***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (5 Viewers)

Sounds like Okereke is a lock at this point. And Montgomery is gone.
If Montgomery goes (especially if it's for reasonable money), I'm going to officially start believing the Bijan Robinson rumors.
I'd be shocked if the Bears take Bijan in the 1st. If he slides to one of the second rounders (unlikely), then maybe.
As soon as I saw the trade you guys made, I immediately thought they could trade back yet again to somewhere around 20 and take Bijan or one of the top few WRs.
I guess it just depends on the compensation. A future 1st sure. A mid 2nd this year?? Meh, maybe.
Probably better just going with top OL or DE at 9.

Edwards was a great signing. Fantastic LB. Instant upgrade.

Word is they’re targeting McGlinchey. Terrible loss for my Niners. Would be a massive improvement to the Bears offense.

Interesting take, for sure. CHI has so many holes to fill on both sides of the ball that IF Monty isn't resigned, I suspect CHI will look into the 4th round or later for a between the tackles kind of back. I don't have faith that Herbert can be a bell cow.

Hargrave to SF. Rich get richer.
yikes. I was hoping CHI would have that position locked before the draft. Might have to consider a small trade up if Carter falls. Otherwise, maybe a slight trade down for a guy like Kancey?
And Taylor to KC. Wtf Poles!
This feels to me like a fantasy auction, where a couple of guys spend a lot of their money on one or two guys then have no depth. Meanwhile, another team waits and gets a lot of very good players at discount prices and wins the championship.

Like Edwards a signing a ton. Much better than Okereke, honestly, I like Edwards more than Roquan Smith.

Very glad they didn't sign Jawaan Taylor, 20 mill a year for the worst run blocker in the NFL would have been a huge mistake, and likely will be in KC too.

Plenty of quality OL left, though I will maintain, its not THAT big of a need. McGlinchey would have been nice, though I like McGary more, if they can get him.

The TJ Edwards signing is great.

If you think of it in the context of the Roquan Smith trade, the Bears have gotten:

TJ Edwards at $6.5M/yr
2023 pick 53
2023 pick 148

instead of
Roquan Smith at $20M/yr

(Plus the Bears were worse in 2022, which isn't a bad thing.)

Business heating up now. Tremaine Edmunds come on down.....
Less impressed with this signing than Edwards. Edmunds was basically looking like a bust of a 1st rounder until breaking out in his contract season. He was an exceptionally young rookie, so maybe the learning curve was just bigger, but (4/72) feels very risky for a guy without a great track record.

Love the Nate Davis signing. He helps a lot more than Taylor or McGlinchey would have.

Nevermind, apparently Tremaine Edmunds is the Roquan Smith replacement.

Bears get

Tremaine Edmunds at $18M/yr
2023 pick 53
2023 pick 148

Roquan Smith at $20M/yr

I like the TJ Edwards signing more than the other two contracts. IMO the difference between the 3 LBs is much smaller than the over $10M/yr difference in the contracts.

Truth be told, I think Roquan is the worst LB of the 3. Love the Edwards signing, would have preferred to not sign Edmunds. Just would have preferred not to spend so much at LB.

G Nate Davis contract reported as 3 years, $30M, with $19.25M gtd.

Solid signing. Lets them move on from Cody Whitehair, who hasn't been as good & would also be getting about $10M/yr.

No reason they can't keep both. Whitehair should be playing C. He's a very good C and a decent G.

I like Edmunds. He is a big linebacker who is agile for his size. In the right system I think can thrive. I trust Eberflus' evaluation of him.

I'm happy with today's activity so far. These look like smart moves that aren't breaking the bank. I think the signal is on that we're going DL heavy in this draft.

Whitehair blows. Still need a C and RT
I get a feeling RT will be addressed at 1.9.

Stilk available of interest for the Bears

Dre'Mont Jones, DT, Broncos

Samson Ebukam, DE, 49ers

Kaleb McGary, OT, Falcons

Zach Allen, DT, Cardinals

Not really a huge fan of anyone coming out at tackle that early. Too much value in other positions.

This has been the Poles MO. Sign good players to moderate contracts and build through the draft. I think you're right. CHI will most likely draft DL heavy and it's a great draft to do so. LOTS of edge guys out there after the first tier that are very good. Not as much DT depth, but still quite a few after Carter. Now I'm wondering if CHI doesn't trade down into the high teens / low 20's and pick up a guy like Kancey or Bresee?

Doesn't seem like we agree on much, but we agree on that. OT at 9 is too high.

Still like McGary being out there and think he's better than the likes of Taylor or McGlinchey, and likely cheaper too.

I wouldn't say my football acumen is that high. You're probably right more than I am. Still need to see the Bears winning to believe in them.
Dre'Mont and Orlando still out there.

After in season spending and draft pick signings, the Bears are still sitting at about 38 Mol in available space right now. They could easily sign both if they wanted to, but I doubt that happens. Probably one more biggish signing and then some smaller ones.

Along those lines. I'd be ok trading back and getting aanother second. Hopefully some teams are high on one of the OT/CB/WRs in class.

the true strength of this draft class lies between picks 20 and 40.

Let's grab Jones and take a little break.
I think the fear is that Allen and Hargrave's contracts set the DT market a tad higher than expected. Whats a fair deal for Jones? Top 10 Money?
Full terms for the #Seahawks and DT Dre'Mont Jones:
-- 3 years, $51.53M
-- $23.5M in Year 1
-- $35.02M over two years.

Very reasonable. Smh
Less than I thought he'd go for, but still overpaid. I'm disappointed to see this one get away.

Bears signed DL Demarcus Walker.

According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, it’s a three-year contract for Walker worth $21 million with $16 million guaranteed.

Pretty ok not getting Dre'Mont Jones. I think he's a very overrated player. Would have liked to have gotten Dalvin Tomlinson, who went 4-57 to the Browns, but oh well.

I actually like DeMarcus Walker a lot more than Jones for the money. He might just be better anyway, as he's very versatile playing both inside and outside.

The way its shaping up after day 1 of FA, I keep looking at a guy like Lukas Van Ness at #9. I think ideally that pick is either him, Tyree Wilson, or Christian Gonzalez.

I just saw a Vrabel clip talking about Walker and how he can play multiple spots which is great for our situation. We have holes all over the front line.

He's a hard worker and looks to be a good locker room guy. Said everything finally clicked for him last season.
