Chromebook -- Highly recommend (1 Viewer)

Bought my first chromebook, the Samsung Chromebook Pro. Typing on it now. First impressions is everything seems a bit fuzzy. Any tips on possibly sharpening things up a bit. Could just be my eyes tonight but maybe a setting somewhere? I messed around with the resolution and left it at the recommended 1200x800. Coming from my Tab S 8.4 and Pixel XL, maybe this screen PPI is just that much worse. I don't know. Might need to go back. Will give it a few days i guess. Cool little toy though. I also wanted it to read comics. The screen size is perfect for full size comics. Again though, a little fuzzy which is annoying.

That was how I felt about my Asus until it died dead after less than 2 years of very casual use :(

I have been advocating the brand for a few years, but boy, my success rate with them is very low at this point.
I've mostly used Asus Chromebooks (versions of C300) and love them, but I've also bought 4 of them and a few have croaked. My wife is notoriously hard on computers, so that's likely been the reason for most failures, and the one's that I've used primarily have lasted a couple of years or so.

Since Asus is the only brand I've really ever used regularly, I really can't speak the longevity of other brands though. I did just get a Samsung Chromebook 3 a while back, and don't like it very much after a couple months of use. It's not as snappy as the Asus' and I don't like the keyboard nearly as much.

Hopefully, I won't need to be buying another CB for a while, but when I do, I have no idea which model I'd get. Love Asus, but agree that I've seen reason enough to question the long-term durability.

Just got a Pixelbook last Friday and took it on its first trip.  So far, easily the best computer I've ever owned.  For reference, this is my fourth Chromebook and I still have PC's.

Why so awesome? In order of importance:

It is super thin and light. Maybe 3/8 inch thick and the size of a piece of paper.  Weighs 2.4 pounds.

The keyboard is awesome.  Great tactile feel chiclet keys and they're backlit.

The display is crisp, bright, and beautiful.

I haven't been able to bog it down yet and I typically have 20+ tabs open.

Very small USB C charger...only a touch bigger than a phone charger.

It also has a touchscreen and functions in tablet or tent mode and runs Android apps.

It is a little pricey but I caught it on sale for around $700.  At that price it is worth every penny.

I've been curious about one of these for a long while.  You're tempting me to take the plunge.

I currently use a Mac laptop.  My phone is an android.   Would going from a MAC to Pixelbook be a drastic change?    I only use the laptop for msoffice and internet.   I have files also on it.

I looked at these and considered them, but ultimately bought a used Dell XPS 13 touchscreen because I didn't care about the android app feature or tent mode.  It's easily the best computer I've ever owned, roughly 3 pounds, and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend $700-1000 for this kind of computer.  Paid $300 on ebay.

How is the battery life? I always worry about the quality of the battery when I purchase used.

One of the great things about the chromebooks I have used is they have 6-9 hours of battery life brand new because the "OS" is so light.

Pretty spectacular.  I've run it for five hours straight on "max performance" and had 20-25% battery life left despite touchscreen capability.

That is excellent. Usually the small/light units have terrible battery life in my experience. I'll be looking for one of those over the holidays in case they are discounted. Like I say, I don't really trust eBay for proprietary batteries but I don't mind refurbished if it's directly from the manufacturer. Thanks for the info.

Sure.  I took it on a trip, kept it on full performance, and had only 70% starting a 3-hour plane ride.  Watched tv shows over wifi the entire time and had 25% left when I landed.

It does seem to have some kind of problem with the headphone jack drivers - I bought a usb headphone jack for $7 and that works perfectly.

Kids are going to be loaned Lenovo 300e Chromebooks for the school year. Has anyone used these? Any thoughts? What have you been using for cases.
Backpack? Maybe just one of those neoprene sleeves from Amazon if you are in a part of the country where rain/snow can be an issue. Even then I spray all my backpacks with that water-proofing spray so that wouldn't be a huge issue but the neoprene sleeves are extremely cheap/light adding moisture/scratch protection.

I am pretty much a wireless headphone guy now anyway(humble brag) so that certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I'm not sure that the boys take their packs around with them, so I might just get hardshell cases for them, more for scratches than for protection. Their backpacks will be the protection. For my daughter (6th Grade) I got a case like a briefcase so she can use it for school supplies too. And it's purple! ;)

Oh, then you need this - there's an issue with one version of the xps13 and its bluetooth driver - it's incredibly easy to fix, but you have to download the driver manually, I think.  It's not a problem on my version, but the 9365 has a problem.

http://www.tomsguide.com/faq/id-3306034/fix-bluetooth-problems-dell-xps.html

(keep in mind if you buy one, there's a touchscreen version and a non-touchscreen version of the xps13.  The touchscreen is awesome.)

