Chase Coffman come on down (1 Viewer)

The Bengals did not tender JP Foschi or Daniel Coats, meaning Chase Coffman is unobstructed (as of right now). The Bengals could (and should) make a move at the position in free agency (Ben Watson?) or the draft (Jermaine Gresham?) - but Coffman should get a long look in camp no matter what. He's a natural receiver with great body control and hands, even if he is not explosive or quick/fast. The Bengals could let Coles go this offseason, and they don't seem to like Bubba Caldwell as any more than a slot receiver. Coffman could easily become the de facto #2 target, and Carson Palmer actually forced the ball to the TE at times this past season to his own detriment, because Coats and Foschi were poor at best. With a reliable route runner who catches anything thrown in his vicinity, a good thing could be developing - Coffman is a nice offseason WW pickup in dynasty leagues where he has been forgotten because 09 was a redshirt year.

:lmao:

Yea, but is the guy ever going to develop enough as a blocker to see the field consistently?

With the Bengals turning into a power running team, I don't see CC being a 3 down TE.

Thanks for the tip, Bloom. I was quite a fan of Coffman when he got drafted, but a little surprised when the Bengals had a couple of journeymen in front of him. Hopefully by the beginning of the season he'll be more developed as a prospect and ready to contribute. I wouldn't put it past the Bengals to add another weapon in the passing game, however.

I asked bengals beat writer Joe Reedy his thoughts on the Bengals offseason plans at TE and he said:

Draft a name TE and try to re-sign Kelly or Foschi.
So Coffman is far from the anointed one, but he should have a chance to get his foot in the door in camp. If he flops, then cut him loose from your dynasty team, but if he earns snaps, he is a natural in the passing game and the Bengals have a target vacuum...

I dont think he'll ever be a 3-down TE, but he can definitely become one of Palmer's favorite third down and red zone targets if he can get on the field.

I was pretty unimpressed with him at Missouri. I don't like the way he moves. He's lanky and skinny with extremely long legs.

I think this move says more about Coats and Foschi than Coffman, though you never know.

It definitely does, but it doesn't change the fact that the depth chart opened ahead of him. Im not sayin the Bengals like him at all, but it still gets his foot in the door.

Foschi/Sherry were roster filler when Kelly/Utecht were injured. Coats has bounced between FB and TE. No reason to pay any of them when it's likely they can get Foschi back if needed. I'd imagine they're planning on re-signing Kelly as the primary blocking TE option. I think this definitely says more about Foschi/Coats than it does about Coffman.

For fantasy purposes, though, I agree with Bloom that Coffman is a reasonable roster. But he won't play much until he learns to block and, foot injury or otherwise, he's shown no aptitude in a three point stance at all. There are packages in this offense where Foschi was split wide, so Coffman could grow into a 20-30 catch option with upside in the next two seasons. He'll clearly get chances as a former third round pick. But he's a longshot to ever be more than a spread receiving option on passing downs.

I scooped him up at the end of the season for this exact reason. Palmer needs that next reliable target. Coffman was considered a project who had to learn how to play in-line when he was drafted. He should get better as he has the size and strength to be adequate in the trenches. The receiving ability is certainly there and I could see the Bengals using him similar to how Finley was used in Green Bay- flexed out in the slot. Many people had already written off Finley at this time of year last year, so I have a little hope that there is a chance he turns into something

So I've heard that they are trying to sign someone or draft someone, seeing as how a couple on the team do not think Coffman is really talented.

Why would they try to turn a WR (Matt Jones) into a TE if they though Coffman was the answer?

Answer: They don't like Coffman

They've denied on their website that they are trying to turn Matt Jones into a TE.-QG

No, the answer is: That was some columnist's suggestion / speculation. It was never true.
