Cleveland Browns (10 Viewers)

The GOOD stuff.

- Gilbert looked good. He may have to start sooner than desired due to Skrine's busted finger but he looked good.
I didn't pay close enough attention to the secondary. Did Gilbert get all the first team snaps last night in place of Skrine?
if he didn't get all of them he got a lot of them.
Gilbert will be just fine.

Gilbert + the Bills top 5 pick + the Bills 4th rounder for Watkins. Winning

With Gilbert and Haden now paired up will Haden still play the shadow role over WR1s? If so will S help be rolled there 1st or to Gilbert's side?

hopefully the theory that the offense will come together once they commit to a starter is accurate.

can't believe how bad Hoyer has looked thus far.

The "Curse of the Belichick!"

The Cleveland Browns before their despicable firing of the greatest HC of all time? 421--270, eight League Championships, 27 trips to the Playoffs.

The Cleveland Browns after firing the Hooded One? 77--163, one (lost) Playoff game (WC).
thx, random dude from patsfans board
How have the Baltimore Ravens done, the real team that actually fired Belichick?

I don't know if Pettine/O'Rien plan to specifically use Haden in that role but they said on draft day that the plan all along was to take CB Justin Gilbert so Pettine could impliment his press-man coverage schemes and free-up a safety.

We let SS T.J. Ward go because he wasn't a fit for this scheme. He played-up in the box a ton and was in on a lot of tackles. Whitner has a rep as an enforcer over the middle but he is better at creating turnovers than TJ was and he's better in coverage. Pettine said he doesn't split his safties into traditional 'strong' and 'free' safety roles but he said that both Joe and Justin are their to play 'man-press' coverage and free-up a safety.

Basically look at the Bills-D last year. Corners playing-man press which means a LB or a safety is free to blitz. Pettiene needs two strong press-man CBs to run that scheme.

He hasn't given anything away this preseason in terms of tipping his hand with blitz packages. Any blitz that has been run this preseason has been pretty vanilla overload type of blitzes but we still have gotten 'decent' pressure. The Bills gave up a lot of yards and big plays but they got pressure and created turnovers.

This D should be fun to watch this year.

People will grasp for anything.

I can believe it. He played well for 2.25 games and the final preseason game against the Bears...and is fresh off surgery.

The good news is, they are not force feeding Manziel when it's clear he needs more time learning from practice and the sidelines.

Per Mary Kay: Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could play with QB Brian Hoyer in a two-quarterback system later in the season, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said a package for Manziel is on the table. Pettine said he didn't anticipate a platoon early in the season. Pettine also made it clear that Hoyer is on a week-to-week trial.

Of course, that's just HER opinion, and we know what that's worth...

I think they know he (Hoyer) needs more reps to get the timing down. That was the plan from the beginning. That's why they decided to pick a starter after game 2. Gives them a couple weeks.

It'd be nice if Gordon cared enough to catch the ball.

How long did tate play tonight? I see 3 carries compared to 7 for west. Were they swapping series, or was tate taken out early?

this Kirksey kid looks like a player.
Agreed. Front 7 should be wicked good. If the secondary can do it's part, we'll be just fine on that side of the ball. Anyone notice how much run McFadden has been getting all preseason? Me too...and that will change come Pitt.

JFF making things happen. This playbook lingo has been underplayed...once he gets the offense down, I think he's going to be ok.

We're pretty deep on D-Line and the Pack always seems to be pretty deep at WR.

Browns fans... can you all work this out on some kind of local Browns form or take out an add in the Cleveland newspapers to all show up to the stadium wearing these t-shirts?

http://teespring.com/hita#####notabong

I feel like this would be hilarious to see at a game and be seriously embarrassing for the NFL.

The Good

- Nobody got hurt

I'm not sure we've ever had an offseason and training camp and entire preseason without one solid starter getting injured but somehow we managed that this year so you have to recognize that even with the suspension of JG.

- Hoyer and the offense actually made a crip decisive drive albeit against second stringers

I think Brian's struggles are four-fold. The ACL is effecting him even if its in small ways losing even slight mobility or explosion in the NFL can make a difference. Pettine has mentioned this and I think its a valid point. He's learning Shanny's offense. The receivers and the rest of the O is learning Shanny's offense. The decision and the reps that went to JFF and the packages that are being created for Johnny which have taken away reps for Brian. Bottom line. Brian should improve both physically as he continues to come back from the ACL and he and the rest of the team should get more comfy with Shanny's offense.

- JFF showed up

Look at what he did and how that effects a defense. JFF hadn't showed up and if you ask why you find an answer. At A&M the offense was built on speed and freelancing by Johnny. What does that do to a pass rush? It tires it out. If Johnny takes off once or twice or his scrambles are run over time where the pass rush can catch their wind he isn't JFF but last night we saw him take the reins and do his thing where he found a rythmn and quite frankly he gassed the D-Line. He made his big throw outside of the pocket after he had made a few runs and forced the pass rush to try and catch him. They were tired and the DE who had contain on that play literally fell down and didn't even get up. Manziel had a wide open passing lane and he was running forward giving him extra momentum and his arm extra strength. THIS IS HIS GAME. Running around and tiring out a defense which open up passing lanes that he can step-up into. This could work in the NFL at the very least in packages but Johnny would have to get the D tired by running around. That is the key IMHO.