Anyone have a good recommendation for free video editing software for a Chromebook? I tried to play with a couple but the interface was clunky and not intuitive. I experimented with a could just for my phone, and they were easy and intuitive. But I don't want to have to do it on my phone. Any recommendations?

Run the phone app you like as an app on a chromebook that supports apps?

#### just got real.  My work now allows me to connect remotely via Citrix on a Chromebook (something that didn't seem to work a year or couple years ago).

So I picked up a ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip 12.5-inch Touchscreen Convertible Chromebook, for $475.  So so nice.  It's amazing what you can get in terms of a chromebook these days for the money.  Such nice quality, and does everything I ever do with a computer.  Beautiful screen, nice keyboard, quick, speakers aren't terrible.  Really for 99.9% of my computer use, a Chromebook does the job and then some.

Still a big fan

my son only uses a computer to play this online game Roblox.....he's 8. Prob will need a real computer within 2 years, but figure a chrome book will be a good option to get him off our computers. Does the CB's have enough horsepower to run that game (if anyone knows it)?

Yes

I just got a free one and it just seems like an android tablet with an attached keyboard.

My issues:

1. Unable to set up a wireless printer.  It does not see it and I cannot connect to it.  If I plug it in via USB, all works fine.

2. Limited onboard memory, have to save docs to the cloud (I know that is the intended purpose, but I'd like to store things locally).

I love chromebooks. I would never buy a chromebook going into the experience knowing I(or my son) wanted to play games on it.

You need a powerdrill and are trying to buy a hammer because it's cheaper. That's not to say you can't make do with a hammer for some jobs, or to say that hammers are useless..... but hammers are good for hammering. Same thing goes for people that need to do heavy duty video editing and trying to use a Chromebook.

I thought you said it had USB? How many docs could you have that a 256GB thumb drive won't hold them all? I see people say this all the time and I have no idea what they are talking about.

I could do that but since I'd "prefer" more onboard storage so I didnt have to do that.  As I stated in my reply, my issue was LIMITED ONBOARD MEMORY.  Again, as I stated, itr was a free chromebook so beggers cant be choosy.

If you would like to bicker, count me out.  I was just stating my issues with MY Chromebook.

I hear yea...and ironic example b/c my daughter wanted a computer for video editing a few years ago and I was in this same thread when I found out that only have cloud storage and slower specs. So we went and got her a mac book which cost a ####-ton more.

I was hoping I could get away with a CB this time again b/c the game he plays is online only. So its more the browser doing the work. But I get your analogy and agree with it.

Seems like a great choice. I've been using the 15.6" Acer with the hd screen since my last post here 3+ years ago. Still a big fan, but the cable from the keyboard to the monitor disconnects, probably from me tossing it on my bed too many times, so I started doing some research a couple days ago. I loved the big screen at first but over time started wanting a smaller (more durable) unit. I came close to getting the Pixelbook when it was $799, but even the sale price seemed a bit much for what these are supposed to be. Then yesterday I read an article (sry cannot find it atm for some reason) picking the Flip you bought over it based on how damn close it comes for half the price. So, I just ordered the $399 factory rerfurb from Amazon. Can't wait to get it.

Well, I won't bicker. I will simply point out the fact that the myth that if you use a chromebook you have to use cloud storage for you data is just that. A myth.

I thought that you were saying that you have to store your docs to the cloud. If I misunderstood you, I apologize.

No worries.  Life is Good!

I have an MacAIr which has a 125GB hard drive and I have to use USB drives and it drives me nuts too.  Its just my Chromebook only has 10GB storage but again it was free so I cant complain.

I wish I could get my printer set up on it but it just isnt in the cards.  Granted, its a HP3050 model (pretty old).  I prolly will buy a newer model once the print cartirdges need replacement so I can get the latest and greatest wirelkess connectivity (for phones, ipads, chromebooks etc).

I am still trying to get used to the Chromebook and its limitations but Its's great for surfing the net and basic tasks which is really all I need.

This is a hassle. Mine connected to my home printer with no effort until something happened. Now I can't figure out how to reconnect. Never been able to connect to the printers in our office. Real hit or miss and a pita.

