Chris Harris - S - Chicago Bears (1 Viewer)

So the guy was a 6th or 7th round pick from a small college. He's put up some nice numbers over the past 4 or 5 games (with the exception of last week) while Todd Johnson has been injured.

Is Todd Johnson really the better play? It appears Harris has put up better numbers when he's played.

I'm in a 32 team dynasty contract league with IDP and I just traded away D. Bullocks for him because I'm headed to the playoffs and in this league it helps you to have playoff bound players from NFL teams ( :bag: ).

He has a 2 year contract on him but he's really cheap. Bullocks isn't a starter yet (neither is Harris) but they had similar numbers on the season.

Will Harris be more of a player for the rest of the year and what are his possibilities for next year?

Harris has been a big part (quite possibly more than Nathan Vasher's absence) in the Bears shoddy pass coverage over the past weeks. Even the local news media is banging on him. Although he's tackled very well and shown up big in the boxscore, it hasn't been because of any great talent. In the four games Harris has been the primary SS, the Bears have had an average of 55 tackle opportunities per game and have faced an average of 73 snaps a game. Even including that four game stretch, the Bears have still faced just only 63 offensive plays per game for the season. That's a significant difference. It's not all on Harris, but he's a big reason opposing quarterbacks are completing over 60% of their passes over that time span. But there's no question the increased opportunity has bloated Harris' boxscore lines. What you saw last week is likely to be what you'll see in Week 17 -- splitting time to keep Johnson sharp but fresh for the playoffs, where, if he's healthy, Johnson is likely to be the full time SS. Johnson is a free agent after this season, but Mike Brown is likely to be back. Hard to say what is likely to happen in 2007, but Harris lost the FS job to Danieal Manning early on and wasn't first in line at SS after Brown went down. His prospects in Chicago aren't particularly bright.

Greaaaaaat. :bag:

I would be surprised if the Bears do not address the strong safety position in free agency or the draft if Mike Brown is done. Harris is a good line of scrimmage safety but is subpar in coverage and tackling angles in space. He was the Bears free safety last year when teams repeatedly burned the Bears deep almost all season. Playing strong minimizes the impact of his weaknesses to a point but he isn't enough of a strength as a run stopper and big hitter to overcome those weaknesses.

As a Bears fan, I would be unsatisfied if Chris Harris or Todd Johnson was the starting strong safety next year.
