Chromebook -- Highly recommend (1 Viewer)

Any further thoughts on the HP stream vs Chromebook vs other?
I've never owned a Chromebook so I can't compare. I will say the HP Stream I bought in January because I needed Windows to operate a work app has exceeded my expectations. The storage is minimal but I keep most stuff in the cloud anyways. The free use of Word and Excel for a year has come in handy. The screen is not as good as my old Samsung laptop but it is fine for streaming movies and tv shows when I am on the road. For $200 I think it was a great deal.

Only complaint is when I have more than 10 tabs open at once while looking at porn it will crash. For browsing normal websites i can usually have 10-20 tabs going at once with no problem.

When this thing dies or my Office subscription runs out I will probably by a Chromebook just to try one out.
That's a lot of porn at one time. Maybe cut it back to 3 or 4 tabs at one time. I promise all the porn will still be there next time.

Anyone got any new thoughts on these? Looking to get one in the next couple weeks for the wife. Looking for a good screen, 13 inch, decent processor.

Anyone have an opinion on this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VPJY7NQ/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0PQ2DQ2ES47J54VS74GK&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2253014322&pf_rd_i=desktop

One thing I noticed was it weighs five pounds, quite a bit more than others. Wonder why that is. Seems like it might matter.
that can't be right.
Found the same one (I think) on another site, and for weight, it said, "starting at 3.78 pounds."

Well, it also claims that it has 0gb RAM, 0gb storage, and the processor is 0MHz...... so I might take all those numbers with a grain of salt.

This may not matter to you... but I gave three chromebooks to my kids so they could run Linux on it and play Minecraft on them.

From what I remember, I had to get an Intel based Chromebook in order to get Linux running on them. The nVidia CPU based Chromebooks can't run Linux.

Asus just released the Chromebit

It basically turns your TV screen into a fully operational Chromebook, assuming you have bluetooth keyboard/mouse. Pretty cool, and could make watching porn on the big screen much more convenient.

Suggestions for a chromebook for 10 year old girl? Mainly web browsing (online video games, learning/education portals, etc and watching youtube type videos) and some light word processing? She also enjoys making and shooting videos (what pre-teen girl doesn't) and I'd like to introduce her to some simple editing, like iMovie type software.

We are an all apple house, but I can't justify the cost of a macbook for her right now. She does have an iPod that if we could get it to connect to this would be great, but otherwise not a complete need, I can keep it on my machine.

Thoughts? Prob look to stay under $500, would love to be in the under $300 range. But want something she won't max out on soon. She has my old macbook that is just too old to upgrade now.

I am soo not a windows or programming type person, so I couldn't fix it if it needed any tech knowledge.

The only requirement you have that I'd be concerned about on a Chromebook is the video editing. Here is a site that explains the issues and limitations of trying to do that on a Chromebook: http://reasontouse.com/computer/video-editor-for-chromebook-google-needs-to-listen/

Most Chromebooks are around $300 unless you skimp on RAM. Spending as much as $500 won't make it have a longer useful life. It will just give it things like a prettier screen.

hmmmm so no real good video editing? bummer, that might kill it. She keeps asking me to help her make videos and I want to send her to apple camp next summer (where they make and edit their own vids) grrrr thanks

As a great "full computer" alternative to a Chromebook, Windows 10 is pretty great, and this ASUS Zenbook I just got for like $600 is awesome. Really nice, fit and finish like a macbook, Windows 10 is great, battery life and screen are solid. Great all around machine.

If you're an all-Apple house and you're sending her to Apple Camp then you should probably bite the bullet and get something Apple for her.

Used laptop?

FWIW My daughter is ten and I want to see the videos before "the world" does. I'm learning to look but not make her uncomfy. She's learning to use some tact. It's been a good experience. I don't need to see the whole video. Kid shooting camera at dolls....scroll scroll.

Also sometimes she sings terribly and....ya know ya gotta discuss the bad performances too in life. This is great because I can make some wise comment or she criticizes herself then delete and it's gone. No lingering feelings to deal with.

I have a nice Alienware PC. They have laptops and tablets and all sorts of stuff. They are not allowed on dad's computer. However, with this I let her. No viruses, not even really going online. No risk really. Only thing is enormous files sizes and saving the same 3 GB video ten times. She has a jump drive and was surprisingly quick to teach her to copy file to jump drive. She then puts it on her laptop.

Anyhow, that's how we do it here, hope this helps

Finally pulled the trigger on this. There's one of these on my doorstop today, waiting for me to get home. core i5, 32GB SSD, 4GB ram.
Sounds like a solid plan to leave a computer on your doorstep
When I report back that it was stolen by a roving gang of suburban junkies, you will have the last laugh.

I got the Toshiba 2 a few weeks ago and it has been great for most of my laptop needs. The screen is solid and the Skull Candy speakers are the best I've ever heard on a laptop.

