Chromebook -- Highly recommend (3 Viewers)

@KiddLattimer linked this deal in the BlackFirday/CyberMonday thread for Walmart (include free 2 day shipping). It's $299 now, but apparently the specs are great for the same $300 price. How do they compare with the Samsung?
I haven't used either personally but off the specs I'd take the i3 over the Samsung unless you specifically need the pen.

If you take care of it or just keep it in the box you could return it if something better pops up on BF/CM

Also - I think I saw the Samsung at my local Best Buy (unless its a different model)... you might be able to mess with it in store before buying

The one Kidd linked is better spec wise but it's not a 2 in 1 well technically.  I was specifically looking for that (the fold of tablet like use). I mean his has a touchscreen and all

I'd like a 2-in-1 as well. And as much as I'd like to think I would sketch with the pen, I know the folding feature would just be for games :bag: . So I put the Acer on my wish list instead.

Missed the 2 in 1 part... what about this one?  It doesn't say C330 but I believe it is one... one of the Android Central tech reviewers said she uses the C330 as her daily driver and rarely has any issues.

Any recent feedback - suggestions about Chromebooks?

My 8 year old ipad is dying and I'm contemplating a chromebook vs. getting a new ipad.  Only have a work laptop at the moment, so I did a new personal machine and I think I'm leaning towards a chromebook.

UPDATE: I need a Chromebook for my son kind of quick like. He's only in 2nd grade so it doesn't need to be super, but it does need to support Android apps. His old iPad does not support the apps his school is using for distance learning and it's difficult for his sister to share her Chromebook as she is doing school work at the same time as him.

So... have any FBGs seen any moderately priced (cheap, but but out of support) Chromebooks online recently? Local stores seem to be sold out of the cheap ones.

Price?

I needed a few for my kids so grabbed a few 2-1 Acer Spin 15.6 inch screen.  So far so good working on google classroom etc.  easy set up with our internet and wireless printer.  They were like $300is at Best Buy.

anyone else running in to memory related crashes?

if i have one tab open, then open another to say listen to music, when i flip back to the original tab.. the music stops and the original page has to reload from scratch.

if i load reddit, or facebook after a few minutes the tab crashes.

did a hard reset the other day and it seemed to resolve the issue for a few days, but today it's back. all that i'm running is a single browser with 2 tabs open and Adblock Plus. that's it. i've cleared cache & cookies entirely, deleted the few downloaded files i had stored and that's the extent of what i know to do to clean up memory.

any suggestions to prevent this continually happening? it's really, really annoying.

to anyone who had this problem, apparently Chrome 79 and Adblock Plus don't play well together.  i had to upgrade Chrome, then uninstall and re-install Adblock Plus for my Chromebook to go back to functioning normally again.

I am waiting on this Lenovo to be released  https://youtu.be/xLKZTvDc-b4

p.s. the name rolls right off the tongue, right?
I picked up the Lenovo Duet Chromebook this week... it's a slick little device. I've been primarily using it in tablet mode and it is working surprisingly well.  Nice screen, decent speakers, Android apps work well... no real complaints.

It's  neat in Chromebook mode too, the keyboard is small, but it is quick to get used to. I can't imagine I'll be using it as a productivity tool very often, but I'm confident it will be fine when i have to.

P.S.  typed this response on it in tablet mode

After having several chromebooks as my primary travel computer, I upgraded to a Pixelbook about 18 months ago.  It has been by far the best computer I have ever owned. So, when my Windows desktop pissed me off for the umpteenth time last week with update nagging followed by an unauthorized shutdown to update and general laggardly behavior I decided to go full Chrome. I got in my new Chromebox earlier this week and I am in absolute love.  I got the Asus with the Core i7 and it is just amazing.  Lightning fast, even for video editing tasks, and everything "just works" with no nagging. I wish I had done this a lot sooner.

Glad I wondered into this thread.  I'm in the market for a new laptop but have been wanting to get away from windows and that Cortana whore.  Pixelbook, huh....

I've got the OG Pixelbook and love it, came from a Macbook Air.  Got my kids a Pixelbook Go and they are equally great.  $584 for the base model or $764 with i5, 8gb mem and 128 ssd with a Best Buy account, highly recommended.

looking to replace my ASUS Chromebook C202 Laptop that's about 3 years old and just slowing down.  Main use is general internetting, google docs and the such and usage when i travel.  Looking to spend around $300.  Any suggestions?

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet (64GB) is $305 @ Walmart right now,

On a separate topic, I have taken the plunge and I am 100% done with Windows on all my machines.  Replaced my last Windows desktop with an Asus Chromebox. Love it. Just crushes everything I throw at it including video editing.

what app are you using for the video editing?

