CJ4.24 and a question about this board (1 Viewer)

I don't understand the recent disappointment with CJ. Had one of the best fantasy performances of all time vs. HOU, but people want to "throw it out", which to me from many discussions here seems like a tactic that will inevitably reduce any star performer to average. Dynamic players like Johnson are rated above more pedestrian middle rounders because they can explode on any given week and win your matchup - but it doesn't mean they are going to average out to a robotic stat line every single game. CJ had 57 yds against a tough PIT d Wk 1, and 97 and 83 against the Jets and Jaguars wk 3 and 4 - IND was his first really down game. I'm concerned about the team around him, but am pretty happy to have him as a No.1 in my 14 team league.

My question is about the level of expectations on this board for players. Why are people spending time and energy calling Fitzgerald a bust, Moss a bust, basically any highly drafted player who does not have an insane stat line after 5 weeks? Why whine and moan about MSW not being able to play one week when he's going to be a good value going forward? Fantasy football already is such a temporary, almost ridiculous thing - everyone loves LT one year, couldn't care less about him now that he appears done, and it's the same for every former player - Priest, Shaun Alexander - no one cares once they're not producing a line.

I finished as the regular season point leader in my league of high school friends for five years in a row by endlessly researching on forums like this one, and used to get so caught up in every little twist and turn of the schedule and every regular season win. It took me til last year to finally realize that the playoff weeks are the only ones that matter, so I built for Wks 14-16, made the playoffs as a lower-ranked team by finishing in the top half of my league, and then watched my team blow up each week til I won the championship. I thought it was an achievement, but here we are this season, and no one really cares or remembers at all - and why would it be any other way? Fantasy is a great diversion and a decent way to stay in touch with old friends, but it's strange to see people who appear pour so much energy into stat lines that won't matter in 5 weeks in the fantasy season, let alone in real life.

I don't understand the point of this thread. Are you saying people are underrating Chris Johnson, or are you bemoaning the fact that people forget about studs quickly, or are you telling us how great you are at fantasy football, or are you trying to discuss team-building philosophies, or are you trying to romanticize the role that FF plays as a social connector, or are you criticizing people for making heavy investments of emotion and time into weekly stat lines (after admitting that that's why you're so great at FF in the first place)? It seems like you're all over the map, here.

I'd love to discuss any one of those points, but I honestly don't know where to start, so I figured I'd ask for clarification.

I think Jose wanted to get some things off his chest about so many people being such short term thinkers and expecting every-week results, and some other things, and seeing the complaints about Chris Johnson's week 5 was the trigger that made him want to speak out.

I'm good with that.

Well, if that's the case...Of course people are short-term thinkers in fantasy football. You kind of have to be. If Miles Austin has a huge game, you better grab him right away, because if you wait a second week for him to demonstrate he can do it more than once, he's already on someone else's roster. If Steve Slaton has a bad game to start the season, you better sell him fast, because if you wait until he's had 2 more bad games his value is through the floor. The key to succeeding in fantasy football is anticipating trends rather than waiting for them to become abundantly obvious (because if it's obvious to you, it's obvious to everyone else, too). The problem I have with most short-term thinkers isn't the "what have you done for me lately" mentality... it's the complete lack of a "why have you done it for me lately" mentality. They look strictly at outcomes with no regard for processes. As a result, a bad game by Chris Johnson might appear the same as a bad game by Steve Slaton because the outcome was the same, and because they don't dig deep enough to notice details like how Johnson's bad game was a result of his team getting behind early, or just dumb luck, while Slaton's bad game was a result of a loss of explosiveness due to the added weight in the offseason.I don't care what a player has done recently, I only care why he's done it, because the why holds a lot more predictive power going forward than the what.

I thought maybe it was a bible verse - kinda like Phil 4:13?? :goodposting:

Chris Johnson has played 5 games this year. 4 have been bad.Whats the problem?
How has 4 been bad? He had 105 total yds in one game and 94 in another to go along with that huge performane against Houston. Getting into the endzone is a crapshoot for any back.

6461094Gimmie a break. You and I both know that his owners didnt sign up for those kinds of #s when they picked him 1st.

This is true but how happy are owners with Moss, Brady, MJD, Slaton, Forte, D Willy and other under-performing players to date. We all know that a good portion of drafting is a crap shoot. There are risers and fallers every year. I am not ready to give up on Johnson or Jones_Drew because they have not lived up to expectations. I am disappointed however and one cannot ignore long term trends; five games is not a long term trend.

People thought that Chris Johnson was better than Reggie Bush.

He's not, though it took 4 years for people to realize that Bush isn't that great

We arent talking about those guys, but Im sure there are threads discussing peoples disappointment in them. Not saying you should give up on him and its hard to even take him out of your lineup because of potential to have a game like week 2, but Im just stating the fact that Johnson has been a disappointment this year.
