Cleveland Browns (10 Viewers)

I'm not going to defend the coaching because I have no basis on which to argue, and I will admit such. I will not say it was good or bad because "I know it when I see it." The majority of the coaching takes place off camera, so I can't even "see it".
Look closely... 0-5, 4-17
How much of that is due to coaching? Why do you think so? At how many positions would you say the Browns have superior talent over the Giants?
Instead of asking so many questions I really wish you would post more of your opinions and reasons why. I won't speak for others, but I at least have gone into some pretty good detail about the strengths and weaknesses of this team and why I don't think they can be successful as is. A team is made up of many different components, most fluid, effecting others, and by themselves are just not quantifiable. What do you like about this team/organization? what don't you? why? why do you think we continue to lose every week? why do you think we will get better?

They have as much talent as several teams in the league. Certainly as talented as more than 1 of the last 11 opponents. Yet all have been losses.0-5, 4-17

I can understand the frustration of being a Browns but this is the first time in almost 20 years that I've viewed the Browns as anything but a joke.

:goodposting: The offense is putting points on the board. That's encouraging.I'm enjoying the games, and they're playing watchable football.Let's face it. If we haven't stopped watching this team yet, we're not going to stop now. I say let the season play out & see if these young guys start to put something together. Does anyone really think that blowing up the whole organization yet again is the answer? I don't.

Fair enough.I am a forever Clevelander and a Browns fan. I have watched them from my youth (around 1966 or so) and have seen all sorts of people come and go. I want most to see them become an elite franchise which wins championships often and competes most seasons. This requires top talent being put on the field by top talent in the front office. Acquiring that playing talent is a process that can't be accomplished overnight. The best organizations, the perpetual winners, don't overspend on free agents and are willing to let people go when their price tags exceed their production. I am hopeful that the Browns are moving along that timeline. Their offensive productivity is up and their defense has played better than expected (when Joe Haden is in there). Those who bemoan their losing streak seem to forget how forgettable they were last year. You have to walk before you can run. Where are they weak, why do they lose? They are clearly short in the defensive backfield. Skrine has good speed, but doesn't tackle well. He's a nice nickel back. The team is young and will make mistakes for that reason. Stuff like finishing your routes at wr, or continuing to block the backside on kick returns, happens instinctually for veterans but not for rookies. They have very little depth, and it shows. Who else at RB? Who else at DB? Who else at MLB? God help us if Joe Thomas goes down, the drop off would be precipitous! How / why do we get better? By adding depth and filling holes on the roster, and by playing / practicing through rookie mistakes. How do you know when a coach is good? When he gets a bad team competitive against the elite. Did I see that? No, but they don't look like a joke anymore. Inasmuch as I've waited 45 years, I'm willing to take the modest improvements and find out where they lead before I start over yet again.

daveR GB your optimism! I don't share it and don't think Shurmur sees the end of the season but GB the optimism
:goodposting: I only hope I can be anywhere close to that optimistic sometime over the next year, it was a painful 2010 rooting for Michigan to lose but it's been well worth it. I'm not there yet with Cleveland, and I really don't want to get there - but admittedly I'm close. I think this next game either pushes me over the edge or brings a smile to my face, not seeing any middle ground.

Honestly, I'm beginning to think no one gets Cowher, ever.Fans won't like it, but we're going the unproven route with coach and GM. I'd be stunned if we don't. What proven coach would want to come here? Retreads withstanding anyway.

Yeah, but what team replaces their coach when they're winning? The head coaching jobs are nearly always the bottom-of-the-standings teams. So, assuming W-L record is not a factor, what would be? Talent? Ownership? FO?

Dysfunctional ones. Factors for hiring front office staff is probably even more difficult than assembling a cohesive team on the field. Seems to be one of three routes to a top job in the NFL - former player, nepitism, or work your ### off. You're probably only going to get one shot at running a show, so whatever the path you need some good references and to blow team brass away in the interview with your plan.

I have a fair amount of optimism and I think the team (not the coach) is getting wrongly bashed by the local media. This Shurmur saga is about to spin out of control, if it hasn't already, and that is the major reason for the overall bashing imo. These need to be separated. It might be best to cut him loose as soon as the ownership changes over even though Haslem has essentially said the opposite. I'm gonna blow my lid the next time I hear it being questioned if this is the lowest point since 1999. How are people even thinking this?

