Chicago Questions (1 Viewer)

Michael Brown said:
Going to be in Chicago Friday - Sunday. Is Second City the best comedy club there, or is it just the one everybody has heard of? Maybe a nice dinner spot near there since we could be in the area all day (Yanks/Cubs during the day, a stop at North Ave Beach to re-enact the Frank Gallagher scene, dinner, then Second CIty...solid day/night?).

Then on Saturday we'll be doing the Chicago tourist thing. If there was one restaurant you Chicago guys would recommend (thinking high-end steak, Italian, or Asian) in the downtown area, what would it be? Also a recommendation on a cool rooftop bar with a sweet view, preferably one where we could watch the Yanks/Cubs game Saturday night, would be most appreciated.

ETA - where do we go downtown to watch the Derby Saturday? Staying at The James in River North so we'll probably be in that general area if that helps
you could try the bars near Derby-ville. It's near the Hammock District...

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. Friday game was obviously ridiculous. After the game, took an uber to North Ave Beach and got absolutely terrified walking along the wall while the water slapped up against it. Really awesome views from there though. Ended up doing Pequod's for dinner but there was still about a half hour wait even with the pseudo-reservation online, so no time for Second City afterwards. Architectural river tour Saturday morning was tremendous, burgers at the Billy Goat Tavern, hit up the OTB to place Derby bets, 360 Skydeck at the Hancock building, watched the derby at Harry Caray's where I highly recommend the Roaming Stone, and finally after realizing (duh) we're in Chicago, we hadda go for steak Saturday night. There was a place called Primehouse right in our hotel that ended up ranked first on some Chicago magazine steak list. What they lacked in atmosphere, they made up for in steak quality. I highly doubt it was anywhere near the actual best steak place in the city because there are a few spots you can't get a reservation on a weekend until July (!), but it was still pretty great.

Flying to Japan in March. Have a night before and after in CHI, and am just looking for a cheap/decent hotel near O'Hare. Any suggestions?

There’s a Hyatt right there, to the point that you dont need a Cab or Uber to get to it. I can’t imagine it meets the cheap criteria, but I’d have to think that the convience of it being right there trumps the price.

otherwise, there are plenty of places in Rosemont that you can stay

15th Anniversary next weekend we head to Chicago.

Staying EMC2.  Have reservations at Signature Room, Second City, Nomi.

Looks like weather in the 30s... what should we try during the day?  Art Museum?  Sky Deck?

Just took my girlfriend to Chicago for her first time and went to the art institute on Sat morning, she loved it. She was really surprised how many major paintings they had there.

For future reference -

Things to do:

Magnificent Mile - awesome to walk and shop and feel the life/energy in this city.

Art Institute Museum - HUGE we spent almost 3 hours here did not see it all.  I like how they don't give any "preference" to the major artists/painters.  If you aren't paying attention you will walk right past Pollock, Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, etc.

The bean/Millenium Park - you are right there, worth checking out for a minute.

Skydeck - skip this imo, see Signature comments below.  Long line gets you to another room with a long line, to another room with a long line....

Architecture River Cruise - worth doing.  Tons of great views and stories.  Gets colder out on lake.

Eat:

Remington's - while you are at the museum/bean/Millenium Park, cool place to people watch and eat a good lunch.

Pizza - did both Giordanno and Lou Malnatti's.  I don't get deep dish pizza so... whatever.

Nomi - eff this place.  Had reservation for brunch, arrived with 2 open tables by window and we were told they were unavailable.  Two couple's walked in behind us without reservation and were seated at those tables.   We left.  Super stuck up uppity place anyway and we ended up at my favorite place we ate at the whole trip.....

Bar Siena - This place was great.  Atmosphere great, food great, drinks great.  Cool metal tree going up through both levels in the middle.  Cool neighborhood.  Get a Bombo.

Signature Room - From what I saw, I would make a reservation here.  The tab will be relatively expensive, but you are going to pay $100 for these views at the skydeck (for 2 people).  The food was OK and very generic.  Was a great spot to watch the sunset and see the lights on go in the city.

Signature Room Lounge - apparently tourists use this to skip the price tag of the Skydeck.  Wait in line for elevator ride, buy a $20 drink and see the views.  Only problem is the place is a damned zoo.  People almost wrestling to gets pics of the views, vultures trying to steal tables/chairs... not enough staff to keep order.  Just spend the money and get a table in the restaurant below.

Chicago is a much cooler city than I had come to believe from brief work trips to the area.

Going to Bulls/Celtics next weekend with two buddies.

Anyone got a suggestion for a two bedroom suite downtown?
