Chambers' Affair And Divorce May Have Led To Release From Chargers

SportingNews 33 minutes ago

Wide receiver Chris Chambers(notes) said earlier this week that he suspected his off-field problems had more to do with his release from the San Diego Chargers than the team's desire to give Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee(notes) more touches.

Chambers' wife, Christina, told San Diego police in April that she was being harassed by Stacey Saunders, a 27-year-old with whom Chris Chambers admitted to having an affair, the San Deigo Union Tribune reports.

Chambers, 31, said Monday, “I guess it created a distraction upstairs. … They know a little too much of my life, and they used it against me.”

In early June, Chris Chambers requested a restraining order against Saunders.

“Beginning in April, Ms. Saunders became aware that our affair, now broken off, was known to my wife,” Chambers wrote. “Since then she (Saunders) has launched an incessant attack verbally on me, and now my wife, her mother and sister. All calls, text messages and e-mails are abusive, vulgar and irrational. They have begun to mention intimate details of my life such as my son, home address, and family member locations.”

According to the newspaper, a hearing was set for late June, but neither Chris Chambers nor Saunders showed up for the court date. A week later Chambers filed for divorce from his wife. They are working out terms and custody of their 2-year-old son.

“Unfortunately, this is a serious legal matter and I cannot comment at this time,” Christina Chambers wrote Tuesday in an e-mail to the Union-Tribune.

The Kansas City Chiefs claimed Chambers on Tuesday.
As bad as an affair and divorce are, other players have had these issues and still performed well on the field. So, Chris, BFD.

I doubt that Chambers is the only on the Chargers or other teams that is going through a divorce or cheating on their wives. It comes down to production. The Chargers wouldn't care if he had 20 girlfriends if he could catch the ball on Sunday. If you can't produce and make a lot of money and have equal or better players behind you you get cut. Pretty simple.

I doubt the divorce and surrounding details were one of the reasons the Chargers cut him, but they may have been a reason why Chambers wasn't able to fully focus on the job at hand.

He was overpaid and the Chargers are deep enough at receiver that they can forgo overpaying him for the rest of the season. Not a huge loss unless the injury bug starts taking out WRs.

If you're on a team's roster on opening day, your salary is guaranteed for the season. So the chargers will be paying Chambers even though they cut him. They obviously felt his performance didn't justify keeping him on the team.

Actually since the Chiefs claimed him off waivers, the Chargers are off the hook for the remiander of his salary. Had he cleared waivers the Chargers would have had to pay out the rest.

Now that he's a Chief, he should introduce the stalker chick to Mr. Larry Johnson.

when the dolphins traded him away, I said "good riddance". The guy has always been about a 50% receiver, which is not good enough. When he had that number with Miami, everyone said "it is b/c of the quarterbacks throwing to him". In the end, it was because he is not a good wr.

I could see this getting into his head a little after what happened to Steve McNair. Sounds like the girl is mentally unstable and in theory could pose a threat to him or his family. Could certainly be a distraction.

That said, it doesn't excuse the rest of his career.

Really became a no brainer for the Bolts to cut him. He's been clearly outplayed by Floyd, and Naanee deserves to be on the field more as well. Chamber's catch per target ratio is amongst the lowest in the league.

Plus the Bolts needed another middle LB with Dobbins going down last weekend, so someone had to go.

AJ comes up aces with the Chiefs claiming him, saving the Bolts ~ 2.2M. Those dollars should be ear marked for VJax's new deal.

The word on Chambers is he has all of the physical attributes but doesn't have much upstairs; meaning does not run good routes, forgets plays, doesn't make the proper adjustments.
