Clash of Clans (Official thread) (3 Viewers)

I know there's no real consensus on how the matching works, but to me at least, it seems it heavily weighs the amount of gold spent on defenses. That's why XBows and Infernos are worth so much (as are those upgrades). As you get those high level upgrades on the regular defenses, your ranking also increases.

I got about 15 million in upgrades that should pop by the time our next war starts. Will be interesting if I'm still ranked as a max TH8.

Walls don't mean ####. Troop levels seem to have a minimal impact as well.

It would be great if there was a spreadsheet where you could put in all your defensive upgrades and get a total amount of costs to be able to compare it to the war ranking.
Walls mean *something*. Before Culdeus' recent hero upgrading spree walls were basically the only difference between our bases and he was ranked a spot higher.
Walls mean ****. I have the best walls in the clan and haven't moved in ranking despite adding lavas up the ###.
no one is making you win 600 attacks every season

It can't be just straight gold. Igbomb vaulted 8-10 spots when his L2 xbow completed and was way below the level of them on other towers.

What it might be is it takes an aggregate of how much the LAST upgrade was on all your towers. i.e. the L7 tower only costs as much as what it cost to do a L7 tower, and so on. Therefore adding an Xbow, as it's a new and expensive tower, counts alot as it starts right away at 5 Mil, and the jump from a L6 to L7 wiz tower is not nearly as large.

I do think they perhaps double the value of xbows and infernos. It just seems to weigh heavier, somehow.
There probably is some sort of multiplier. I just don't think it's as significant as people think.

I am surprised someone hasn't come up with a website that allowed you to input all your info to spit out a ranking of your account based on total value.

Costs roughly 80 million to max TH8 towers form TH7

Only costs an additional 78 million to max TH9 towers from TH8

TH10 costs an eyepopping 180 million to max from a max TH9

Xbows have to have a multiplier. There's just no other explanation.

This is interesting, I didn't realize just how expensive TH8 was. Most of this comes from the teslas, giant bombs, and archer tower levels. You get so few additional levels in TH9 that cumulative costs don't add up there.

So are we still going on the premise that newly minted TH9 should avoid making the xbows, thus raising their war matching power until they get their offense up to speed?

Trying to build a new TH9 base and there's very few decent ones without using xbows as a key component to defense. Thinking the football field may be the choice here (moving heros inside) unless I can hit build on xbows.
Build the xbows. Don't upgrade them.

This is a controversial opinion, not a hard and fast rule.

Upgrade xbows after all Anti-air and Wizards are maxed and everything else is at least at TH8 max level, and all camps and barracks are maxed (well, at least one max dark)
been meaning to ask about this, good plan. build xbows, then every defense to TH8 level, then air/wiz/mortars to max (i'm here now), then xbows or the AT and canons as loot and builders become available.

eta: are teslas heavy on war rating? need to slot that in, suggest before or after xbows upgrade to L2?
I don't think teslas are special for war rank, they are worth doing just because they can tend to give gowoppy some big issues and you can use them to troll your ez lure spot.
Regardless of what they do to the war ranking I'm going to have a builder steady on AD & Tesla's when I start the TH9 upgrades. They just take too freaking long to start at the end of the build cycle. I'll have skulls in a few days so the heavy elixir upgrades that I was targeting are done and am concentrating on DE upgrades. When I make that switch I'm going to start the TH9 upgrades as well.

Came across this war recap from the two top clans in the world. The Chinese clan has Lavaloonian down to a science. Granted lvl 40 heroes make this strategy work.
There are 3 good takeaways from watching videos like this and the Lava Loonian attacks by VodkaCoc in the OP.

The first is the use of Golems and heroes to take out the AQ and CC troops. I have been dropping a Golem and a Jump spell as close as I can to the AQ. After the AQ (and hopefully the CC has been pulled) has locked in on the Golem then I drop my BK, a max Valk, and a wiz to kill the AQ. Sometimes you can take out an AD at the same time which is a best case scenario.

Another thing these videos show is using a more surgical approach to deploying the loons after the hounds have been targeted by the defenses. I used to drop the loons in a line first and then drop the hounds but would end up losing way too many loons before the hound could tank. The goal when dropping the loons is to keep them moving forward towards the AD and avoid traveling sideways to take out additional defenses.

Lastly and this goes without saying but max heroes are ####ing beasts.

All very good points. The golem + heroes is also a great strategy used for hogging, so mastering that type of deployment has multiple uses.

Cool - thx for sharing.

I've also seen succesfull Quatro attacks that only use the Heros to get 3rd star or cleanup at the very end.

Our last opponent didn't fill CC - made my Lavaloonion attack much much easier. Still trying to figure out best and most economical way of dispatching CC

Fbgs is rolling once again. Once we get Bangkok back we will be set.

Pretty good there I'm going to try that. Not sure why they all use the same base

Also noticed they don't use heal

If I spent all the time it takes to get all electric walls and I was still getting three starred, I'd throw my phone across the room and never play again. Yikes.

In case anybody missed the war discussion in Honda today, here is the lesson to be learned. (This is CoC101 for most is us, but Honda is the learning clan.)