:goodposting: Last season was a fair comparison to the 99 product, this one isn't. I think their justification for piling on is directly tied to the won-loss record, they're sensationalizig it for the sake of ratings. I mean, this product is still lousy, but it's a watchable one unlike last year. A change needs to be made because none of these guys are getting the job done, but comparing this team to the 99 one is just plain stupid.

Sooo... apparently Pat Shurmur is calling and emailing reporters and cussing them out: http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2012/10/nfl-news-pat-shurmur-calling-and-emailing-critical-reporters/

Really high character guy here. Thick skinned to boot. A+ hire Holmgren
Must be a subscriber to the Phil Savage book to dealing with criticism, what's the next step in that process Phil?Shaw was on Kiley and Boom's talking about it this morning, hilariously embarrassing stuff.

Cleveland Browns counting on young receivers Josh Gordon, Greg Little to catch on

Published: Saturday, October 06, 2012, 8:09 PM Updated: Sunday, October 07, 2012, 8:44 AM

By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer

Excerpt:

1. We’ve been told Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon had a great week of practice, and I assume that’s true. It’s also an indication Gordon has not always had great practices. That shouldn’t be a surprise, because the Browns drafted a 21-year-old who flunked drug tests at two schools. He didn’t play in 2011 because he was asked to leave Baylor and transferred to Utah, where he had to sit out a year.

2. This is not about burying Gordon. The 6-3, 225-pounder has the size and physical gifts to become a good NFL receiver. But keep in mind he had one full college season — 2010 — when he caught 42 passes from Robert Griffin III at Baylor. Marijuana use then led to failed drug tests and the transfer to Utah.

3. Gordon was on Utah’s scout team in 2011, meaning he could practice but not play. He also flunked a drug test there, although coaches told the Browns that Gordon was not a problem. They liked his attitude. The Browns made him a second-round pick in the supplemental draft, meaning they gave up their second-rounder in 2013 for a guy who had 42 college catches.

4. Despite just one year of on- the-field college football, Gordon received a four-year deal from the Browns, including a $2.3 million signing bonus. All this at age 21. In some ways, Gordon didn’t pay for some of his poor decisions in college. So the Browns are teaching him not only what it takes to be an effective NFL receiver, but the work ethic, self-discipline and attention to detail demanded to be a good pro.

5. In the first four games, Gordon played 55 percent of the snaps. He caught only seven passes, and seemed to fade into the background. He’s learning it is not easy to get open, that his pure physical gifts don’t automatically turn into success on NFL Sundays. It takes running precise routes, reading defenders, playing smart football.

6. That said, when Gordon has a week of practice like this, the coaches begin to think he could break out soon — perhaps even today against the Giants. He has that ability, and he also has pretty good hands.

7. Like most athletes in their early 20s who become instant millionaires, Greg Little and Gordon have to fight a sense of entitlement. That has led to some interesting meetings with coaches. They are being schooled in the "Facts of NFL Life."

8. The coaches didn’t say this, but one of the reasons Joshua Cribbs was set to have a bigger role at receiver in Baltimore was to let Gordon and Little know nothing is promised. Production is the bottom line. Cribbs caught two passes, but had to leave the game 10 minutes into the first quarter because of a head injury. He is healthy and could play a significant role against the Giants.

9.

Little was the Browns’ second-round pick in 2011. It came after he sat out a year because he took money from an agent. To be fair, if every NFL player who was paid by an agent while in college had to leave the field, you probably would not have enough guys to play on Sundays. But after missing a season, Little signed a four-year, $3.3 million deal with the Browns. He received a $920,000 signing bonus and became an immediate starter. All of that at age 22.

10. Little led the Browns with 61 catches, but also with 12 drops last season. This year, it’s 11 catches. ESPN has him with three drops, Profootballfocus.com has him with the same number of drops I do — five.

11. The coaches have been talking to Little about the need to concentrate. They say he has been working hard, but a big part of being a good receiver is to not be distracted when the ball is in the air. Catch it first, then run. Don’t look at the defender. Little things.