The only gripes I have are that Chrome OS doesn't recognize certain types of files (like tif) and it is unable to run Java applications. The no Java thing really irks me because I have a work app that runs on Java and is needed almost daily. If I am at home no big deal, I just use my desktop, but when I am travelling it is a big inconvenience not to be able to get #### done in a timely manner.

Anybody have experience loading a Linux OS onto a Chromebook? Apparently this would allow me to run Java apps but I have no experience rooting/jailbreaking devices and am concerned I would #### up the machine.

I got the $167 Acer Chromebook and I like it a lot.

What prevented me from getting a Chromebook for a long time is that I really need to run the full version (not the web version) of Excel and Word.

The remote desktop app built into the Chrome browser makes it easy. I should have gotten one of these originally instead of getting a bigger, heavier, clunkier, costlier, Windows laptop instead.

No idea.

You might try the Chrome OS subreddit though. I'm sure those geeks could help you out.

Or, you could quit your job and move back East so you don't have to worry about running Java apps.

just got this tonight

I've been using a PC for the past couple of days for the first time in a long time (for more than a print server, that is). Wife spilled something on her Chromebook, so I gave her mine. I had forgotten what a truly awful experience this is. Sluggish as hell. Update notifications popping up everywhere. I really can't believe people use these damn things when they don't absolutely have to.

3rd Chromebook on the way, and cant' get here soon enough. Another ASUS 13".

I have an hp Chromebook 14 that has gotten pretty heavy use over the past 1 3/4 years.  For the most part, it still works great except the space bar does not always register when it it is depressed.  It can be pretty annoying, and it significantly slows down and already slow typist.  After typing a sentence, I typically have to go back and add in several spaces that were missed.  Anyway, can something like this be fixed or do I just need to cast it aside and start fresh?

Might drop it by a pc repair place and see if you hit them on a slow day they may give you a good deal.

But at these prices it may just be worth it to treat yourself to an upgrade. Not a huge Acer evangelist, but the new 14", 14-hour battery life w/aluminim chassis and 4gb of RAM looks like a winner to me. I know a very small % of people need a full blown PC laptop but for the vast, vast majority of people out there this is more than enough @~$300....

Am in the market for one of these. That Acer Chromebook 14 sounds like a good one. Traded in a couple clunker laptops at Best Buy and have $150 in cards burning a hole in my pocket.

Very nice.

Love my little Acer...great battery life and does most of what I need it to do (especially while my son is on our normal computer playing minecraft or he and/or my daughter doing school work).  Was nice at our fantasy baseball auction watching everyone else have to plug in after a little bit while I used up all of like 10% of my battery...if that.

Wish there was a way for them to play minecraft on one...when we travel I usually just take the Chromebook.  There are apparently possible hacks to get it to work, tried one of them last trip and had no success.  Will probably end up with another PC laptop soon anyway as my son has been wanting one to have for minecraft and school and stuff and there are plenty of cheap options fo rthat.

just bought one of these. Asus Chromebook 2. 13" screen ought to be big enough 2.16ghz, 4 GB and 16 SSD. $160 refurb'ed. i wanted something with a decent battery and this is supposed to last 10 hrs. i don't need it to do much beyond light computing, surfing, and such. anyone use one of these to replace their office laptop?

the 2013 edition of the Pixel is $399 today.  (2560x1700, Touchscreen, Core i5, 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD)    These were ~1600$ at launch.

IN!
I've had my eye on that thing for a couple of years.  I've never heard of Expansys, looked up some reviews and it looks like there may be some customer service concerns.

https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.expansys.com

Yeah, I saw the same in the discussion on Reddit.   Oh well, this is why we use credit cards, right?   Use a card with customer service you trust.  If it sucks, let them deal with it.

MLB.tv ChromeOS users may want to look into a different solution after MLB changes it default media player on May 1.

Okay, so my kids (1st and 3rd grade) are using Chromebooks @ school now.  Wife thinks they should get their own for Christmas, and I'm fine with that, they can be locked down pretty tightly, and anything that engages them in learning is a pro in my book.

Any recommendations for which Chromebook is suitable?  My thought is cheapest possible since they're kids, they don't need extra RAM etc.  Any advice appreciated.

Samsung CB 3 $149 - 4GB RAM and this:

Durable, Family Friendly Design

Built with durability in mind, the Samsung Chromebook 3 can be enjoyed by the whole family. A spill-resistant keyboard means the kids can use it to watch movies during snack time and you can use it to look up recipes while cooking in the kitchen. An HDMI output makes it easy to connect the Chromebook 3 to your HDTV, allowing everyone to watch movies and videos on the big screen

Just bought the Asus model two weeks ago and love it.  It does what I need it to do at a fantastic price.  Couldn't be happier.

any BF deals on these?

mine is several years old now and slowing down.
I just bought the Acer 14 on Amazon for $229 (from $299). The bigger 15 was $235 but I wanted something a little smaller/lighter. Not BF-specific but seemed like a good price.

That was how I felt about my Asus until it died dead after less than 2 years of very casual use :(

I have been advocating the brand for a few years, but boy, my success rate with them is very low at this point.
