I reffed a Newport Beach Summer League back in the '80's. Scott Brooks was in the league. He had just signed with the T Wolves. I asked him what it was like to play with Barkley.
He said he had no place to live when he joined the Sixers. Chuck let him stay at his place the rest of the season. He said if they went out drinking, he'd randomly pay the entire tab for the bar they were at. Scott said he would do anything for anybody at anytime.
I have read some books by an evangelical author that played college ball with Barkley. Apparently from what I heard from someone else, Barkley has funded (very generous) much of this mans ministry without completely embracing the message of the author. I heard that this is not uncommon for Barkley, taking care of people.
I personally like Barkley’s straightforward, no nonsense, practical attitude. I would probably vote for him if he ever ran for political office. I believe him.
Love that. One takeaway is to always go to the funeral. When people are mourning, they’ll always remember who’s there. The dad did it for Charles and Charles did it for the dad’s kids.