12.

Like many young receivers, Little watched star receivers and their antics after the catch. Soon, he was posing. That’s fine if you’re performing. No one would care if Little Tweeted self-absorbed pictures of himself or imitated Usain Bolt after catching passes — if he were catching lots of passes for big yardage. But when he’s not, he going to be criticized — something coaches have been telling him.

13. The NFL is an unforgiving, bottom-line league. Playing time is precious, and it’s the coaches’ biggest weapon. That’s why the hamstring injuries to Mohamed Massaquoi and Travis Benjamin are so damaging. If they are healthy, they play and the message to the other younger receivers is you must improve. But now, the Browns will have only four healthy receivers today — Jordan Norwood, Cribbs, Gordon and Little. Having the right veteran receiver to set an example and apply some peer pressure might have helped the situation, but the Browns decided to go with their young guys and develop them.

ABOUT THE BROWNS . . .

1. Some fans want the Browns to hand the ball to Trent Richardson 20 to 25 times per game. There’s a problem with that. Defenses are stacking the line against the run, knowing the Browns have a rookie quarterback and unreliable receivers. So think "touches" rather than "carries" when it comes to the Browns’ running back. The team likes Richardson’s pass-catching ability. He had four receptions for an average of 14.3 yards in the loss at Baltimore. He has caught 14 passes the past three games.

2. The Browns want to find a way to get Richardson in the open field, and they believe some screen passes and short throws can do that. No one is saying this, but common sense is that Richardson had knee surgery Aug.9. He was on the field for the opener Sept.9. Does it really make sense to run the guy into the line 20 or more times when he’s still building up strength in the knee?

3. The coaches have been happy with Brandon Weeden’s progress. In the first four games, the Browns have played four teams who now have a combined 11-5 record. Weeden was horrible in the 17-16 loss to the Eagles. In his past three games, he has three touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s completing 59 percent of his passes, averaging 293 yards passing per game. He’s doing it for a team that leads the NFL in drops.

4. Linebacker James-Michael Johnson is expected to play today, but mostly on special teams. The rookie is finally healthy, and he was poised to start before injuring an oblique muscle in the final preseason game. The coaches have been impressed with rookie Craig Robertson. In another month, it would not be a surprise to see Johnson, Robertson and D’Qwell Jackson playing most of the snaps at linebacker. The two rookies bring needed speed,

5. I love how Ahtyba Rubin put a "Don’t be a pig, take care of your area" note on the chair of every player in the dressing room. The defensive lineman is one of the most respected players on the team, and you can sense how much it means to him to wear an orange helmet and do things the right way.

You're probably right about Cowher, not sure he even wants to coach again. That said, if I'm Haslam I do whatever it takes to get him - at the end of the season of course when I can dangle the #1 pick in front of him.

I was just catching up with the Browns game vs. the Giants. Watched the 1st half.

I am amazed by Richardson. He is so strong. His stiff arm is so powerful, I see him block for himself and then cut off the punch. Not many RB can do this. He is very strong. The defenders really get jolted. I like how the blocking is opening up more with sweeps and tosses. For this half the offensive line has done a good job of getting to the outside.

The play action bomb to Gordon was a very nice throw. I thought the screen to Chris Ogbonnaya was a really nice play also. The defense was gassed from Richardson at this point. It was a good call at that time and a big play.

Maybe I am being to hard on the coaching staff. I liked the execution on offense for this half. I realize Cleveland needs to throw some times to back the defense up some, but I still think some safer throws mixed in with the play action and more running plays, perhaps with Chris Ogbonnaya? Or Brandon Jackson. Try to improve the TOP and not ask Weeden to do so much. Of course this is difficult when the team does not seem to have a solid hands WR right now they can rely on to move the chains. So it's Richardson or Bomb. They need to do more misdirection and use all those keys on Richardson against the defense sometimes.

Watching the rest of the game, Jordan Norwood made some tough catches. It looks like he may be getting an expanded role as the possession guy if he can keep catching the ball the way he has this game.

The Giants took advantage of D'Qwell Jackson being injured with their blocking scheme and Eli had some good run audibles. Anyone know if Jackson will be able to play next week? As the defense seemed a lot worse without him on the field.

