***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (7 Viewers)

I'm feeling pretty indifferent about the rest of the year. My two biggest desires are for a coaching change in 2024 and the Panthers to lose out.

These coaches will continue to show they cant cut it. Only need Poles to make the right call, which is another story.

Panthers remaining schedule... I'll give them 2 wins. Split with the Bucs and beat one of Titans, Falcons, Packers. (3-14 overall)
Cowboys
Titans
bucs
Saints
Falcons
Packers
Bucs
Jags

I think its going to be between Carolina and NYG for the #1 pick. I'm not sure the NYG have another W in them.

Bears remaining Schedule... I think there is a good chance we go 4 straight Ls here. Detroit looks for real. Vikes & Browns are tough on the road. Cards, Falcons, Pack are all winnable games, but the Bears have nothing to play for at that point. Maybe go 1-2. End the year at 4-13 Overall
Lions
Vikings
Lions
Browns
Cardinals
Atlanta
Packers
I wouldn’t be shocked if they beat Detroit at home. Detroit has bigger fish to fry than to get up for the Bears. One team is playing for playoff seeding , the other is playing for their jobs.

Stop. The Lions are going to cruise twice against this team.

Lions are a much different team. They weren't a playoff team last year. This year they're up there with the elites.

Good luck the next 3 weeks fellas.

The series was 10-10 in the 2010s, and it's 3-3 in the 2020s.

Never easy winning divisional games but these feel like they count for two when you get one.

I think we get to see if the Defense is for real this week. They've looked better of late but Detroit is solid in both the run and pass. I don't think the Flus style of bend but don't break D gets it done this week.

Real story is JF again. Maybe he is rusty, maybe he saw some things that worked for the O while on the sideline and can implement them into his game.

I'd put my money on losing both games to Detroit this year.

It’s improved, but the rankings are a result of their soft schedule. I think the Lions put up 30+ on them.

Someone in Vegas likes the Bears. The line dropped from 10 to 7.5 after Fields was named the starter.

Let this staff tank its way into another early pick and fire everyone at the end of the year.

I think we're done with JF. Nice to see him play well and hopefully he can be flipped for a couple decent draft picks. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd.

Restart the rookie QB clock this year and use the other first rounder on a top tier talent or trade back for some more picks.

Cut Whitehair and Jackson. Resign Johnson, Mooney, Santos, and maybe E. St. Brown for depth. Cases can be made for Forman, Justin Jones and Ngakoue.

Sign a C, WR, S, and Edge in FA. Draft best available players.

FWIW - I think most of the top QBs in this class could run Getsy's offense. So if they decided to start over, no harm there.

Fresh start might be good for JF. Falcons? Titans? I still think he's the real deal, but sometimes even great individuals get divorced. Good people, bad marriage.

Falcons for sure and recently saw the Raiders as an interesting option.

I've lost too much faith in the current staff. I don't know who to blame for historic losses, but we've already taken a couple this year. Flus is statistically the worst coach in the History of the Chicago Bears.

0-16 vs winning records, 0-9 in the division.

My prediction is Harbaugh jumps when Chicago hands the keys to him this offseason. The allure of two top 5 draft picks (including number 1) will be the tie breaker over the other terrible teams.
They trade Fields for a pick or two (Atlanta?), they draft Williams and whoever the best player available is at OT or DE.

They won't pay. He wanted the job when they went Eberflus. But he was looking for a Gruden deal. Maybe that price has come down.

Really good observation. I've been thinking that Fields to the Steelers might be a solid fit assuming they get rid of Canada. They have two 4ths, so a 2nd/4th in 2024 and a conditional 3rd/4th in 2025 might be a win/win.
Also, I'm done if Getsy or Eberflus are still with the team after the season. Getsy may be regarded in the inner circles, but he can not play call his way out of a paper bag.

Bears are a mess. Hearing that Montez Sweat only played 63% of snaps against the Lions and missed several third down snaps is infuriating. When the press asked Flus about his usage he said their system is a rotational system and we want to keep guys fresh.

There is some serious disconnect on player acquisition and personnel usage. Now Poles looks worse for trading an early pick and signing a guy to a massive contract when hes a "rotational end".

This team can't fix basic stuff.

DL players tire out really quickly and rotating them has been shown to be effective. However, you have to be smart about it, and you don't pull someone like Sweat on third downs.

I understand the argument for rotating edge rushers, but he was outsnapped by Ngakoue and only had one more snap than Demarcus Walker. He played 39 snaps last week, which isn't a lot for a DE.

My problem is if he's a guy who makes everyone around him better and we're paying him Bosa, Garrett, Crosby money... he needs to be out there. If our system really is about keeping guys fresh, he needs to start making more impact plays when he is in there.

No choking this week! We did try though, but the dummy Vikes tried harder.

Flus - First W in the North. Congrats. Way too little and too late. He isn't a head coach, but I've changed my tune on his Defense. It's looking solid lately.
Getsy - He needs to go. I'll boycott if they bring him back next year. The commentators were literally laughing at his play calling in the booth on national TV.
Fields - Needs a fresh start. Hopefully the Bears can get a couple picks for him. Doubtful any team sends a first.
Pace - Looking better after attaching his wagon to the trainwreck Carolina is. Sweat is a stud and some of the rookies are coming on lately.

Bears probably pull out 6 wins this year

Can you share where Poles came from or how the bears hired him?
They were showing him int he suite level last night and he doesn't have that look of a GM to me.
He looks green to me.

Bill Belichick is gonna be free in a few weeks...I'm just saying, the defense is ripe for him and he can try and hide the football in Fields forearm on offense although it looks like Fields is a fumbling machine right now. You have possibly the No 1 pick and another Top 5-10, Coach BB could possibly leverage that into some instant upgrades and at one time the pats were really good at trading down and having more picks the following year, seemed like they had 10-12 picks every year when they were really at the top of the league.

