A couple other good ones from 2016:

The Nice Guys (buddy detective movie with Gosling and Crowe)

The Wailing (Korean thriller)

If you want to test out your sound system any of the previously listed films from Denis Villeneuve sounds great (Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario)

Captain Cranks

I don't know what my other four are yet, but Parasite would be in my top 5.  Probably my others won't win any Captain Cranks awards anyway.  Very cool of you to do this!
The first winner is in:  Parasite! Wacky movie. I'm not sure how it won the Oscar for best picture, but we enjoyed it nonetheless and it met the 7/10 threshold. @krista4Let me know what charity you would like a donation sent to.  Thanks for the recommendation.

ETA - I'm curious what everyone else thought about it. Oscar worthy?

Let's see.  It's 23 x 16.  Two rows of seating with first row 15 feet from 145" screen. Epson 6050UB projector. I'm currently running a 7.1 system and waiting for the Onkyo RZ70 release to move up to 7.2.4. I figure it'll be fun to get used to the sound as-is before really ramping things up with Atmos.

I don't want to bore anyone with more details but I have learned a lot the last few months and will be happy to answer any questions.

I'm have no suggestions on newer movies.  I haven't seen most of them, so this thread is good for me as well.  But I do have a question ....

What's the difference between a 7.2 and just splitting the LFE on a 7.1 and running two subs?

You can room correct for the two subs distinctly in the 7.2 setup. So rather than forcing it to optimize two subs as though it's one in the same spot in the room, the algorithm can optimize what's actually going on: Two separate subs in two different spots in the room. This also gets rid of the need to level match your subs before running room correction.

Makes sense.

My old Yamaha A/V receiver is dying a slow death.  Two out of four HDMI inputs don't work anymore and speaker level decibel balancing is sketchy at best.  So I've been looking around.  Been thinking about going to a two sub system for awhile anyway.

Yeah...I'm working a 10 year old Denon that downrezzes my video and limits my speaker setup. It sounds great, but I'm looking forward to expanding. The Onkyo RZ50 is heralded as the best mid-priced receiver ($1,400) because of its Dirac Live room correction. Unfortunately it only has 9 channels of amplification, so I'm waiting for the RZ70.

@Captain Cranks -( or any others using this for ideas)again not part of the contest since they are old, but if you like Parasite,  I suggest others of his that are streaming:

Memories of Murder (Hulu)

Mother (Amazon Prime)

I personally think they are better than Parasite, but I also saw them first and can admit a bit is that movie snob "I new of him before now" junk poking it's head out a bit for me.    All great movies though.

Similar to my Yamaha.  I LOVE the sound of it, but it won't do any pass-though more than 1080p.  Which is OK for now, because to goes to an 80" 1080p tv.  Both are getting replaced.

My problem is that I'm kinda stuck with a 5.X setup, due to being in the worst room in the history of man in regard to speaker placement.

Honestly, this decision is about a week old, and I haven't done enough research and asked enough questions to really know.
From what I've read, Atmos is a game changer and even the floorstander mounted speakers that shoot up and bounce sound off the ceiling make a big difference in the experience.

@Captain Cranks - I am going to update my list.   I combed through wikipedia releases and I forgot one that should be on my list.    Instead of those last two I will make my 5th:

The Peanut Butter Falcon
Ugh.  I thought this one was going to go unsuggested so I could do so.

You still haven't mentioned the speakers in this setup, so what you pumping the sound out of??

A caution to you on Onkyo. I've had Denon, Onkyo and Marantz as my pre-pro. If you like the Denon sound, you may not like the Onkyo. I know I didn't and wish I would have gone and auditioned side by side.

Why AV receiver vs pre-pro & amp?

How are you watching your content? Streaming device, blu ray, or dedicated local rips via Plex?

Very cool!  I'm glad you enjoyed it...enough.  This is perfect timing as I happened to read this wikkid post last night:

Come from a strong Catholic volunteering tradition. Done it my whole life til i moved up here - care of my ol' peeps (both Volunteers of the Year in every community they've lived where that's recognized - my da statewide once) keeps me close to home these days. Can't say you're alive unless you're actively helping.

Homeless kids, man. There's nothin' with more upside, for you and those you help, than homeless kids. I still get emails & cards from my kids @ Cuidando Los Ninos in Albq and i'm crying now thinking of all the smiles i gave & got.

