Chris Carpenter to have Tommy John surgery... (1 Viewer)

Chris Carpenter will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

How's that five-year extension looking now? The Cardinals gave Carpenter a $63.5 million deal last winter, even though he was already under control through 2008. Maybe he'll come back and be something worth close to that. However, as many arm problems as he's had over the course of his career, there's just no guarantee that he'll ever again be a dominant starter. Tommy John surgery will put him out through at least the All-Star break. It's probably about 60-40 that he'll come back and make a positive impact over the final two months of 2008.

This ends the season for my team, although you can make a case it ended with the signing of Kip Wells to be the #2 starter. When does football start?

Haren, Kiko Calero, and top prospect Daric Barton

Real nice move there Jocketty. You may want to lay off the free company booze

How about Jocketty stealing Edmonds from the Angels? He didn't give up much for Rolen either. He also picked up Carpenter, Suppan, Eckstein, and Izzy as free agents. He also traded the waste of talent J.D. Drew for Wainwright and Marquis. He has done a pretty good job with the salary restraints he has to work with.

He also got Mark McGwire for Blake Stein and TJ Mathews. The Cards have been on the positive end of a lot of lopsided trades in recent times (and also not so recent: Brolio for Lou Brock).Although Steve Carlton for Rick Wise almost tips the scales permanently negative.

 The Mulder/Haren trade was obviously a bad one, but Jocketty has made plenty of great moves over the years.

The fact that Jocketty and Co thought they could rely on sophomores (Wainwright and Reyes) and retreads (Wells) to carry their pitching staff is what killed them. There was so much weight put on Carpenter's shoulders to pitch another great season that, and it was common knowledge among people in baseball that if he went down, they would be hard pressed to get to the playoffs.

Instead, ownership cried poverty despite filling the new stadium and winning a freaking World Series and this is what we're left with. Bill DeWitt is all about the $$$, and if the Cardinals were to go through a mediocre/poor stretch, I don't think he'd give a flying #### as long as people continued to fill the stands.
