The arrival of quarterback Brady Quinn via a trade from the Cleveland Browns has triggered the departure of backup quarterback Chris Simms, according to the Denver Post.

Simms has been released.

Per the report, Simms was due a $2.54 million base salary this year.

Simms started one game, but was ineffective and replaced by Kyle Orton despite an injury.

With the release, the Broncos are back down to three quarterbacks.

Orton is the starter, Quinn is his backup and Tom Brandstater is third-string.

Orton told the Post he welcomes Quinn's presence and has been assured by coach Josh McDaniels that he's still the starter.

"[Quinn] is a great player and I'll be happy to work with him," Orton said. "I do have total confidence that I'm the guy there. Just like every year I'm going in to try and earn my starting job. I don't think I have anything to fret."
Has there been an off-season with more movement of QBs who are not very good players than this one?

"[Quinn] is a great player and I'll be happy to work with him," Orton said. "I do have total confidence that I'm the guy there. Just like every year I'm going in to try and earn my starting job. I don't think I have anything to fret."
If Jay Cutler or Josh McDoosh were half the man Kyle Orton is, the Broncos might be more than an afterthought.

And twice the drunkard, half the beard.

I am not sure I understand this comment.Either way, is C. Simms done, or does someone else try him as a backup? I was pretty surprised to see DEN pick him up last year.

Go back to last season, if Cutler was half the man as Orton, he would have said something similar to what Orton said this off season. Consider what would be now if when the McDoosh going after Cassell fiasco Cutler would have said the following: "[QuinnCassell] is a great player and I'll be happy to work with him," OrtonCutler said. "I do have total confidence that I'm the guy there. Just like every year I'm going in to try and earn my starting job. I don't think I have anything to fret."Conversely, if McDoosh was half the man as Orton, he wouldn't have gone after a QB behind his starting QB's back, and when the news did get out, he would have made ammends and not the the situation explode out of control.

What I'm saying is if Cutler or McDoosh were men instead of whiny little beeotches, Cutler would still be a Bronco and Denver would be more than an afterthought right now.

I think Simms is done, put a fork in him.

As stated in the Quinn trade thread - this was more about Simms than Orton. People deluding themselves into thinking Quinn will be the starter are likely the same ones who thought last season that Simms would be the starter.

It's not like he knew it was his spleen, sounds like he thought it was ribs. He had the guts to go play through the pain, but if they knew it was the spleen, i don't think he goes back out there.

I think he would have. Most football players don't even know what a spleen is.

You understand McDaniels was shopping Cutler, right? If the trade had gone through, there would have been no "happy to work with him." Cutler would have been traded. You understand, too, that Jay was there in Denver working at the facility and learning that offense from McDaniels DURING THE OFFSEASON while McDaniels was trying to shop him...all without telling Cutler.

Here are some fun numbers for you McDaniels apologists...

Q: How many NFL quarterbacks age 26 or younger ever had more than 80 passing touchdowns, more than 12,000 passing yards and over a 60% completion rate over their first four NFL seasons? A: 3...Marino, Manning and Jay Cutler

Also, Jay Cutler had as many passing touchdowns in his last four games as Brady Quinn had over the last three years.

He looked good in TEN reportedly and that stirred up some erroneous hype. Plus with the Bears, there wasn't too too much to love about Orton. The Titans liked Simms in his time there as a backup and emulating the opposing QB in practice. Simms is "on his last legs" in the NFL and better find a spot where he can perform well and be appreciated. It might be Tennessee. Who knows if KC will come back and play a full season as a backup. I'm still shocked they gave Young a truckload of money(bonus). Anyhow, I don't see much else for Simms than to beg Fisher to get another chance