And politics, By all means, don't forget politics. I started canvassing when i was thirteen. From the ground up is the only way to throw the thieves out da temple of democracy. Find someone with new ideas, energy & commitment and push and support them. That's still how it's done. Or causes, local environmental stuff perhaps.

At any rate, find something to connect with. I remember backing into a thing of hearing how our guys in Iraq & Afghanistan needed phone cards and talking a few guys at the casino into giving me some for when i brought mine down to VFW. By the end of that year, employees and customers of Sandia Casino had sent 15K in phone cards overseas.

Connect. It's why you're here and often the most rewarding thing you'll do.

Please donate to Cuidando Los Niños.  Thank you!!

I was a big audiophile about 15 years ago, so most of my speakers are carryovers from that time. I'm currently using an Onix Reference 2 setup with a Hsu Research VTF-2 sub. I also have Onix Rocket RS850s and RSC200 center as options although I'm going to wait until I get a new receiver to do a back and forth. Aesthetically, the Reference 2s in piano black match the theater better, so I'm giving them the nod for now.

As for pre/pro and amp, I can't find a pre/pro with the options I want (Dirac, 2X distinct LFE outs. HDMI 2.1) for anywhere close to the price of the Onkyo. The need for Dirac really limits my options in this regard.

As for source equipment, I have a Panasonic UB420 4K BR player and Nvidia Shield Pro that I use for streaming and playing ripped and downloaded content from my Plex server.

I forgot to mention the screen.  It's this Akia thin bezeled 145" 16:9 from Amazon. Highly recommended for the price.

What model Onkyo did you test out? Normally I'd stick with Denon but I've heard that the Dirac Live room EQ with the Onkyo RZ50 is lights out.

Anything obvious I'm missing? I've quickly realized I need to get velvet curtains and LED lights pronto.

Nice setup for sure! The whole Covid thing has really messed up all these electronics mfg and new releases/features :( . Love the Nvidia, that's what I use as well, one of the best in terms of pass throughs.

I can't recall the version I used but it was in the 1500 range back in 16/17, so it was a good one. I just used it as pre for my Rotel just like the old Denon and the current Marantz. I absolutely hated it with my old Paradigms, but loved the Marantz and Denon with them. Now I'm running Goldenear Triton 2s that I absolutely love.

I’ll second Memories of Murder.

I did not realize Mother was on Prime. I haven’t seen it — been wanting to watch it.

This sounds familiar.  My speakers are also the same era.  I like them and plan to re-use in my next setup.

5X - Martin Logan Motion series ---> https://www.martinlogan.com/en/product/motion-60xti  I love the sound of the pleated tweeters

1X SVS PC13 Ultra ---> https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1277902-REG/svs_pc13_ultra_13_5_cylinder_ported_powered.html

SVS should give me a commission check on the number of these my friends and family have bought after hearing mine. 😃

Those Tritons are fancy looking. I probably don't have to tell you that speakers make most of the difference in sound quality. That's another reason I'm not willing to step up to the more expensive pre/pros. I used to buy and test higher end separates by Parasound and Anthem and came to the conclusion that the performance for the price difference wasn't enough. Speakers, OTOH...

Looking at a receiver upgrade myself on then next year or so.  Currently still have a 1080p tv, and current demon receiver isn’t fully 4K functional (the HDMI isn’t the most recent spec).  Anyway, why isn’t 9 channels sufficient right now?  Is anything being made (blu ray, 4K disc) that actual uses more than 9 channels?

My end goal is 7.2.4, with back surrounds, side surrounds, and four dolby Atmos speakers in the ceiling. They say there's not much difference between a 5.2.4 system and a 7.2.4 system, but I've already got the speakers set up from my 7.1 system, so may as well use 'em.

I also currently have a 7.2 system and at least initially would be reusing them.  What will you be using for your in ceiling speaker?

Not sure you'll think it's a 7/10, and it's probably already been mentioned, and it is extremely dark (i.e. hard to see some stuff) but there are some scenes in the recent The Batman which would be exceptionally thrilling on your system.  Thinking of one car chase in particular.  Also, the score and soundtrack are pretty cool and your system would do them both justice imo.