-I don't think he would help developing a QB but I can almost assure you who he will try and make his OC if he decides to continue coaching

Is the best case scenario path fire the HC/OC and trade Fields for a 2024 2? Is that the likeliest path?

Who would trade for Fields is kind of interesting. If they keep Fields, they can probably get a lot from NE or NYG for the 1.1.

Poles is a KC product. Offensive Lineman from Boston College IIRC. I think he worked in scouting for the Chiefs after not making an NFL roster as a player. Rose through the ranks with KC under multiple GMs into the position of Executive Director of Player Personnel. Pretty widely respected young guy in the business. The Bears focused on him after whiffing on Omar Khan of the Steelers.

[NO] to Belichick

He was KC's player of personnel director. Bears hired Bill Polian as a consultant to pick their next HC/GM. He picked Flus and Poles. Poles is young, but has a decent resume and was reportedly a big part to KC building the team they did (people always say that).

Poles has been an average GM so far. He isn't terrible but has several big mistakes on his resume already. So far I think his best quality is that he is patient. He's not about throwing big money at the best available player in FA just to fill a hole on the team. His talent evaluation is suspect though. Still too early to really tell.

If anyone, the Bears are looking at Harbaugh. However the real challenge is ownership. Its a mom and pop organization that wants to hire friends and family. The last thing they want is a coach or GM who questions authority or fights back. That limits our options.

Fire both. Although Firing the OC is way higher on my priority list.

I think the top two contenders for JF are the Falcons and Raiders. Both teams that should be picking in the mid to late teens. Probably out of the top 3-4 QB range in the draft. Both teams that could make runs if they had a competent QB.

JF would have to really ball out down the stretch to get a first in return, but who knows, maybe Atlanta is willing to part with the 20th overall pick for JF. I think JF is a top 15 QB in the NFL. Although his ceiling is probably just outside the top 9-10 guys. Very affordable in 2024, and 20 mil in 2025.

If you believe he is potentially top 9-10, why wouldn’t you want to use our draft capital to improve the rest of the team (with better coaching) vs rolling the dice on a rookie quarterback who has never taken an NFL snap and has a high chance of busting?

Because we're a year or two away from paying him top 10 money. That scares the heck out of me.

Teams who try to win championships with the Goff, Prescott, Cousins, Carr tier of QBs tend to not have long term success. I think I'd like to avoid that and go with a top tier rookie should the Bears be in that position.

They might be more willing to listen to a former Chicago Bear, think he would be a breath of fresh air for Chicago if he leaves Michigan...which talking to local UM alums down here in South Florida, many come back and forth for the seasons, my back channeling says he doesn't want to go anywhere, likes his job at Michigan and unless fired is likely to stay on as long as he wants.

-I still think he should be separated from the University for his role in all of this, he has to know what is happening at all times in his program and I believe he does.
The word is he doesn't get along with the AD at Michigan but is adored by the president there.

The CFP could have a lot to do with his decision.

That's what I'm thinking.

It occurred to me as I was thinking about Fields and what you all could do with him.
-Trade, I was thinking 4th Rd pick which isn't a lot for a former 1st however...his base salary is $1M next year or thereabouts lets' say.
OK, his 5th year option is maybe around $20M, just keeping a round number.
Would a team out there like to try Fields for the next 2 years and see if he develops more than he has so far?
Would a team like to gamble that is close to winning and has decent players but no QB...there's more than one of those types out there.
I'm thinking they could possibly squueeze a 3rd and maybe even a conditional 2nd pick that is attached to a lot of snaps or accomplishments
-And if they can live with the picks being in the 2025 Draft, they might be able to pit a couple teams against each other for Fields.

You're 4-8, still own the top pick in '24, Another top-10 1st in '24 likely, lot of options will be on the table and the defense seems to be improving.

I don't think I do it for anything less than a 2nd. He's only 24 and still has potential to improve. He's at least an average to above average QB in this league when used right. I don't think he will ever be elite, but you only need one GM to think so. At least two years for an affordable starting QB is a nice asset in itself.

Like you said, there are a handful of middling teams who are going to be looking for a QB. Free Agent class is minimal. Its basically Kirk Cousins and a bunch of cast offs.

If the Bears can't get at least an early third, I think its in their best interest to keep him. Don't give him the 5th year option and take the comp pick when someone gives him a big deal in 2025.

They’ll have to decide this coming May whether or not they’re exercising that option.

They’ll either trade him or if they decide to keep him they’ll exercise that option. Wouldn’t make sense not to.

After listening to Chase Daniels analysis on the situation I'm much more entertaining not trading JF.

Highlights...
NFL isn't good at QB evaluation..
See Bryce Young vs Brock Purdy

If you disagree and think they are in polar opposite situations, your comments are on team dynamics vs qb performance.

JF has proven he can perform in the NFL at a level that less than 50% of 1st round QBs can.

Spend the capital to put JF in a "Purdy situation" and we benefit.

Caleb or Maye in our current state is feeding a broken process

Chase sounds as good at analysis as he was playing.

Dude played in the league for 14 years earning >$41mil. I'd guess he has a pretty good idea of what an NFL QB looks like.

Well he's very wrong on this. Fields isn't a big time qb. This team isn't totally devoid of talent. They shouldn't be going thru entire games against mediocre Ds without scoring a TD.

Fields will never be a qb who can stand in the pocket, read and react, deliver. He needs to be like a Cam Newton or Lamar. Newton didn't have star studded teams and look at the success he had. But it's not long term success. Fields isn't a good as Lamar. The Bears offense is just as talented as the Ravens. How many playoff games has Lamar won?
