Cinci play-calling (1 Viewer)

How does Rudi only get 12 carries??

No wonder they are losing close games.

They were only down in the 4th quarter.

Their defense allowed 29 points. Did you even watch the game or are you just a pissed off Rudi owner looking at the box score?

Rudi gets 20 carries they win games no problem.I watched the game.2nd a 2...throw. INC  3rd and 2...throw...INC

Actually I watched the game and their playcalling was bizarre. Johnson looked awesome in the 1st quarter. As a matter of fact he had I believe 35 yds rushing on their 1st TD drive on 6 carries. Then they just stopped running for no reason.

I was about to say the same thing. It seems like they are pressing to get the passing game going and then they abandon the run. :wall:

Exactly...Hopefully they'll realize this and keep giving him the ball. He's the type of RB who can be very valuable late in the game with his size and power. After having all that success early on, dont know why you do that

I had the same conversation yesterday with another Bengals fan. They abandon the run way too quick. Are they trying to keep all the WRs happy when they should just ram the ball down another team's throat until they stop it? Perry is back so lightening the load on Rudi should not be an issue.

I'm glad somebody started this. I meant to ask what the deal was since I was not able to see the game.

It looked like he had a solid first QTR and then nothing.

I actually was looking to see if he got hurt.

Glad all 3 WR's are doing well. Too bad they don't realize they need to run the ball to win.

I have been saying this for years now, their play calling is killing me every week when i watch them on offense and defense.

On offense we abandon the run way too early especially when we are up by a TD or so and Rudi is playing well. Otherwise when Rudi is not running well and the o-line is struggling making holes for him, we continue to run the ball and he gets 19 for 47 against the steelers, but yet he has 36 yards after the first drive on 6 carries and he only gets the ball 6 more times after that.

Then on defense, the Bengals can not blitz worth a darn, cant stop the run very well, hardly ever puts pressure on the qb with a 4 man set, and Tory James cant defend a pass if his life depended on it.

Only thing is....this has to be Palmer's fault sort of.....he calls a lot of audibles at the line.

From another thread today:

Rudi had 5 carries for 32 yards and a TD plus 2 receptions for 8 yards on Cincy's opening drive. On their second drive, up 7-6, Cincy passed twice on consecutive 1st & 10 plays, ran Rudi on 2nd & 5, passed on 3rd & 3, and punted. On their third drive, which began with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter and Cincy still up 7-6, Rudi was replaced by Perry. They scored in 8 plays to go up 14-3, with Perry getting 2 carries for 11 yards and 1 catch for 11 yards. Can't argue with success, I guess.Their fourth drive, up 14-13, started with 1:54 remaining in the second quarter, so Watson was in for the two minute drill. Watson carried once for 3 yards, then Palmer threw 9 passes and they kicked a FG. Not giving Rudi carries in this situation is understandable. On their 5th drive to open the second half up 17-13, Rudi got one carry, on 2nd & 10. Palmer threw 2 incompletions and Cincy punted. On their 6th drive, down 20-17, Rudi had 5 carries for 13 yards on a 10 play drive. Cincy kicked a FG to tie the game at 20.On their 7th drive, down 26-20, Rudi had no touches. To be fair, on 1st & 10, Housh lost 7 yards on an end around, so it is understandable that Rudi had no carries. Cincy went 3 and out.Their 8th drive started with 7:42 left and Cincy down 29-20. Palmer dropped back to pass 6 times in a row, Cincy gained a total of 15 yards, and punted. Kind of understandable in that they needed two scores... though I think they may have gone one dimensional a bit early.Cincy's 9th "drive" was one play: the 55 yard TD pass to Henry that cut the lead to 29-27 with 3:41 remaining. Clearly understandable that Rudi didn't touch the ball. Then, they didn't get the ball back until only 19 seconds remained.---I believe Cincy had 28 first downs. Rudi ran 6 times for 34 yards on 1st down. Great success... so why only 6 1st down carries? All in all, they were successful on their other 1st downs (although that success was inflated somewhat by the 55 yard TD)... but in cases where they were not successful, a couple of important second half drives stalled.
I also wonder about pacifying not only the WRs, but also Palmer. I'm not saying he is a complainer or prima donna, but I could see him pushing to throw more. Bottom line is that he threw 36 passes and Rudi ran 12 times. While game situations dictated that to some degree, it also seems that Cincy is content to be a passing team, despite having the best smashmouth running back in the league today.

Eventually, they'll realize that having a high-powered offense doesn't necessarily mean the QB throws for 30 TDs. Throwing the football is a helluva lot easier when defenses have to respect the running game, and as soon as their play-calling takes advantage of that, the Bengals' offense will be scary-good. Those WRs are sick, and if the safety has to come up to support the run defense, Palmer will have lots of open guys downfield to choose from.

Of course, if Palmer lets the running game do more of the work and his numbers drop off, he'll be labeled a "game-manager." ;)

But, they won't be anything more than the Colts have been in recent years until they get a defense that can at least contain a good offense.

:ptts:

Seriously, 2 Angry Guys talked this on the Monday drive into work - they went through every single possession where the Bengals had the ball and only found like 1 or 2 instances where Rudi could/should have gotten the ball and he didn't.

It wasn't the playcalling that lost the game for the Bengals.

There are two main reasons I could see:

1. Palmer making bad throws... especially on 3rd down. He is not nearly as accurate as he was last year.

2. Defense unable to stop Vick on 3rd and long.
