Classic Cars: 1966-1977 Ford Bronco, 70's Jeep CJ5/7, muscle cars (1 Viewer)

Talk to me about these. Anybody own one? I saw one on the road in my town a couple of years ago and have lusted after one ever since. Some of the restorations of these are awesome. For instance:

There are countless other examples out there if you hunt.

This seems like it would be such a blast as a toy to keep in the garage and just bring out on the nice weekends in the Spring/Summer/Fall, for local cruising or a run to the beach. It's totally impractical, and with the family expanding to 5, we couldn't even all fit in it. But for me making a run out somewhere, smoking a cigar in the open air, taking the wife down to the beach on date night, or taking one of my girls out for a spin, this would be such a blast.

Anybody own one or know anything about them? Cars are usually awful and stupid depreciating assets, but for something this old, and with the limited mileage I will put on it, and the fact that I like to tinker and will take good care of it and want to do some "upgrades," I bet it won't lose much value, and might even gain value. So it doesn't feel like an awful "investment" in that sense (though I'm not thinking of it as an investment, it's a toy, and no matter what I'll have to at least pay insurance, even if it's very low for a classic car and very limited mileage).

Anyone have a classic car in the garage and enjoying it? I remember BB saying he picked up a 70's muscle car, and that's always been an interest of mine too, but right now I'm jonesing for these. Maybe that will be the next one, one day.

TIA

If you get an old K5 Blazer you can fit the whole fam. Not as cool, admittedly, but still a blast. Buddy of mine had one in HS and it was a blast.

I had one for a while, but went to college and sold it. Idiot. If I did it again though I'd go with a Scout.

Man you find really bad cars to get expensively obsessive over. If you're going to blow that much on car, don't you want a nice one?
What's a nice one? Out of curiosity.
Agree, what a POS for $30k.

Just a few off the bat:

Mid 60's style Lincoln Continental with suicide doors

Late 70's Vette

Mid 60's Mustang

90's Acura NSX

60's GTO

60's Camaro

70 Challenger or Chevelle

I can go on forever in comparison to that hideous POS you picked out which I doubt (or at least hope) you have no intention on buying.

Some nice choices. LOL at the NSX though. Oof.

I always wanted one of these:

Are you gonna do what they say can't be done?

I'm with u Oats, those old Ford Broncos are gorgeous. That last one in the list is especially gorgeous. I'll probably never get one as its so impractical, but if I were to splurge on a effing around ride, that might be it. I have zero desire to own a sports car from any age.

I just heard something interesting a few weeks ago. The production of the Bronco stopped exclusively because of the negative relation to the OJ Simpson chase/story.

The Bronco is no more because of OJ. I had never realized that.

So OJ killed 2 people and an entire model line of vehicle... at least he was good in The Naked Gun.

I tried very hard not to say "OJ killed the Ford Bronco".

They are cool. Relatively speaking vs. a muscle car, you may get more "practical" use out of it, especially on the island. You could get a pass for it for beach cruising, things like that.

Lol at all of the preemptive caveats, knowing this place would likely skewer the OP over the impractical side. Go for it man, live life. If you do, I'd lean towards getting one that's running perfectly, foundational stuff all in order. etc. No mechanical issues = fun when you want it.

You get it.

I don't dislike the sports cars. The 60's and 70's muscle cars are pretty sweet. But I'm not going to be racing anywhere, and for my fun summer toy vehicle I want some high ride height and open air. In doing some research the past couple days, the late 70s Jeep CJ5 and CJ7 also look pretty sweet.

I have to do some more research here...

Yeah, I knew you were also a sports car guy. I'm not a car guy in general. But those broncos and yes, the cj line are sweet. I'd also throw a done up Land Rover defender into the mix. Totally agree too that if you're going to have a fun car, it needs to be convertible.

Classic Bronco

CJ5

CJ7

Land Rover Defender

International Scout

I owned an 82 CJ7 limited edition that I swapped a 360 in. Was a money pit and I would have died with that much horsepower, but I miss it everyday.

The CJ5 & Cj7 has a much narrower wheelbase than today's jeeps so be careful in turns etc. Something to think about, but it didn't worry me.

Defenders are gorgeous but cost a nice chunk.

Look at the Scouts.

Bottom line no matter how nice the paint looks check underneath for rust.

I have a '79 CJ7. It is about the most impractical thing on the road, but I love it. That thing is bullet proof. Even my 17 year old son can't tear it up, and he thinks it is submersible.

Exactly what I want to hear. This sounds awesome.

My dad drove a Bronco, that had a snorkel attached, when I was little and lived in Denver. Man, we took that thing everywhere. Just about my greatest memories are when I was young and my dad would grab my brother and I and we'd all hop in the bronco for the weekend and go camping / looking for beaver ponds to fish in.

Those trucks are absolute beasts.

I used to have a 66 bronco. Great truck - you can take the top off for the summer and or just have the soft top all the time. Super easy to work on with tons of aftermarket parts or just hit a junkyard. Also an extremely capable offroad vehicle with very little upgrading. Mine was even a "Three on the tree" before i changed out to a different transmission for 4x4 use.

ETA - Some of these prices are just stupid. Find one in the 4-10K range and put a few bucks into paint, redoing the interior and making sure all the mechanical is sound. As long as the motor and tranny are good the really are easy to work on. Even then, a stock 302 and tranny are dirt cheap. 30K for rig is way too much.

I would gladly take a restored box bronco over any of those things apart from possibly a mid 60s stang... and even then, I'd probably go with the bronco.

yep... bring a magnet and check everywhere. Frankly you should have any older vehicle checked out thoroughly for body/mechanical issues before buying... but a magnet is a nice quick check for bondo/subpar rust repairs.

I had one for a while, but went to college and sold it. Idiot. If I did it again though I'd go with a Scout.
If you buy one better buy a second one - parts are impossible to find.
:goodposting:

My pop drove a Scout as I was growing up, so I am pretty partial to them. That said... I'd cross it off this list due to O not really being the mechanic type.

Given all the options here... IMO you should be going for something more modern/reliable that still captures that nostalgia youre going for. 2004-2006 Jeep TJ Wrangler is the play.

Can I get a TJ with a chrome grill and have it look like a CJ7?

Had a Scout, it was a beast.

Sure you can!

Link to purchase

(FYI: Chrome grills and bumpers are the Ed Hardy accessories of the jeep world)

To be fair, his original car thread was targeting a late 70's Vette IIRC

Bone stock '69 FJ40 here. 3 on the tree, hydraulic brakes, most uncomfortable seats ever, top speed around 50. Keep trying to tell myself I should get something more practical, but so far no can do.

I told the wife I thought I was going to sell it a while ago, she was like "Yeah you are! "