If an opponent has high level bad bases (exposed TH, forgets to switch joke base for war, under developed) - ie; a honeypot, we still need to wipe it out. We can treat it like a lower level base and have an appropriate member 3 star it. But saving it for later does us no good and isn't a good habit to practice. If we're involved in a close war, we need the easy bases eliminated so we can take our best shots at difficult stars higher up, or help by scouting for our big guns. If we're winning handily, everyone can honeypot freely. But declaring unstarred pots off limits makes no sense and will hurt us in larger and tighter wars.

Moral of the story: If an opponent is spotting us X number of stars with bad bases... Take Them.

Poke my holes.

Honest question, why would it hurt? Not suggesting never to take it, but why not use early/mid attacks on other bases when an underdeveloped base is a sure thing for any th8+...or th7 with drags?

Honeypots are a different discussion, IMO. Obviously open once shenanigans are declared. This base was a honeypot and underdeveloped th9.

It could potentially hurt if we need to reassess tactics in a tight war down the stretch, whether it be scouting or swinging high for stars. Having 3+ unclaimed stars sitting out there does us no good. But in a blowout like today, it doesn't matter.

I strongly believe that a learning clan like Honda should practice sound war organization and strategy until everyone has gained plenty of experience. They aren't all going to be easy wars like this one. We're all still learning new things about this game, and hopefully our leaders are open to learning as well.

Basically, I'm preaching fundamentals before we get cute about who not to attack.

Question.

My brother, who is beginning to settle in nicely at the TH7 dragon rush stage in wars, can't always play due to his hours. I wouldn't mind playing for him at times, both to ensure maximum war participation but also because there's not always a lot for me to do now as a late TH9. He lives in MA. I live in Australia.

I'm wondering if I can sync his game on to like a random iPod touch or old iPhone we have around the house, and play his account when he's not. Do I just have to sign into the app store with his Apple account and download CoC? Any reason this would be a problem from that point of view? I don't want to get his account locked or something.

I think the playing from two different continents would likely raise red flags to the Supercell people.

I'd say B but the lvl4 stuff might drag it down. Seems the obvious answer to me so it's got to be wrong.

I'm going A. Assuming B is a base that has ignored upgrading bombs and traps given the level the non exciting stuff is at which gives A the edge.
I forgot about the bombs. I'll check and add them. Both bases have been attacked. Hold on.

ETA: bomb information added

If someone wanted to put together a full clan's worth of these I'd be happy to run a regression to get an estimate of the weightings Supercell is using for each item.

Basically what was done above, plus the village ranking.

Except that for mixed-level walls I'd need to have a good estimate of the proportion at each level -- and everything would need to be converted to numeric values (no "Skull" balloons or walls, etc).

My recommendation for upgrade path for any new TH8 or any TH8 trying to decide what to upgrade after L3 drags is go hogs up to L4.

After the 4th mortar was added it made max TH8 GoWiPes useless against max TH8a and above. But L4 Hogs along with Max Heal spells should still be able to take out max TH8s and maybe some TH9s without an AQ and L2 XBows.

Also, work on getting that BK up to L10.

Yeah, I lean that way too.

The fact they added the mortar without any more walls made bases more congested. Better for hogs and worse for golem led raids. The skeleton traps are an issue, but less of one at th8.

I think, and I may be off here, is you have a case where you have:

Last completed gold spend is higher on A, but cumulative completed gold spend is higher on B.

I don't know if the clan castle factors, I've never made a habit of looking at that. Shuke has a L5 CC and still ranks below toast, so

post-mortem

My hogging of my +5 was a disaster. I actually was watching his CC off and on fill up and he went from 0 to 20 inside of an hour so I assumed dragon and misc. other crap. Actually I went in there with the idea that I was 100% for sure he was packing that. Really bad idea.

I tried to do the method where I trip the CC and take out a few towers that would give my kill squad some issues while they dealt with the drag. Except there wasn't a drag, it was 30 archers which was about the only thing I wasn't ready for. Basically anything other than 30 archers and I was golden there.

Got lucky to get 2 stars, but should have started the lure with a giant and then used hogs to take out the edge towers. Really, really dumb and cocky rookie mistake. Also shows the risks of scouting other people's cc fills. Was an EZ 3 star if I just got the CC all the way out.

2nd attack

I rushed a lavaloon to try and get my queen asleep. I thought it was a cake 2 and maybe a 3. CC suckout went fine, but hounds died too soon to central Air to protect loons. Only ended up with 1. Execution wasn't great, but thought that would have been a brute force 2 and maybe a 3 if the hounds lived. I tried it with 1 heal 3 rage and had to do over again would have done 2 heal 2 rage and kept the hounds alive a bit longer. :ptts:

Both attacks had queen(13) no king. Next 2 wars will have king(18) no queen.

Yes, it is a puzzler, isn't it?

Answer:

A is ranked higher by one spot. XBows are not the be-all end-all.
the archer and canons I believe make a big difference
how can you distinguish based on this though? L2 Xbow guy has worse towers in every other area. If anything this says that to makeup for upgrading xbows you have to be a level down on basically every other tower on your board. That's a pretty high price.

air and wiz also. xbow is only so valuable its targeting 1 unit at a time.