5 years in and the battery has died. Have to keep plugged in. Can replace for $30 or might just get a new one
2.5 years in and battery died. Cord required to operate and it randomly loses connection and dies. Probably looking at a Samsung Pro or Plus to replace it.

May have missed this in the thread, but the children's account thing with Google and age restrictions and the family connect app is a total flaming turd.  I can't believe Google can't make this better.

What's the recommendation for a printer for the Chromebook?

I Googled and found a few but the  HP Envy 4520 Wireless All-in-One Photo Printer with Mobile Printing stood out since it is an All-in-One.  I'm sure there are newer "versions".

Anyone have a better receommendation, TIA!

How's the refurb working out? Was considering this one myself.

As far as I could tell it was brand new just in a damaged box. It's perfect, best CrBk yet, but currently at college with my kid. It might be hers now.

Exactly the one I have. Works great. Also nice in that I can easily print there wirelessly from my phone or iPad too.

Anything new I should know about? Gonna buy one tomorrow most likely.

Wife has a 3 yesar old Acer that I like just fine. I think I want touchscreen and backlit keys

Anything new I should know about? Gonna buy one tomorrow most likely.
I am as big a fan of chromebooks as anyone you'll meet(especially if you travel a great deal) but I would say that those "2-in-1" light laptops have fallen to much more reasonable price points from the $1000-$1500 price tag than accompanied them at launch several years ago. That isn't to say a full blown Windows 2-in-1 is always better than a chromebook but the prices are close enough now that you should at least compare the two. That's relatively new imo.

For instance this $500 Lenovo seems like a very good deal....

https://slickdeals.net/f/12760117-lenovo-flex-6-14-2-in-1-laptop-ryzen-5-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-win-10-500-free-shipping?src=rcm_category

... and an even better deal if you are comparing it to one of the higher end chromebooks. If you do a great deal of typing Lenovo is generally thought to have the best keyboards on the market. For almost a decade I've "tried" to move away from windows machines but the combination of Lightroom/Photoshop/Steam games library has meant I have always had at least one Windows computer.

Another NEW development would be the cheap Chinese laptops that are getting better and better.... assuming that you have the good sense to realize what you are actually DOING on a computer/mobile device is what keeps you secure much more so than the brand name on the device. Almost all of them are made in China anyway so it's always been laughable that people thought this brand of device is riddled with security concerns but the other brand(assembled just down the street in the same city) is somehow shielded from any possible security concerns.... because, you know, the Chinese government leaves that building alone. That's how they roll. Anyway, here is an example of a 2-in-1 that is $316 and is probably 90% as nice as the Lenovo(but likely a much worse keyboard)....

https://www.banggood.com/VOYO-V-Book-V3-Pro-Tablet-Notebook-2-In-1-Win10-13_3-Inch-Intel-8128GB-Fingerprint-Sensor-Laptop-p-1191483.html?utm_campaign=Kimo30&utm_content=Isabela&p=QV2409786796201409DB&cur_warehouse=CN

... if you've never ordered with Banggood they are pretty reputable and I have always had good luck using them. It does take longer to receive, however. And obviously it's much tougher to return or have serviced if you have problems. Maybe I'm just lucky but I research a great deal before buying and I almost never get devices that don't work as advertised.

Just to be fair I would also point out that chromebooks are still the best value for most people and this is a pretty solid deal even if you aren't a Costco member and have to pay the extra 5% on top of the $200....

https://slickdeals.net/f/12773542-asus-c423na-14-4gb-ram-32gb-ssd-chromebook-laptop-bonus-sleeve-mouse-costco-com-199-99-fs?src=catpagev2

So in summary the only things NEW that you should be aware of is there are more and better options than ever before even at price points that in the past would only allow you to purchase a chromebook. Where the trade-offs create the best value for you depend on how you typically use the device. In the past I was pretty strongly in the chromebook camp for travel but if I bought something new today I'd have to compare some pro's and con's of the 2-in-1's.

I have one of the recent Asus chromebooke and it fits the bill for what you want. Great device. It’s my main work laptop at home.

currently thinking about looking for a chromebook.

@BoltBacker nice write up. Thanks! I may take the plunge on that cheaper Chinese one.

I was only leaning towards chromebooks because of the cost. My wife has one that is just fine, but I do want the option to run some CAD software at home and not just on my work computer, so the windows machine has some appeal.
