Chris Samuels retires (1 Viewer)

Redskins LT Chris Samuels will retire from football.

The third overall pick in 2000, Samuels went on to appear in six Pro Bowls in 10 years, starting 136 games. Samuels, 32, is forced to hang 'em up due to an aggravation of his spinal condition that occurred two weeks ago. The Skins have nothing that remotely resembles a long-term replacement on their current roster. Samuels never made first-team All Pro and isn't a serious Hall of Fame candidate, but is sure to make the Redskins' Ring of Honor.

many times, the player will tell his buddies he is done, but still say outloud that he will try to come back. He loses game checks with the announcement of retirement. So, I think Samuels is done, but it might not become official.

That's a guy I respect. I'm glad he's probably going to retire. The talk is that he's been experiencing numbness from the waist down since he got hurt 2 weeks ago. Stenosis isn't something to mess with.

terribly overrated
MOP, seriously? Someone posts that a guy of Samuels longevity is retiring and your contribution is to be the first one in the thread and post a two word insult to the guy? How is that adding to the discussion in ANY way? Are you enhancing anyone's knowledge of the game by saying that? Are you fostering a discussion of the news with that remark? Or were you, instead, simply getting a snarky comment in at the expense of others who probably really liked the guy and what he gave to the team?

There goes that FBG gig....

It happens all the time. Maybe he's in a bad mood?

Edit to add:

(I don't mean he does it all of the time, but alot of people do.)

Were you just expecting more from MOP than the original poster?

Links.Jason Reid, Washington Post

After learning he could become paralyzed if he continued to play football, Washington Redskins Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has told people in the organization he will sit out the remainder of the season and plans to retire. Samuels, who suffered a serious neck injury about two weeks ago against the Carolina Panthers, reached his decisions after consulting with many specialists, several of whom warned him about the possibility of no longer being able to walk if he attempted to prolong his career, league sources said. However, a source close to Samuels, 32, said he would not make a final determination on retirement until December or January -- and would withhold a public announcement until that time.

Samuels, we're told, has been experiencing numbness below the waist since injuring his neck two weeks ago.

wrong. he was an excellent player. just didn't have the benefit of a great offensive line alongside him.he will be missed. a great worker.so much for the 2nd (Arrington) and 3rd picks of the 2000 draft. thanks, Chris.
Agreed. In later years the yearly, recurring leg injuries tended to affect his game as to top pass rushers, but he was just a very good LT for a long time. Hopefully this forces the team to really invest some resources into that O-line because God knows Samuels was about the only solid piece of that line over the last couple of years.

What a player this guy was...

It's going to be a big loss to an O-line that's already struggling. Cooley can't be happy. He'll continue to block quite a bit.

 I really appreciate a lot of what you post, MOP, but with this ... one can only hope that when you retire, your career is summed up by some punk who can't hold your jockstrap when it comes to work and production (but who has a quick and acerbic tongue) making some similar self-serving comment.

Comment worked for me. With the time MOP puts in, I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that he was just keeping his perspective concise. In fact, lead me to take a look back over his career and stats objectively and try and see where MOP might have been coming from. Nice little back and forth with what the Redskins gave up to grab him initially, his 6 non-first team pro bowls, the surrounding talent, and the importance of the position he's playing for the length of time he did. Certainly more useful comment for me than Wood talking down to the guy on the board with the cringe-worthy rhetoricals versus in a Private Message.

:( Nice alias, MoP.

Hi Jason,

I had a couple of responses to your post but I sent you a PM instead. Too many vultures wanting to instigate a fight in here, look forward to hearing back from you. Don't forget, waivers run tonight at 11:00 :goodposting:

Maybe he just felt he could convey his opinion in two words instead of using more?

You're ######ed.

He has been a great player for the Redskins, but why hasn't management planned for this the past 3-4 years?? Everyone could see that Samuels has been getting old, too many holding, off side calls the past 3-4 years, IMO. They have never drafted his backup. Come on Danny Boy, wake up and get a REAL GM who will recognize when to draft players to replace aging veterans.

Cerrato's philosophy is that you don't need to spend high draft picks on OL's. You can get them later in the draft. :lmao:

He has a history of this sort of thing . . .
I'm right there with you MP. Here's a thread from a month ago where I said that he was nothing special last year. I would have rather had E.Graham, R.Grant, or J.Fargas than Portis.
We are in the extreme minority it seems.
That's why the short bus is short.
