Chiefs Coaching staff/changes (1 Viewer)

An important factor in FF IMO is to look at the offseason changes like FA pickups, trades, coaching changes, etc. made by the various teams and trying to anticipate how it will effect players fantasy values. One of the more interesting situations this year is the Kansas City Chiefs due to all the front office changes, the acquisition of a QB as well as a top 3 pick in the draft.

This team certainly has it's work cut out but there could be some reason for optimism and the potential that a lot FF'ers may overlook the team due to the dismal season last year. One of the big questions I have is about the new coaching staff...they hired Todd Haley for AZ to be the HC and I believe the OC and they also hired Clancy Pendergast from AZ as well to be the DC. I'll admit that I haven't seen a ton of AZ and although I know a bit about their offense due to their fantasy success I always wonder how much is the OC and the system and how much is the talent of the players (Warner/Fitz/Boldin). Will Haley be another Cam Cameron? What is his offensive philosophy?

How about Pendergast? What's his philosophy? Is a 4-3, 3-4 guy? Do they have the players for the scheme he wants to employ? The Chiefs had a ton of young guys on their defense, any indications on how he is with young players?

You can bank on 2 players having a great season:

Dwayne Bowe and T. Gonzalez. Other than that, I can't weight in too much.

I will say that my opinion is that Matt Cassel will end up having a low-end #1 season there.

I think they are going to be an improved team and will do better on offense then most expect. They might even grab a Wild Card spot.

Chan Gailey was retained as the OC.
ok. Do you know if they plan on running that spread offense like last year? or will they alter it with more shotguns, etc. for Cassel?

I've seen a lot of talk about an over hauled coaching staff, upgraded QB, which in turn will benefit the previously under utilized weaponry.

One problem, and it's been a problem since Roaf and Shields' days were finished, that line. Is the same ole same ole? or are they going to go Atlanta Falcons circa 2008 on us? If it's the latter good things may come from this offense, if it's the former fantasy owners investing in KC's offense in 2009 are probably going to be very disappointed.

On the plus side (for pass catchers anyway), the lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball should keep the offense throwing and throwing often.

It wasn't terrible last year. The left side is just fine with Albert and Waters, but they do need help on the right side. Still, from a FF perspective it didn't hurt the pass-catchers or QB - once an NFL-caliber one got the nod, at least. The defense is awful, so unless Cassel REALLY flames out, I don't see why the QB, WR1 and TE positions in KC won't produce pretty big numbers next year.

I think they will either win their division or be out of the playoffs. I will be really surprised given all the talent in the AFC if two teams from the AFC west make it to the post season.

Yeah, that probably makes more sense as far as division vs. wildcard. I just tend to think they will be better then most expect from a fantasy and NFL persective.