How likely do you guys think it is that Phil Taylor will be healthy enough to play week 7-8 coming off the PUP list?

Nothing concerning the Browns but Uncle Reezo is guest hosting Rome today, pretty cool.

And wth is Roger Goodell doing? What a mess

With Norwood looking to now be on the shelf, are the Browns ultimately down to 3 wide receivers (Little, Gordon, Cribbs) for this weekend's game against Cincy?

There's always Josh Cooper on the Practice Squad. He would do well with Weeden and he has better hands than Little. As least what we've seen in Pre-season. I would give him a chance. Couldn't hurt.

I do not think Norwood is ruled out for next game, that has not been determined as yet but he did not practice today. I thought he had a good game and I saw him make some touch catches, and most importantly I did not see him drop anything catchable. Would be a shame if he misses time now. I did notice the Browns added WR Rod Winsor to their practice squad, dropping a LB for him. So perhaps the WRs are in worse shape than the LB right now.

The transcript of coach Pat Shurmur's Wednesday morning press conference.

Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur Press Conference 10-10-12

(Opening statement)- “Trent Richardson will be the fourth captain this week and another little piece of business, our rookie quarterback turns 29 on Sunday. That was a joke. We’re looking forward to getting the preparation going for the Bengals. Our first walk-through was good and their attention was good and we’re looking forward to getting them on the practice field. As you move through the process of correcting the mistakes of losses and wins, now we get to actually get to go on the field and get ready for the next team and I think all 32 teams do that unless you’re involved in a bye. We’re excited to get the preparation going and get after the Bengals.”

(On if D’Qwell Jackson will be at practice today)- “We’ll see. He was in the building and at all the meetings today.”

(On if Scott Fujita will practice today)- “Yeah, he’s out there.”

(On if he knows if Scott Fujita plans to appeal his suspension)- “You’ll have to ask him what he plans to do because this is a league issue between him and the league. I haven’t been informed anything more than what the official report was yesterday and we’re proceeding as though he’ll be ready to play this week.”

(On if Jordan Norwood will be available this week)- “We’ll see how he progresses though the week.”

(On when they has to make a roster move with Joe Haden coming back)- “Assuming that our roster is the same as last week, we will have to make a roster move there and we’ll make those moves here later in the week.”

(On the importance of winning at home)- “You want to win every game, certainly and you would like it to most of the time happen at home so you create that home field advantage which is tough for the opponent. We get that and this is a division game so it is kind of a double-whammy there. Winning a division game at home would be great for our young team.”

(On how sharp he anticipates Joe Haden to be Sunday given his layoff)- “I think he’ll be extremely sharp. In talking with him about how he spent his time away and knowing the kind of condition and the kind of shape he keeps himself in, I anticipate physically he’ll be sharp. It’s just a matter of going out there and practicing and getting his sea legs back this week so he’s ready to go on Sunday.”

(On if the return of Joe Haden will bring a boost to the locker room)- “I think he’s back in the lineup and he’s playing and he’s one of our better defensive players. By the essence of somebody’s presence sometimes that can happen and I anticipate he’s going to go out there and battle just like all of the other guys.”

(On who will play in the slot if Dimitri Patterson can’t play)- “We’ll see. We’ve got Buster (Skrine), Sheldon (Brown), Trevin (Wade) and (Johnson) Bademosi so we’ll get the right combination with Joe.”

(On if all four of those players can play on the inside)- “I think so, yeah.”

(On if it is tough for a rookie quarterback to learn to balance being aggressive and when to be smart and fight for the next down)- “I don’t think it’s tough to balance it. I think you can continue to inspire him to do the right thing with the football. You want a guy that’s aggressive with the ball because you would like to squeeze out all of the offense you can out of every play. I think we’ve found a way to complete deeper balls this year than we did last year which is important, but then you also want to balance it with efficiency so it’s a fine line. How do you go there? You continue to practice and work and you keep going through all of the situations and all of the progressions over and over and over and then he gets a feel for the guys he’s throwing to as well. In each situation, it’s important that he does the right thing with the football. I’ve talked about his before, when a quarterback goes through a game, if he throws a ball 35 times then he’s got a decision making grade, he’s got a accuracy grade, he’s got a timing grade based on the plays and when we called them so you just try to get all pluses in all areas. I think that’s what you’re shooting for.”