- This WR free agent Taylor Gabriel could make the team and earn PT

Kid has lead the team in receptions and yardage. He's the only one consistently performing/producing. What more can you ask for?

- Kirksey

Wow. We may actually have found a gem. Pass coverage is his thing but he has shown he is really good against the run also. I have to say that Robertson has also looked solid in the run game too so it looks like a LB-BC for now but this kid looks great.

- Mingo

I'm still a bit leery but he isn't just playing horseshoes out there where he only getting close, he's making traps. Now can he do that against Big Ben? I'm not so sure but he has impressed this preseason so he gets props.

The Bad

- Justin Gilbert

WTF? I've heard of soft coverage, I've seen soft coverage but playing twenty yards off of Santonio? Soft is one thing, limp is another. Dude needs a fluffer. I had no idea it was Gilbert but I saw how the DB was lined up and I was screaming at the screen and saw that TD happen in slow-mo. Only afterwards I realized it was GIl and I'm thinking WTF? Doesn't this kid run a 4.3 something? Isn't he supposed to be great playing press? He had safety help and he's stilli playing so far off I couldn't read the number on the screen. He's looked awful the last two games. Just bad. We can't have him start the way he's playing right now. His confidence is shattered or something. Bleh!

- Hoyer

He's still not right. Scrambles to his left, has Jordan wide open on the corner and throws fifteen yards out of bounds.

- Manziel

What the heck is up with his deep ball? What the hell? I'm utterly at a loss. Positively Brady Qinn-eske in terms of horrific throws.

The Average

- The receivers

No need to elaborate

--------------------------

Random thoughts

I think we hadn't played Crowell because we know he's not ready and we wanted to try and sneak him on the practice squad, not happening now.

The issues on offense, not just the QBs or receivers seems to be a Shanahan issue. Throwing too much too soon, the split reps at QB, the new blocking scheme (that is coming along fine but its still new stuff) the new personnel at RB/WR/QB, new coaches, etc. Basically that would have taken time and we should have anticipated bumps but added to that is Hoyer's ACL and the unorthodox way Manziel plays, err plays well. If we try to force JFF into being a pocket passer then we blew those picks but if we do see how effective he can be if he is able to gas a D to open up passing lanes then we may have a weapon that will make defenses lose their urine. He can scare the jabeejus out of defenses if he is able to play his game even if his deep ball looks fugly.

I never understood why so many were so high on Gilbert throughout the predraft process and I hate to jump to conclusions too quickly, but this is exactly what I was afraid of. He's athletic as hell, but he's not a good football player. It's on this coaching staff to make him one.

Yeah. I'm worried, too. I can only hope they get this kid straight soon.

Many people don't recall but Joe Haden didn't start his rookie season until the 11th game. He was the nickel back and Eric Wright was starting over him.

Also many people don't remember but 'Bid Dawg' Hanford Dixon didn't start till the third game of the 1981 season so starting a rookie CB is very rare. More rare than people realize so if Gilbert doesn't start I'm not sweating anything right now.

Some cuts trickling out.

RB Chris Obgannayo and RB Dion Lewis both cut according to MKC along with WR Nate Burelson and G Garrett Gilkey. I think Gilkey 'might' be elligible for the new 10 player practice squad if he clears waivers.

Tony Grossi pointed out, correctly, that last year we cut veteran WR David Nelson after he was injured all camp and preseason when he struggled in his only preseason game. Burelson looked 'good' but he got cut. Last year Nelson went onto sign with Buffalo and he looked good so Grossi said this could be another mistake and considering how shaky our WR corps are, I have to agree with him.

Full 'official' list comes out later today.

One interesting tweet from FB Ray Agnew.

... Fullback Ray Agnew tweeted that he has made the team. With Lewis and Ogbonnaya being cut, it means undrafted rookie Isaiah Crowell has likely made the team following his 103-yard rushing performance in the preseason finale that also included a 48-yard touchdown run.
No word yet on FB Marquise Gray.

MKC tweeted we might be interested in WR Stephen Hill who was just cut by the Jets. Pettine was in New York when the Jets took Hill in the second round.

Their have been a couple of articles that have come out but this one has more reasonable, lower end of the roster names, that might be in play.

First name they put out there is WR Stephen Hill 'reportedly' just cut by the Jets.

Ian Rapoport@RapSheet · 2h

The #Jets are planning to waive WR Stephen Hill, source said. May still try to trade him, since it’s before the deadline.
-------------------------------------------

They make the same logical connection of depth on the Browns D-Line with depth on differnt NFL rosters but they also mention the Pack and Cobb isn't a name they bring up.

http://www.foxsports.com/ohio/story/cleveland-browns-wide-receiver-stephen-hill-jarrett-boykin-082914

The Cleveland Browns have to finalize their regular-season roster by Saturday.

That process is more than just cutting players and eventually putting together a 10-man practice squad, starting Sunday. The Browns are very much still building, and this final cutdown offers possibilities via trade and waiver claims.

