Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke on Syfy - starts 12-14-15 (1 Viewer)

Great book, hard to see how Sif-Eee can do it justice. The structure of the story lends itself to a mini-series but it's a thinking man's story, not a blood and guts, alien invaders blowing things up type of story.

Doesn't seem to fit that channel's M.O. for the past decade at all.

No Rashaverak in the cast lists. If they conflate him and Karellen, that will annoy, as they were very different in terms of personality.

Looking forward - already DVRed.

I wonder how many people are going to watch this thinking it is going to be like Independence Day or some such crap.

Or SyFy might just go ahead and make it that way.

Wait, they'll be no tires kicked nor fires lit?

Well, #### that ####.

About halfway through episode two (and thus the mini-series). It has been a long time since I read the original (I remember the basic plot structure, just not a lot of details), how faithful has it been so far - guessing not very.

It concludes tonight, for those that missed any of it and didn't DVR it, they are re-airing part 2 again today (even part one, started 15 minutes ago).

I enjoyed it. While it has been 30+ years since I read the book, I remember a good bit of it. Naturally they can't get everything the same, but I think they did a pretty good job.

I did like Tywin Lannister as Karellen.

Kinda fell off a cliff and suddenly it was all over. Decent I suppose. Maybe it's just because we are starving for good scifi.

They need to fire up Firefly again. New BSG series. Something.

Terrible. First episode was decent. Decent enough to have me intrigued and willing to sit through the next two episodes that got progressively worse. Wish I had those 4 hours back.

I can understand people not liking it and thinking it lost steam after the first night. It didn't turn into an action movie and a battle for survival.

The book was all about the suspense of what happens to mankind and how we deal with it while having no control over it.

For a book written in 1953 it was pretty ahead of it's time, but most of Clark's writing was.

Maybe they try Rendezvous with Rama next.

Just looked on Wiki about this:

...some snipping...

In the early 2000s, actor Morgan Freeman expressed his desire to produce a film based on Rendezvous with Rama, however the film has been stuck in "development hell" for many years. In 2003, after initial problems procuring funding, it appeared the project would go into production.[11] The film was to be produced by Freeman's production company,

Nonetheless, in 2010, Freeman stated in an interview that he was still planning to make the project but that it has been difficult to find the right script. He also stated that it should be made in 3D.[15] In January 2011, Fincher stated in an interview with MTV that he was still planning to make the film

In an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson in February 2012, Freeman indicated an interest in playing the role of Commander Norton for the film, stating that "my fantasy of commanding a starship is commanding Endeavour". Tyson then asked, "So is this a pitch to be ... that person if they ever make that movie?" to which Freeman reaffirmed, "We ARE going to make that movie." In response to a plea to "make that come out sooner rather than later", Freeman reiterated that difficulty in authoring a quality script is the primary barrier for the film, stating "... the only task you have that's really really hard in making movies, harder than getting money, is getting a script ... a good script".

That sounds awesome. Too bad the miniseries did a terrible job at it. They didn't explore how mankind deals with it, besides from the perspective of a religious nut, a farmer, a family with an alien baby, and a non wheel chair bound genius. I know they can't touch upon everyone's feelings, but I think they completely missed the boat on showing how the average person would deal with such a situation. They also completely whiffed on investigating further why the Overlords looked the way they did.

I wanted to like it. I really did.

So what exactly was the point of the whole evolution? Did they need to remove Earth for a galactic superhighway or something? Cause the girl just blows up the planet after 85 years. I've got to assume she's dead too. So that seems like a whole lot of trouble for very little payoff.

So other than the pointlessness of the story, I think my main problem was with the prophet guy. How he treats his current wife just made him unsympathetic so his terminal illness just wasn't effective. Plus, if Karellen is so conflicted about one guy, how does he deal with obliterating an entire planet?

What I remember is on Earth the adults that were left killed themselves off in a variety of ways. Of course you had suicides, but I seem to remember people basically going into daredevil mode and activities became increasingly dangerous. Nothing to really live for.

All of the kids became part of the overmind. The planet itself was just a casualty of the process.
