Charles Rogers looking impressive: (1 Viewer)

Da Guru

Fair & Balanced
As I have stated in the past I have a good friend who is tight with a couple of Lion ### coaches, he coaches their kids in high school.

Last year they said Rogers was pure junk and could be cut. I just saw my buddy at a golf outing on Saturday and he said he was told that "so far" Chuck has been very, very impressive. Like all of a sudden something clicked.

Mike Martz has taken a special interest in Rogers dues to his field stretching speed.

Personally I will believe it when I see it, but there is no doubt that Rogers has the talent, maybe now he is realizing what it takes to be a pro player.

I want Rogers to do well, as he represents great value. Actually, whoever the #2 ends up being represents great value IMO. The only WR who is being targetted in Martz off is R. Williams.

What he told me was that last year Rogers would not watch film, would do his weight and conditioning training half assed, and practice when he felt like it.

This year he has not missed a conditioning session, has been in all the time doing the film work needed.

That in itself has to help. I was also told the reason he was not playing that much last season was because after 3-4 plays he was gassed, not that he was not good enough as a wR , he was just never in good enough game shape after his suspension.

Again, after 3 seasons I will believe when I see it on the field, but keep an eye on him in pre-season for sure.

On a side note, I saw Jeff Backus Buschs Supermarket in Plymouth, the friggen guy is huge! I weight 215 and he had to weigh at least 100 lbs more than me.

I told him he has to move his feet better this year so the speed rushers don`t blow by him. (Yeah right) I just said hey Jeff! He was cool...

I just traded for him in one of my dynasty leagues last week. A conditional pick. 2007 2nd round if he scores more than 4 TDs, and a 2007 3rd if he doesn't.

Did they say anything about Mike Williams or the QB situation?
No, but I see him every other week or so. I will ask. This is the same guy who told me after the first mimi-camp three years ago that Roy Williams was going to blow away Rogers and I did not believe him.

I posted that here and was laughed out of the forum, because Rogers scored a TD in 4 of his first 5 games before getting hurt and people were still high on him.

Interesting. Thanks for posting this. Remember what happened when Mike Martz took a special interest in Isaac Bruce? This is definitely a situation that bears watching.

With Rogers it has never been about talent, the guy was as immature as they come getting of of college.

I think he has three kids by three different mothers 2 in HS and one in college, has been smoking pot since who knows when.

Rogers needed a wake up call, like he may be out of this league soon like David Terrell and many other talented WRs who never quite get what it means to be a pro.

Hopefully in his fourth season he has finally grown up a bit and it putting forth the effort needed.

Bruce was good before Martz
I think you misunderstood my post, or possibly forgot that Martz took over as the Rams' WR coach in 1995. In 1994, before Martz took over the WRs, Bruce had 21/272/3 receiving. In 1995, in Martz's first season as his position coach, Bruce had 119/1781/13 receiving, one of the best WR seasons of all time. Was it all Martz? I'm sure it wasn't, but I'm sure Martz contributed to his breakout.EDIT: Martz Bio

That was my favorite fantasy draft pick of all time. I took him in the final round and almost took some backup RB instead, but decided to pick him because he has my name. I called out "Isaac Bruce WR Rams" and got some weird looks from guys, told them my reason and got a good laugh from everyone. First time I was ever really glad my folks named me Bruce. Worked out pretty well.

Your quite the man to admit that. In the final round of a draft there should be no explanation needed.

Bottom line is that his value is so low right now, you can't do wrong with drafting him or acquiring him in dynasty. He was a Moss-light-like talent coming out of school, if he turns it around you will feel gloat yourself as a genuis for taking a flier on him.

the guy couldn't stay healthyworking out with florence griffith joyner's husband(some olympic woman think it was her) changed everything for him IMO

ETA I had forgotten Martz was WR coach that early on so...very good point by you

Good to hear. He was my top-rated rookie in his draft class. I hope he can get his act together.

The health problems were after 1995... they were in 1997 & 1998. IIRC he had recurring hamstring problems. I think that's when he worked out with FloJo's husband (or whoever) and got past it for 1999 and beyond.

Would the emergence of Rogers as a strong #2 in Detroit help or hurt Roy Williams? It seems like it would help open things up for Williams and prevent double teaming. Thoughts?

In Martz offense?... I think that is a good thing.

As a Lions fan, it's a great thing. For Roy's stats, just having someone else getting attention downfield will help some.

6 of one, half dozen of the other. If Williams is good enough to need double-teaming (and he could be), I doubt Charles Rogers (or any other Det WR) will suddenly be good enough as well to negate the double team. On the flip side, if Williams doesn't need to be double-teamed, then his performance isn't going to be affected (re: enhanced) all that much by the value of the other guy on the field.

So now Millen is saying he could cut Rogers or Williams... as I saw in other posts DET has 7WR so someone has to go. What kind of hit does DET take against the cap if they cut Rogers?

Very unlikely either gets cut. Rogers has been looking good and is only making like 700k this year. Williams would kill the cap. You'll see someone else go, it may even be Scotty Vines.

This same drivel has been regurgitated for the last 2 seasons. Martz in town or not, I am not wasting a pick on him again.

To those taking a late round flier on him, good luck.

Him moving from the bottom of the depth chart to #2 is regurgitated every year?

Tom Kowalski of mlive.com notes that media reports that Lions' wide receiver has moved into the #2 position are inaccurate.

Rogers is working with the #2 offense, meaning that he has not yet worked his way back to the starting lineup. However, he was working with the #3 offense in minicamps, so he is moving in the right direction.

No I am pretty sure you know what I meant. The Charles Rodgers Super Sleeper threads is what I am referring to. edit to remove smart ### comment - it is Friday after all.

It depends.Ideally, you want the #2 WR to be enough of a threat that he has to be accounted for which will open up things for the #1, but not so good that he will steal significant looks from the #1.

You want an Eric Parker type as the #2 WR as opposed to Isaac Bruce.

 By all reports the attitude is right this year. I don't remember that being said before. I think this year is a decent bet.

and THIS year(as of now anyway) , its low risk, high reward . . . right now you can get him late . . . the last few years, that wasn't necessarily the case; and if he does well in preseason, you won't be getting him late if you draft around Labor Day . . .
