Chiefs-Giants Talking trade for TE Gonzalez (1 Viewer)

New Update from Rotoworld.

The Chiefs announced Monday that they will honor Tony Gonzalez prior to their Week 7 game against the Titans after he broke Shannon Sharpe's record for the most receiving yards ever by a tight end.

Odd timing for the announcement considering Gonzo asked to be traded Sunday. This would indicate that Gonzalez still has a decent chance to stay in Kansas City. Gonzo broke Sharpe's record in Week 5. KC is currently coming off a bye.

Maybe they're trading him to Tennessee?

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, and the Chiefs appeared pessimistic they could reach a deal for Gonzalez by then. The New York Giants have been the most interested in making a trade, but the sides were far apart on the compensation.

The Chiefs were asking for a third-round pick, and the Giants offered a sixth-rounder.
It seems like a fourth may get it done.
why would they trade him for a 4th if the Bills already offered a 3rd?although maybe the report of the Bills offer is inaccurate as it would seem like an easy deal for the Chiefs to make if that was their initial asking price.

i'm really surprised that the NYG or another team (bills?) who will have a late round 2nd are not ponying that up for Gonzo.

A late 2nd for Gonzo seems like a no-brainer to me.

I agree blend. Tony G is just the kind of player who's worth trading a 2nd or 3rd round pick for. Consumate pro, still very effective, team guy, willing to block (isn't a primadonna), reasonable contract, etc. He'd come right in and add to both the team's performance and locker room. I'm shocked teams aren't falling all over themselves trying to get the guy.

A Giants beat writer thinks that the Giants MAY be considering offering S. Moss as part of a deal for Gonzalez becuase Moss was a healthy scratch from last night's game

They should...Burress, Toomer, Hixon, Smith and Tyree?!? Yeah, I would throw him in regardless.

I don't know if this has been posted:

(from PFT)

EDWARDS’ PRESS CONFERENCE MOVED

It might mean something. Then again, it might mean nothing.

The Chiefs have announced that Herm Edwards’ press conference has been moved from 3:00 p.m. EDT to 4:00 p.m. EDT.

The timing is significant because the trade deadline is 4:00 p.m. EDT. Our guess is that the Chiefs want to have Edwards available in the event that he’s needed for any negotiations or strategery sessions from 3:00 until 4:00. Or, possibly, they’re working on something and they want to have the extra time to get it done (or not get it done) before Edwards meets the media.

Three Chiefs currently are known to be on the block — tight end Tony Gonzalez, running back Larry Johnson, and (per Jay Glazer during his Monday spot with Whitlock on Rome) linebacker Napoleon Harris.

Heard on ESPN radio that it doesn't look like Gonzales is going to be traded

I think the report was per Michael Smith

It is possible that TG doesn't want to go to the Bills. It is also possible that Peterson is overpricing TG -- he has been known to do that in the past.

Good teams missed the boat on this one. BADLY. I'm going to laugh at those good but borderline teams who are in a tight playoff game and need a first down late in the fourth quarter, only to see everyone covered and the game go down.

Big whiff on the part of teams like Buffalo and Philly if you ask me. They won't do #### with the mediocre pick they kept.

 The Bills have made out real well with their past couple drafts, but you have to imagine it would have been WELL worth the price to get a known commodity at Gonzo's level.

If the Bills could have gotten Gonzo for an 09 3rd, this is a humongous whiff on their part. Their TE's have sucked for years, and Gonzo could have put them over the top into legit contender status in the AFC.

Sounds like a disappointed Chiefs' fan here. If that's the case, I'm not sure you should be in a laughing mood considering the state of your team.

Is this officially a dead topic, or could a trade still be announced like the Roy Williams deal?

I find it equally hard to believe that the Chiefs would not take a 3rd round pick for a guy who wants to be gone as I do that no other team was willing to pony up a 2nd.

This seemed like a deal that had to happen. I know mid-season trades are rare, but this one seemed like one that just made too much sense.

I couldn't care much less. A stud TE or a middling draft pick ... whatever.I'd be disappointed in this matter if I was a Bills/Giants/Eagles fan, among others.

Guys, what is being said here in KC is that it came down to the Giants and Eagles. Philly offered a 6th and the G-Men offered a 4th, which KC turned down.

If NY made that offer, it should have been enough....just another stain on Carl Peterson's image

If NY made that offer, it should have been enough...
Hell no it shouldn't. The Giants can shove a late fourth-round pick up their ### and keep praying that Kevin Boss learns how to get open.
I agree. A 4th is not enough for TG. I thought Peterson turned down a 3rd. Seems like someone should have offered a 3rd. He is a perfect hired gun for a Super Bowl run - and he would be so hungry to get it. Perfect fit in either Philly or NY IMO. I find it shocking that neither team was willing to give up what will be a mid-late 3rd rounder for him.

They won the SB with Kevin Boss bud.....Having a HOF TE is great - but name me the last SB champ who their TE was their #1 player? I guess Shannon Sharpe in BAL, but they had other great players.KC brass, fans, etc always over-estimated the true value of Gonzalez.a 3rd or 4th should have been enough.

They won it for many reasons before Kevin Boss. And that was last year. The point is that New York would be a lot stronger with Gonzalez than they are currently without him. The price for acquiring him? A pathetic late third-round pick. Something like the 110-120th UNPROVEN KID taken in a college draft.

No, KC brass and fans (plus all the other media and fans echoing the exact same senitment) haven't overrated Gonzalez' value -- foolish teams have underrated it.

Come back to me next May and compare the scrub these teams draft with that precious pick, and I'll promise you now that I'm taking Gonzalez over him 100 times out of 100.

Not sure why he didn't want to go to Buffalo or GB.
Maybe the nasty winters in those two cities made him not want to go there? That wouldn't surprise me.
I agree......I was thinking that the entire time.Gonzalez is a California guy, and I think if SF, SEA, etc would have had a need/fit, he would have been cool with that. There was a late rumor that ARIZ got interested, but that does not fit the criteria of a team close to a ring.

Philadelphia in particular. They're probably already targetting a backup OG from BYU with their third-round pick.
May want to check the draft spots of all 3 of their starting linebackers & probowl defensive end there buddy. Rumor out of Philly is a 2nd & a 5th is what Peterson was looking for.

Ok...article today from Milwaukee is that GB had the best offer on the table at a 3rd rounder and KC declined.

They wanted a 2nd.

Gonzo reported did not want to go to Buffalo, but would have gone to GB and is willing to play for 3 more years.

He was reported pissed that KC did not trade him for a 3rd rounder and thinks they were demanding too much in a trade.

Wait, so you actually expect us to believe that King Carl overplayed his hand on this one? I find that hard to believe.

PHI and NYC aren't exactly known for their warm, mild winters

No but they are big markets that are contenders. I imagine it was all a balance of market/weather/team....but with this news coming out about him wanting the GB deal, weather may not have been that big of a deal. Gonzalez must not think Buffalo is a contender yet.

8-8 last-place finish last year, 3-3 last-place as we stand in 2008. It's obviously working. Mediocre record for a mediocre team with a mediocre defense. Chris Gocong > Tony Gonzalez. Maybe they'll find another keeper with next year's middling third-round pick (thanks to another fourth-place finish).

Or maybe they'll keep the 2nd pick that King Carl was really seeking and draft another young multi-faceted playmaker like Desean Jackson. Have fun rebuilding around your woman-beating high-mileage thug runningback from the hoods of....State College.
