Chris Chambers thumb still bothering him... (1 Viewer)

Chris Chambers has reportedly been struggling with a sprained thumb. He says he's "almost healed" but has been dealing with the injury since training camp. Daunte Culpepper's inability to connect on deep passes has probably hurt Chambers' numbers more than the thumb.Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

As a dolphin fan I will say this: Any #1 WR who doesn't catch better than 50% of his targets does not deserve to be considered a #1 WR.

I thought he was slightly above 50%. Also, you need to consider the QB as well - if 50% of the throws targetted to him are uncatchable - thats not the WRs fault.

He has had 4 (or 5) different QBs now, and with all of them he has been inconsistant. Except for that burst to end the season last year, CC has been one of the most frustrating dolphin players to watch.Chris Chambers MIA 14 9 23 9 39.1 114 12.7 1

edit to add: for his career, he is at 50.25%. Again, not a #1 WR, and Certainly not elite

He is 40% this year. 3 of those (in my recollection) were poorly thrown by Daunte.

Makes sense - it takes a while for a QB & WR to develop chemistry - its all about timing, getting to know eachother and chemistry - with the revolving door of QBs Chambers has had to play with, it makes perfect sense that their (QB & WR - its not just the WR) numbers would be lower. Give Chambers a few years with the same QB and I bet those completion % numbers go way up.

I think you miss a lot in your re-collecting. Daunte has been awful, but one of thse games was the Steelers.Last year he dropped a ton too, but finished at exactly 50%.164targets 82comp. 1118 11TD's.

His career is 50%. In a very quick and informal look at #1 guys, the worst you can think of catch about 57% of the balls thrown their way.Harrison is at 65%Owens, L Coles, and Even Andre Johnson catch at 57%Rod Smith = 62%Steve Smith 64%Holt = 63%Chad Johnson = 59%Even Musim (who has had a bunch of different and bad QBs) is at 55%.Again, chambers always seems to get a pass on this. He is not a #1 guy with those hands.

Yeah, his hands sure looked horrible on that TD-catch last week. :rolleyes:Some day Chambers will have a quarterback who can hit a barn door with a football on a sunny day. Until then, I guess he just sucks.Let's see how those hands of stone look after this weekend's game.

Roll your eyes all you want. Sure he makes some great sideline catches and some that are out of this world, but the routine ones he muffs. 50% career. That says it all. Hard to dispute that.

By these numbers, Chad Johnson only catches 1 more out of 10 (10 more in 100 targets), yet hes known to have good hands, and is considered not only a #1 guy, but one of the best WRs in the game.Ive seen CJ drop quite a few over the years but its all about targets and catches, not %. Last year Chambers had 82 catches for 1100+yds and 11tds. I dont care how many targets it takes him to get those kinds of numbers, as long as he gets them.

Those are Jerry Rice's #'s in 2002, when he caught 49% of the balls thrown his way. He's considered to be the best WR ever, and those stats tell you that you can't blame it on him being old. He was still putting up solid numbers.

I really think that catch % isn't a worth while stat. I'd rather see drops calculated. Obviously Chambers doesn't have the greatest catch % in the world. But I remember things like that Thurs night game vs PIT. CPep threw that one that was almost intercepted in the endzone, another that hit Chambers in the face, but the timing was off, etc...

Someone with ESPN Insider access should take a look at these stats (because I can't). They charted drops from 2005.

I would love to see the numbers here,. because perhaps I misjudge. However, one of the reasons Chambers' finish last year was so unexpected was the fact that he started catching those balls.1st 11 games 2005: 39/91 for 498 yards and 5 TDs (.428)

Last 5 games 2005: 43/75 for 620 yards and 6 TDs (.570)

He seems to be starting out more like his first 11 this year than his last 5. However, truth be told, if he would have the .570 type of catching ability his numers would sure look better. Projecting his stats at a .57 catch rate would have been another 15 catches and another 200 yards and I am sure a few more TDs (including the game winner vs. new england in 2005 in Miami that he dropped)

Does Miami even take any shots downfield?

Im giving Chambers one more chance next week @HOU. If he doesnt produce, hes riding pine.