(On if it is better that Brandon Weeden is already more on the aggressive side of the ledger)- “I think so. That’s an important thing - where when you talk about being aggressive there’s a built in confidence there and there’s a guy that has some skill and ability and you need that. Then what you do is you just work him through the system, as I mentioned in the progressions, so that he’s constantly being reminded to also be smart with the football.”

(On if Weeden’s interceptions are a matter of making bad decisions or making good decisions and just throwing an inaccurate pass)- “It could happen for all reasons. The ball could have been tipped for instance. The ball could have hit the receiver in the chest and it popped up. He could have just made a bad throw so it happens. I’ve watched all the interceptions and it’s a combination of all of those things and there are certain situations where you can’t save the play with your arm -- you either run it or throw it away. It’s all of it.”

(On if the more that Trent Richardson produces the less Brandon Weeden feels he has to do)- “I don’t know if that’s the case. I think we talked about the Bengals game and how he learned in that game to take some check downs, which he checked the ball down to Trent and then he ran it in one time. I think he was better than he was in the Philly game so it all ties together.”

(On if there is a number in his head of how many touches Trent Richardson should get per game)- “He needs to be involved throughout the game start to finish and he was involved in I think close to 85% of the snaps last week which is his highest total to date. I think you guys all have that information. I’m rounding up just a little bit, but that’s about right. I think it’s safe to say when you have a guy coming back from a minor knee injury that you start to ramp it up that way, and he produced. It’s important for Trent to be involved start to finish and of course for a running back everybody looks at just the rushing yardage. Now, the way the game goes also dictates some of that and we all know that.”

(On what he will do to ensure that opposing teams do not run the ball as effectively as the Giants and if the Giants blocked well)- “I think they blocked well. I think what’s important too is there’s times when they get you blocked at the point of attack and then the rest of the defense fits it all up and you just make sure they don’t get more than their six or eight yards. We had a couple of situations in that game where they got big yards where we could have minimized the effect. It’s team defense and it sounds cliché, but you go over it and over it and over it - making sure everybody is attacking their blockers, defeating the block, addressing their gaps and making sure that where the runner tries to find a place to run, there’s somebody standing in every gap. I think that’s important.”

(On if he is making any adjustments to make sure that does not happen this week)- “We’re going to sure work on it and we expect that the results will be good.”

(On how Billy Winn and John Hughes have handled the run)- “Pretty good, I think they can get better and there’s a lot going on there - getting lined up properly, defeat your block, address your gap, separate and make a play. There’s a lot going on in there and they can continue to improve just like everybody on defense.”

(On how much of a challenge it is having two rookies starting at defensive tackle)- “I think if they are asked to play more than they have they’ve got five games under their belt. I think Ishma’lly Kitchen will help out in there and we’ll do what we have to do to make sure we put fresh bodies in there. I’m confident that they’ll answer the bell.”

(On how he thinks he’s handling criticism and responding to people saying he is not able to handle being second guessed)- “Not being able to handle being second guessed? I tend to handle it fine I think. How it’s perceived, I can’t control that. I’m aware of the fact though based on some of the way the questions come out, I can tell by the question what direction it’s going to go. I do know this, anytime we do something in a game and it does not work then we’re open to it. I think all I was saying was I’m aware it happens. That’s it. I’m at peace with that. When things work very well and we win games then we’ll talk about other issues. That’s all.”

(On how it’s the head coach who takes the heat and has to answer for things)- “I understand that’s the way it goes. I understand, there’re not a lot of things easy in the NFL. It’s very difficult to do all the things we want to do, so you just keep battling. We just keep trying to make, and again, I think I’ve said this before, you make all your decisions based on trying to win the game. Some of them work extremely well and there’re other ones that get done medium, and there’re some things that don’t work out so great. What happens is you continue to keep going. The pass that we talked about, on every down and distance, you can run it or you can throw it. That pass that we were talking about on third down, against the Buffalo Bills with different people on the field in the same situation, we completed that pass to Greg Little. Nothing was talked about because it was executed properly. I understand that. In the game, that same pass, was executed by the Giants against the Cowboys in their Week One game, and they got a first down on it. It’s not uncommon to throw the ball on third and one, I understand that, but anytime anything doesn’t work out great, we all know what happens.”