Looking to not spend much more than 200 bucks or so. Have a 1st and 3rd grader, who like the rest of the country, are starting school remotely. Last year they used a combo of school issued ipad and/or some other ####ty tablets we had lying around. Don't need anything special, for they are just doing google classroom and watching videos and such. Imagine when they really need a good computer in a few years, whatever we buy now is obsolete anyway - thus wanting to go the inexpensive route.

Should I go refurbished? Used? Want a 2 in 1 if possible at that price range.

I got this for my mom a few weeks ago. Easy enough that shes only had to ask me for tech help once... so far.

Best Buy was also doing special deals for students, such as discounts and headphone giveaways. Not sure if those still apply.

Oh, and just a quick tip: For Zoom, install the Chrome browser extension instead of downloading the Zoom app. It works much better/easier that way.

Just picked up a Duet.

Has a detachable keyboard.  It's a glorified chromebook tablet, Was well worth the 250 bucks

Anyone have one of the sub $100 ones?

Looking at buying a couple cheap ones for our 8 and 10 year old for christmas. Mostly just school work and some youtube videos and maybe some minecraft.

Like this thing is under 100 bucks, but does it suck? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo-Chromebook-11-6-Intel-Celeron-N2840-4GB-RAM-16GB-SSD-Chrome-OS-Black-80MG0001US/43939509

Mind you, my wife has had a 200 dollar chromebook for like 6 years now and that thing is still chugging along just fine, albeit slowly

Or Walmart has tons of cheap refurbished ones. Any of these catch anyone's eyes? So many damn choices https://www.walmart.com/browse/shop-laptops-by-type/google-chromebooks/3944_3951_1089430_1230091_1103213?sort=price_low

I've never used a Lenovo chromebook, but I'd guess it's certainly worth trying for $70. Especially for kids.

I've got an old Haier that I think was around $100 a few years ago. I don't really ever use it because of other options, but it doesn't completely suck.

I'm not a Lenovo fan. I bought a cheap one that didn't last. Does anyone here have a Lenovo they like?

You mean Chromebooks or any Lenovo? My teen's daily driver (Yoga C940) has been great. In fact, we like it so much I was considering taking a shot on a Lenovo tablet (Android). Zero experience with any Chromebooks, though.

Never had a Lenovo chromebook, but you'll have to tear my old refurbished T420 Thinkpad out of my cold dead hands. Love that thing.

I got a couple year old refurbished one in 2014 for about $250. Slapped an SSD and some more RAM in it. It's 10 years old now running like a top. Love that old school Thinkpad keyboard and pencil eraser mouse too.

wevideo.com

That doesn't seem to be a very fair comparison for "Video Editing" power, which is generally client-side application and done at  720p or (usually) higher resolution.

I've not used that site but it would seem to be you upload the video (or bring it into the browswer), then edit using their web UX, then their computers edit and compile the video, sending you the finished product?

Not to say the videos aren't cool/good. Just saying it's prob not a good test of a system.

Looking to get 3 chromebooks.

Two super cheap ones for the two kids (like 100 bucks if possible) and a slightly more expensive one for the wife.

Anyone got some good recommendations?

Few I have been looking at

HP 11.6 $119

Lenovo 11.6 $110

Acer 11.6 $192
I got my dad the exact Lenovo a couple of months ago. He uses it for 2 hours a day. email, reading theathletic and youtube. No problems. The customer ratings were accurate.

Bought my MIL this one last week for only $79 while visiting for Thanksgiving. Her previous Chromebook that was 9 years old didn't have the hardware to update the OS anymore.

HP 11.6" Chromebook

It's the most basic of basic Chromebooks but it works for her web surfing and e-mail needs. And the bonus is the fact that I can remote desktop into it when she can't figure something out.

No touchscreen. Not for $79 apparently. I'm going to be replacing my wife's Chromebook but she is going to require a touchscreen so I'll be following along on this thread for the cheapest version with the touchscreen. Only the best for my wife! :-)

My MIL uses a mouse anyway so the touchscreen wasn't a necessity for her.

$99 Lenovo Flex 3 with touchscreen at Best Buy

Clark Howard's clarkdeals site is a always a good spot to bird dog cheap chromebooks (or most anything)

Just noticed this comment...fair statement but I really don't care how the baby gets made. The end result is less painful than other options...at least for me.

Figured I’d wonder into this thread. I need a cheap laptop on my budget. I’ll post what I posted in need a new laptop thread for here and was suggested to check this thread. Looking for something cheap I can browse, stream my Spotify and I might be doing some video podcasting with a friend but nothing high tech just more of “can you see and hear me”
