Charity Music Draft - Theme 1 (1 Viewer)

Think this has to be the rule now anyway, since that's how it's been played.  If we were doing it the other way, then I demand that weasel turn "Just Got Paid" over to OH since I only waited because I was told that was the rule.

(I'm kidding about that last bit, of course.)
I am 100% for this.

I am also 100% for him then turning around and taking the Mayfield song instead.

Nice, I had somehow never heard this song.  Is it about...a car crash?
Yeah - the funny part was that I was mostly going for “feel” of the song and not necessarily having the lyrics being relevant to the theme - more like songs I would crank when driving home happy. Obviously this is probably not a celebratory song though. Someone has to come in last 😀.

I thought you were being extra clever by going with a song that involved a car AND sounds really upbeat.  Like you said, lean into it!

Technically you jumped in early here and needed to await your timeslot.  (See my question about it above, etc.)  No harm since no one else that had been skipped has come back in yet, but just to avoid confusion.
Sorry for jumping the gun, guys. I thought...well, it doesn't matter what I thought. Looks like things have been clarified. I'll wait til my time slot from here on out. Wednesday's, I won't make until probably Thursday morning.

Point of parliamentary procedure...  I have not participated in a song draft before.

If a song is taken, are all versions off the board or can you still take covers of a song already selected?

I'm pretty new to this myself, but it feels like all versions of the song should be off the board.  The veterans can chime in if that's not the right take.

Usually versions by other artists are allowed, but this is your draft, and you can decide if you want to allow it or not. For this particular draft, I agree with taking all other versions (covers) of a song off the board once it has been selected for the theme in progress.

Thanks.  Yeah, let's nix any other versions once one hits the board.

In the early 90's a young Lehigh98 just received my learner's permit and bought my first car.  It was totaled when someone blew a red light and hit me but I then got to upgrade to a 1989 Dodge Daytona with T-tops and a CD changer!  I loved that car.  There was nothing like the sense of freedom driving by myself in my own car down to the South (very important distinction) Jersey shore.  Around that time this song was in frequent radio rotation and fit the mood perfectly:

2.01 - Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane

Sure it may have gotten a bit played out in the 90's but I'll still listen to the whole song instead of skipping or changing the station if it comes on.  It also had a bit of a resurgence in 2005 with the Rascal Flatts version for one of the Pixar Cars movies.

Still love that car...

Which beach in S. Jersey?  I worked a summer in LBI after I graduated from college in '98.

2.02

Carl Perkins Cadillac - Drive-by Truckers

once again I'm going for feel - not lyrical compatibility with the theme - at least this one isn't about a fatal car accident (but all the main characters are dead, except for ol' Jerry Lee).

Bounced around over the years.  When I was growing up we lived near Philly only about 90 mins away.  When we were young my parents would take us to Wildwood for the rides.  We'd also mix it up sometimes over the years and go to Ocean City or Seaside Heights, Cape May, Sea Isle, etc.  When we were old enough to drive but not yet old enough to drink, Ocean City was our go to.  We also had HS senior week there and BYOB (it's a dry town but we were underage so they cancel each other out right?)  Later on we'd hit Avalon and of course Sea Isle again and the OD for no shower happy hour.  Good times...

So, I've got my pocket full of money and am ready to rip it up. Time to put the windows down and slam this into my 8 track player.

2.04 The Allman Brothers Band - "Ramblin' Man"

Sweet car.  Did you have it in red like the picture?

I waited until my time slot because thems the rules.  I also listened to a bunch of versions of this song, but I still love the President's version best so:

Round 2.6  -  Kick Out the Jams  -  Presidents of the United States of America

Is anyone else trying to tabulate the judging as we go or are you just going to wait and assess when all the picks are in?

I'm waiting; to a certain extent I am going to take in the songs as a whole when I judge rather than view them individually.  It seems like some people are telling a story with their picks, which might get bonus points from me.

As a drafter, I don't think I should judge. That's just me, though, and I won't think any less of other drafters who also vote.

And I do have a story with my picks - lame as it may be - but won't pull it all together and post until my final choice is made.

I don't see any harm in judging as long as I feel I can be objective.  We can't vote for ourselves, so I'm just going to let the music and stories do the deciding.

It was a darker red / maroon that might have been called "black cherry" or at least I did.  Something more like this.

It also came with little Decepticon logos on the fog lights which I didn't notice right away but was awesome.   :nerd:

I started working around 12 so was fortunate to be saving money with not much to spend it on.  (Except for stupid worthless mass produced late 80's baseball cards)

Seems like your fellow drafters would be the best judges, because they're here to read the write-ups and are more likely to listen to the songs.  But I can't blame anyone for being lazy.

I'm doing a combination of those.  I'm listening to every selection now.  I'll be ranking at the end based on the overall effect.  Do I want to be riding in this car when this music happens?
