Charles Rogers can't play in the CFL because of..... (1 Viewer)

Former Lions No. 2 overall pick Charles Rogers has already been ruled ineligible by the Canadian Football League.

He's still under NFL suspension, so the CFL can't take him. Unluckily for Winnipeg exotic dancers, Pacman Jones is no longer suspended by the big leagues and is eligible to be a Blue Bomber. Ladies, watch your ones.

Can someone explain how the NFL has control over anything the CFL does? This seems dead wrong, if a team wants to sign him; let the man play and earn some money for gawd sakes.

Yes, when the CFL makes the rule.

Refresh my recollection. Why is he under suspension by the NFL? I thought he eas out of the league because he sucked, not because he is under suspension.

The CFL in consultation with the NFL added a rule that does not allow a CFL team to sign a player currently under suspension from the NFL. IIRC, this was done after Ricky Williams played in the CFL.

This reminds me of the time Kevin Arnold's older brother, Wayne, was not allowed to enlist in the military because he was too short.

Not sure if this is it or not, but...

He was suspended in 05 for drug use for 4 games ... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2180060

Did he stay on a roster long enough to serve those suspended games out?
If this four-year old suspension is what this is based upon, then I would think the NFL might waive this rule in this case. The rule seems pretty obviously aimed toward barring players on rosters who are currently suspended from passing their time by playing in the CFL. I don't think it's meant to bar a player out of football entirely from trying to restart his career.

It's more like the circus rejecting an applicant to serve as its bearded lady because she's too ugly.

"But a return to the NFL could be complicated. There is the issue of the $8.5 million he must repay the Lions because his drug suspension put him in default of his contract -- something Rogers declined to discuss, though he has yet to repay the team. And if the NFL decides to re-enter Rogers in its substance-abuse program, it means another positive test will bring a one-year suspension, a fact that could make him less attractive to NFL teams."

"Rogers says he hasn't touched drugs since testing positive for Vicodin last November, though he admits he had drinks recently with friends after he volunteered at a free football camp for kids conducted by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, another Saginaw native. "Everybody got together, had a few beers," Rogers says. "Nothing really major."

Ricky Williams was the last in a long list of NFL players who came to the CFL after being suspended for drug use of some kind. The Canadian Public had a major outcry after the most recent (probably due to the high profile of Ricky Williams at the time) and the CFL created a new rule shortly thereafter stating that they will not allow players on drug suspensions to play there.most of these players ended up being nothing but problems anyhow, and I'm sure this contributed to the issue as well, but it was the public outcry that created the motovation for the rule.
