Childress contract extension (1 Viewer)

Brad Childress' record before the Nov 19 contract extension: 32-25 (he's now 3-3 since). Keep in mind that many felt the team had the most pure talent in the NFC last season, and they still lay an egg at home against Philly in the playoffs. And with the addition of Favre, most felt that solved the one problem the Vikings had. Expectations were huge. Why did the Vikings give him an extension? Makes no sense to tie themselves to this guy thru 2013.

They just had to look at divisional rival Chicago. Lovie Smith had a much better start, going 29-19 in his first 3 seasons (including a SB appearance) but he's given an extension and he's 22-25 since that time.

When the Vikings win, its in spite of Childress, not because of him.

Been discussed here ad nauseum in just about every Vikings game thread and any other thread having to do with the Vikings.

I'll summarize the argument/discussion up to this point.

Side 1: "The Vikings are idiots for signing Childress to an extention. He doesn't know how to use his players (usually a Peterson owner here) and tries to be too smart with his playcalling. He's an idiot that is benefiting from superior talent that is masking his ineptitude. The Vikings will rue the day they signed Childress long term."

Side 2: "You're an idiot. The Vikings are 11-2 (insert whatever their current record is here) and you're talking about replacing instead of extending the head coach?!? You clearly don't understand football."

I expect after the past couple of weeks, a bit more of side 2 will be lurking instead of posting.

As a relative newcomber to the site, I did not see those threads. Thank you for summarizing. Side 1 seems the logical and only choice.Disclosure- I do not live in the state of Minnesota nor am I a Viking fan.

Don't worry.. if the reports are true.. we only need to worry about it for one year as there won't be any "real" football in 2011.

It was a bad move then, and it is a bad move now. It's a no-brainer that an extension should have been earned through Childress proving himself as a playoff-worthy leader. Chalk it up to inexperienced ownership who were irrationally pursuaded by regular season success. More bluntly, regular season success that really had little to do with coaching. I say that because I don't consider Childress' pursuit of Favre as 'coaching.' What 'coaching' Childress has done of Favre leaves a lot to be desired. If Favre was honest that he's only audibled 10 times this entire season before being read the riot act, as was reported last night during the game, its a pretty sad indictment against Childress as a coach. Authority and this guy do not mix at all.

If I was owner of the Vikings, each and every thing I did would be predicated on getting a new stadium, and extending Childress set them back A LOT in that regard IMHO. In addition to being a questionable game day coach, Childress doesn't endear himself to fans whatsoever. I can't even remember the last time I heard a positive statement about Childress from a Viking fan, even when the team was winning regular season games. It's no secret there are plenty of established/homeless NFL coaches who might be coaxed to lead a team with this talent level if it falters once again in the playoffs. Ownership really whiffed by ruling out an opportunity to reinvigorate a fanbase even if the team blows it in the playoffs. They have hitched their wagon to a very unlikable guy, and it will get pretty ugly in Minnesota if this team flounders in the playoffs.

It's hard to disagree with this. The Vikings are quite clearly one of the most talented teams in the NFL. The head coach's job is to get the most out of his players and he just hasn't ever done that for an entire season.Over the four seasons he has spent in Minnesota he has had a good-to-great team to work with every year. Yet he doesn't have a playoff victory to his credit. From what I've seen he has been improving fairly consistently over the last few seasons, but he still has a long ways to go to be considered a quality coach. Ziggy just seems to give him the benefit of the doubt every time a controversy arises.