(On most of the criticism coming from why Trent Richardson was off the field on that third and one play)- “I would say this, again he played in almost 85 percent of the plays that game, and with Chris Ogbonnaya in the game, there was a play he caught a screen pass for 38. There’re guys in and out of the game all the time, and the defense responds to it differently. That’s just the way it goes. We could have handed Chris the ball. With Trent in there, we could have thrown the ball. I get that.”

(On Richardson never being on the field on third downs)- “That’s not true. He was on the field a few snaps and they’re going up as we go.”

(On if the first/second down back is a different position then the third down back)- “I think ideally you want all your best players in there all the time. Now, the reality of it is, you have role players and guys that step in on occasion, and you expect them to perform well. Every team will always be susceptible to having to talk about when a role player is in there and doesn’t do it right, how come the other guy wasn’t in there. That’s part of it. I get that, but the guys we put in the game, we expect them to perform well. That’s the important part.”

(On if they will have to make a roster move because of so many players being injured)- “We always look at the roster each week after the game. We make decisions based on staying pat or making changes. We’re going to have to make a roster change here that involves Joe Haden. Sometimes those involve other things that happen

(On if Weeden has an advantage now facing the Bengals for the second time)- “I think it goes both ways. They may have a feel for him. I think anytime you’re a quarterback and you’ve had a chance to play against a team, it helps you. Then you factor in the fact that you’ve improved since the last time you played them. There’re things we’ll do differently. Even though the matchups are the same, the people, the game is played a little bit different because you’ve played them once before.”

(On if expects Alex Smith to play again this year)- “Yeah, I anticipate Alex will be there.”

(On if Smith will be back this season)- “This season? Yeah, I’m anticipating he’ll play this week.”

(On concussions being an injury that can take a player out for varying amounts of time)- “Each injury, a concussion is technically an injury, they all respond differently. Some guys come back sooner than others.”

(On if Weeden is where he thought he would be after five games)- “He’s improving. He’s about where I thought. He’s encountered some of the struggles that I anticipated he might, but I’m seeing him improve on his mistakes in a way that I knew he would. I think that maybe is a few sentence answer to your question.”

(On if he ever worries about Weeden being gun shy)- “No. I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s the issue at all.”

(On what Andy Dalton has improved upon since his rookie season)- “You can see he’s more confident with more of the skill players he has. He’s spreading the ball around. Obviously they have A.J. Green, but also (Jermaine) Gresham and (Andrew) Hawkins. It feels to me watching the game that he’s more comfortable with more of his skill players. I think that’s a function of being able to work with them.”

(On Andrew Hawkins)- “I think what he gives you is if you overcommit to A.J., then they have a guy over there that’s extremely dangerous, you can throw him the ball and he gets in the end zone. Anytime you have two players that you feel good about throwing the football to, it makes the defense play a little bit more balanced.”

(On if he gets personally involved in the process of coaching Weeden)- “I’m involved. You always watch the quarterback just a little bit more than everybody else, but the way this thing works is whether he’s hearing it from me, or from Brad Childress, or Mark Whipple or Chris Beake, all the people that are talking to the quarterback, we all give him the same message. Mine is allowed to have a little more emotion to it. I think quarterbacks, you’ve got to coach them emotionally a little bit different. You don’t coach them any less hard, but you just make sure you keep working with them. That’s the message.”

I have better hands than Little. ;)
You know what they say about Little hands...

Another training camp guy, Rod Windsor, was signed to the practice squad Wed. 10/10/12.

IOW

DER!!!!! DER DER DER!!!!!!

Completely avoided answering the question because the only good answer is "Because I completely messed up."

You should run Trent on every 3rd and 1 you intend to pick up. Doesn't get more simple than that.

