Chiefs Homers: Tyler Thigpen For Real?

Looking over his stats, I was really surprised considering he was drafted in Round 7 (Minnesota) and came out of a I-AA school in Coastal Carolina.

From Week 8 on his numbers were: 192/330 (58.2%) for 2216 yards (6.72 YPA) with 16 TD vs. 8 INT. He also had 53 carries for 325 yards (6.13). IIRC, this is when the Chiefs started employing the spread for Thigpen.

We've seen QBs come from out of nowhere before (Matt Hasselbeck, Tom Brady, Tony Romo) and just from the numbers, it seems that (at least in a spread offense), Thigpen can definitely be a solid QB to lead a team. He'll only be 25 years old in 2009 and is listed at 6'3" 235 pounds so size doesn't seem to be an issue.

Any reason why Thigpen doesn't get a chance next season? Herm firing? General dislike of Thigpen from the new GM?

I would guess it depends on who the HC nad GM will be. Many times the new regime will go looking for "their guy," and if so that could pose a problem for Thigpen.

Given that Bradford and Sanchez don't figure to declare for the draft, and they both look like good prospects at this point, the 2010 draft seems like a good time for a team like KC to plan to draft a QB. It would also give a new regime time to evaluate Thigpen after a full offseason of workouts as a starter. While a year is a long time to wait to start to develop your QB of the future if Thigpen doesn't in fact pan out, this seems like a pretty reasonable approach to take.

Based on what I've read many believe his stats were better than his actual on the field play.

Can't offer much of an opinion based on my viewings because...well, I didn't watch much of the Chefs. I was punished with bad football enough from the Browns.

Let's just say for ha-has that Pioli becomes the GM, McDaniels then follows as head coach, and the Pats trade Cassel for a draft pick. Where does that leave Thigpen? Again, not expecting that to happen, but a lot could happen.

I agree. We're just spit-ballin' until we see at least a GM hired. We don't even know for sure that Herm's out, though I hope he's renting and not owning at this point. I'm just arguing for an approach that seems reasonable under the circumstances. Of course, it's also become popular for teams in recent years to still draft QB's high even while they have someone on the roster who still has potential (e.g. Brees-Rivers, and Anderson-Quinn).

I've read the same (but not seen with my own eyes). I can't remember which game it was, but one football analyst said he should have had 6 picks in a game but got lucky because the defense dropped the ball. He seems like a late QB2 that you take a flyer on. I think those who owned him this year may take him too high next season unless there is lots of coaching uncertainty. I'd be happy if he slipped and I could stash as my 3rd QB. The rushing yards are a big plus.

I too must confess little watching of him aside from highlights. What kinds of throws are Thigpen's strengths, and who in the NFL does he seem to most compare to in terms of level of talent and skill set?

Yeah, that is the general sentiment.....I will look for some responses I have already given Re: Thigpen. A little too busy right now to type out a thesis on why TT is not the answer.

I haven't seen the Chiefs play this year with Thigpen in either, so I was wondering how he has looked too.

Hey, I'm not expert on the Chiefs but NFL ticket allowed me to catch a bit more then you guys it seems so I guess I'll add my two cents. I'm sure Chiefs homers will have better information then me but from what I saw he looked very inconsistent at times. Some games he'd look like a developing QB and you thought he settled in and then the next game he couldn't seem to want to stay in the pocket at all. He has very quick feet, pretty good speed for a QB so rolling out isn't really a problem.

Like I said he was pretty inconsistent but so was his offense. I don't think Herm knew what he wanted to do each game, his best rusher would have 30 carries one game and then three the next. Thigpen also really didn't have anybody to throw to except Gonzo and Bowe which would both see the lions share of the coverage. When they picked up Mark Bradley he made him a relevant part in the offense and made some plays.

All in all, he has decent arm strength but nothing to write home about... quick feet... decent accuracy. He showed me enough to want to see what he does next season, with another off-season, mini-camp.. he might take the next step and mature.
