Chiefs to release Law, Bell, Reed, Dunn

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

The Chiefs continued their rebuilding process by telling four more veteran players they would be released, sources said.

One, cornerback Ty Law, was a starter last season. Two, linebacker Kendrell Bell and defensive tackle James Reed, are former starters while the fourth player, tight end Jason Dunn, was once a key reserve.

All of the players are over 30 except Bell, who turns 30 in July.

The Chiefs have either released or will release six veterans who had 2008 contracts. Offensive tackle John Welbourn and wide receiver Eddie Kennison, both also over 30, were previously released.

Your title says "Edwards", but the report says "Reed"

Uncle Herm is getting his way it seems. I like it, and I think there are still a couple cuts to be made.....most notably Patrick Surtain.

Yikes. Do they expect to sign FA corners or draft them?If they didn't go CB in the first, and Brohm fell to them in the 2nd, which way do they go?

From what they are saying on Sirius, the Chiefs feel they are set at the QB position  however they may draft or sign a QB to push Croyle.

My god. Where would you start rebuilding this team? ;)Should have traded Johnson for whatever they could get last year.
Agreed, they let that team get real old real fast. If only they could trade Gonzo and LJ for a couple of 2nds and try to move on. I am not a Chief's fan but I loved watching their games back when they were very competitive and Arrowhead would be rocking in the snow.

remember when Kendrell Bell was one of the best young LBs in the NFL?
You could almost change that to: Remember when [insert name of Steelers LB who left team in FA] was one of the best young LBs in the NFL?
Mike Vrabel? :lmao:
I wouldn't say when he left Pitt anyone was calling him one of the best young LBs in the league. ;)Seriously, I think Chad Brown is the only "name" LB who was a name when he left Pitt and continued to perform afterwards.

IMO the best way to go about this draft/offseason is this way.- Sign Jared Allen long-term- Release SurtainDraft.1st - Have to go Jake Long if he is there 2nd - Either CB or OL3rd - WR or CB/OL - whichever they dont get in the 2nd.4th - 7th - have many picks late in the draft......I would focus on CB. WR and DTFree agency priorities1. at least 1 if not 2 WRs 2. at least 1 if not 2 CBs3. At least one OL4. Sign PK Josh Brown if possible5. make one of the signings a guy who doubles as a good KR.That is my quick and dirty on what I would do.EDITED TO ADD: But don't spend in free agency like you plan on winning this season. This is not a one-year turnaround. Most KC fans fully expect another horrible season before the pieces are in place.I also did not address QB because I think no QB will be successful with what they have/had. Let Croyle start this season and and if he falters you draft a QB in rd. 1 in '09 with a better team around him who is ready to contend.

Ty Law will be attending the Celtics game at the Garden tonight.Coincidence ?
Haven't been following Law since he left NE. What's he got left in the tank?
Some time at safety ...
You beat me to it. I was wondering what the board thought about the possiblity of Law playing as a FS as opposed to CB.
Paging David Yudkin; how do the Pats feel about where Merriweather has gotten to? Is Law playing nickel a better guess?

Unless he's recently changed his tune Law has been pretty adamant in the past about staying at CB.

I think Law can still play corner in the Pats defense. In the Pats defense you dont need burners at CB. They dont usually leave them on an island. Law has always been very good in run support. I think he would fit in nicely.

I wonder if the Colts would be interested. Although he'd be more a nickel now I suspect.

If Samuel leaves, which is likely, I think Law would be a starter with NE. Would seem to be a more attractive place for him.

I agree completely. Also he would come at a fraction of the cost of Samuel.

If history repeats itself the most attractive option for Ty Law will be the team that pays him the most.

That is a given. Except in this situation, I'm not sure that wouldnt be the Patriots. Agreed that Law is not coming back to the Patriots for old times sake.

Hardy Nickerson and Earl Holmes just too name a couple.

yup u beat me to it...I think Nickerson made 5-6 Pro Bowls after leaving the Stillers...As to Vrabel, he couldn't make get in the game with the LB crew they had going at the time...

Ah yes, the "Antowaine Smith" argument. Vrabel's done alright; thanks very much.

I missed this...what happenned to pat surtain? When he was in Miami, he was arguably the second best corner in the NFL. Did his skill set go down that quickly, or was Miami's press coverage/DE combo a perfect fit?

I think it is a real testament to just how good the Steelers LB corps was back then. Vrabel goes on to become a Pro Bowl caliber LB, but couldn't crack the rotation in PIT. Glad to have him in NE, though.

He just really regressed this past season. He was getting beat by mediocre WR's, and struggled with his tackling. I don't know if letting him go now is the right choice, considering that Law was just released and nickleback Benny Sapp isn't going to be re-signed.

:lmao:I think Law would make an excellent free safety; and there is plenty of precedent for this kind of move. Troy Vincent remained productive as a safety in later years and, of course, Rod Woodson went from Hall of Fame corner to a high level safety, too.

 Basically, he should probably be gone, as I thought his play had slipped more than Law's had, but KC is so talent deprived @ CB that they pretty much HAVE to keep him one more season. The trade for him, and the new deal he got to pass the trade thru, are two of the worst decisions Carl Peterson ever made. KC gave up a 2nd rounder for him.

Surtain will be here in '08 however next year I see him getting cut. I would like to know how much cap room they have available now with the recent moves including Kennison.

Kevin Green wasn't young when he left but he played very well for Carolina.
