.
:D Wasn't LT a Butler pick?

Anyway, Gates was a wonderful pick, however let's not forget AJ killed his opportunity to play in the first game of the season . . . which they lost at home . . . by 4 points . . . before missing the playoffs by one win.

Cincy drafted Chad Johnson before Marvin Lewis signed on. Should Mike Brown still be calling the shots there?

The Chargers missed the playoffs by 3 games (2 games and they would have just lost the tie-breaker to the Steelers).

I believe they played their last game knowing that they couldn't make the playoffs so it's tough to count that loss, especially given that Denver was resting a lot of guys. So they lost by one game and a tie-breaker. The point is that Smith's decision all but cost them a win when they play in one of the most competitive divisions in football.