Agreed. The Browns gave up on the run too quickly being down by only 10 points to start the 2nd half against the Giants.Haden being back will help but I am a bit worried about the run defense if Jackson cannot play. The DT's are getting thin now also. The defense needs to fix that. Overall I think the Browns have been playing good defense but things unraveled up the middle with Jackson out of the game.

so do the Browns get their first win this Sunday?

i'm going to say yes, but i don't have a lot of confidence in that prediction.

also i'm predicting that Childress will become the interim coach when Shurmur is fired, though i think i would prefer Jauron.

I feel the same about the game. For the first time in a long time, I think they should be favored slightly.Regarding the coach, what process do you think the new owner will take? Who will he talk to? Anyone?ETA: By "talk to", I mean within the organization (& outside) about coaching personnel & situation.

I hoping he's smart enough to become intimately familiar with the workings of the club before he makes changes.ETA: "I hoping" ??? Yeeesh!

think he's already doing that.

Cincy usually beats bad teams and loses to good teams, I know we've taken them to the end the last 3 times out and should've won at least one of them but I just can't say that with the game on the line I'll take the Cleveland offense over the Cincy offense. If it's there for the taking late I just hope we put the ball in Richardson's hands, if we do that we may have a shot.

From the Childress press conference yesterday-
(On if seeing an imbalance in the run and pass in the first half affects how he calls the second) – “Not usually, because we’re tending to script our openers. It takes us through the first quarter, sometimes into the second quarter. We have a pretty good sense of where we’re at. It’s not like one of those ‘Hey, let’s throw it, throw it, throw it, throw it’, or ‘let’s run it, run it, run it, run it.’ We’ll never get into that. There are a lot of times, Tony (Grossi), to be honest with you that I don’t look at halftime stats. You’re doing it by the way you feel like you need to play to win the game.”(On if he’s ever surprised when he sees the stats) – “I’m never surprised. There are times I think I’ve told you, that you guys were talking about numbers of plays for Trent when he first came back. We’re mindful sometimes of things like that. Sometimes we’ll count carries or touches, but that certainly hasn’t been the case for the last three weeks.”(On Pat Shurmur being criticized for Richardson being off the field for the third and one play) – “We’d like to thrown it to the guy that flashed open in the flat. That’s where it was designed to go first and foremost, and the fact was we didn’t. We got a 50-50, we’re going to run it, (or) we’re going to throw it. We had it up as a throw and a completion for a first down, which it easily could’ve been. In my wildest dreams, I didn’t expect it to go back the other way.”(On it being obvious that they were going to pass with Richardson not there) – “I don’t know if it was obvious, it was open. I know what you’re getting at, is you’re getting at, Trent how come he’s not in the game? He played, what 85 percent, which is 53 out of 60 plays. He has to get a drink of water sometime too, you know? A guy like (Chris) Ogbonnaya has been productive in what he has done for us. When we put them in the game, everybody has some kind of role. It’s not that somebody’s going to be in the game 100 percent of the time.”
http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-1/Childress-press-conf-transcript---1011/76cc18d2-10c5-4510-b271-1ef71f191dafWhile I agree with Childress that a RB to spell Richardson at times should get some carries however he seems to completely ignore that 3rd down and 1 yard to go is not that time. His other comments further prove how clueless he is.The good news is Jackson sounds fine and ready to play. Norwood is out Benjamin and Cooper will be ready to play.

I'm gonna preface this post by kindly asking you all not to call me names. I've suffered enough.

I have an authentic, pro-style Lee Suggs #44 white jersey sitting around. Anyone know where I can get just a finished nameplate so I can at least some use out of this thing? Would go Byner or Kelly but I don't even know if they had names on the back of the jersey when Leroy Kelly played. NOT going Touchdown Tommy Vardell. :)

Oh and another thing- Phil Dawson is the best damn kicker I have ever seen. Wind was whipping around and he made those two field goals and split 'em right down the middle. The guy is flat out clutch and it seems like his leg has gotten stronger throughout the years. I can't even remember the last time he missed.

My only hope is that he is kicking with something big on the line before he retires. And in a Browns uniform.

Kelly played roughly half of his career with his name on the back of his jersey. Of course, the jersey looked a bit different. TV numbers in a different spot. But, hey, close enough.