One place it seems the Browns have to look is wide receiver. 2013 NFL receiving champ Josh Gordon is gone for at least the season, and the offense's early struggles have included dropped passes and an inability to test defenses deep.

Saturday's cutdowns to the regular-season roster size of 53 across the league will make a lot of players available. The process often leads to trades -- mostly minor, many involving just conditional picks -- as teams shore up areas and parlay depth into future draft assets.

Young players who get waived are subject to the league's waiver claim process; after 24 hours, interested teams can place a claim and those claims are awarded based on the waiver order. Players with more than four years of experience are considered vested veterans, so at least through midseason, they are not subject to the waiver process.

The waiver order remains the same it's been since the end of last season, from worst to strongest based on 2013 record, just like the draft. That changes after three weeks of this season to 2014 record.

Below is a look at some names to watch at the receiver position as the Browns monitor the wire and work the telephones between now and Saturday...

Stephen Hill, New York Jets

Hill is big and fast and is just three seasons into his career, but it's never clicked for him with the Jets. His bad knees haven't helped.

The 6'4 Hill has 45 catches over his first two seasons with the Jets, and all reports say he's had a rather unspectacular preseason in a pretty important spot. Maybe longtime friends Mike Pettine of the Browns and Rex Ryan of the Jets will talk about it, though the Jets are also a receiver-needy team.

If the Jets want to part with Hill -- that remains an "if" -- the asking price would be low. There's a chance he may even be waived on Saturday.

The Browns appear to be at their quota of small receivers with Andrew Hawkins, Travis Benjamin and undrafted rookie Taylor Gabriel looking like they'll all be on the final 53, so a big receiver would seem to be the preferred target.

Jarrett Boykin, Davante Adams and Jeff Janis, Packers

On the surface, the Packers and Browns make an obvious match in that the Packers have a bunch of wide receivers and recently lost nose tackle B.J. Raji for the season; the Browns need help at wide receiver and are deep across the defensive line.

Like most things, though, doing a deal here probably isn't as easy as it looks. Boykin is just 24, is on a team-friendly contract and got good experience last season. He's beaten out Adams, a speedy second-round pick, for the Packers No. 3 wide receiver job coming out camp.

It would be a surprise if the Browns could pry the No. 3 receiver away from a Packers team that thinks it can win the Super Bowl. The Packers overall receiver depth took a hit when the team had to place sixth-round rookie Jared Abbrederis on injured-reserve, but this is still a team that drafted three receivers in 2014 with established players on the roster.

Janis is a 6'3, 219-pound rookie from Saginaw Valley State. He caught just two passes in the preseason, but they covered 34 and 33 yards, respectively. Adams was second on the team in the preseason with six catches for 85 yards, including one touchdown. There's a possibility Janis could be waived and claimed; it's probably likely that both Boykin and Adams remain with the Packers.

Denarius Moore, Oakland Raiders

Moore's name has surfaced in several trade rumors over the last month -- how legit those might be is anyone's guess -- and the Raiders are a rebuilding team that could use an upgrade in several areas. The Raiders aren't exactly stacked at wide receiver and Moore has been pretty productive; the thought that Moore may be expendable probably stems from the team's offseason acquisition of long-time Packers receiver James Jones. Still, when it comes to Moore, would the Browns really want a guy let go by a team that keeps Greg Little?

Da'Rick Rogers, Indianapolis Colts

The 6'3, 215-pound Rogers caught 14 passes and two touchdowns for the Colts last season, but he's always had maturity issues -- and the Colts might not be willing to wait for Rogers to grow up. After the Bills cut Rogers last summer the Colts signed him first to their practice squad and then to the active roster. This summer, he's been in a tough battle for jobs and snaps on a team that wants to win now. If he ever grows up -- sound familiar? -- he could be an impact player.

Cobi Hamilton, Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have some tough decisions to make at wide receiver, especially given the injury to Marvin Jones, and if they waive Hamilton the Browns could be interested. Hamilton is 6'2, is just 23, and spent last season on the Bengals practice squad after leaving Arkansas as the school's all-time receptions leader. There's probably not another Josh Gordon out there just waiting for a chance, but Hamilton is one of many the Browns could see as a developmental prospect and a much-needed big target.

Brittan Golden and Walt Powell, Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals may keep six receivers and may keep both. Golden led all NFL receivers with 18 preseason catches and made a handful of big plays in spot duty last season; Powell is a sixth-round pick out of Murray State. One potential holdup: With this looking like Larry Fitzgerald's last season in Arizona, the Cardinals will likely be hesitant to give up on any young receivers they see as a long-term fit.

thanks. yeah i'm not pushing the panic button on Gilbert just yet.

seems like rookie CBs need a bit of time to transition.

Are folks still happy with this year's draft? I still can't understand how they came out of it without a quality WR. I understand I seem to be in the minority on that one. But it's playing out exactly how I feared it would.

but... there are adfas that may be starting for other teams so also yes, disappointed they didn't take a few shots at WR.

but in reality, not sure what the chances are they could've gotten someone who could start this year.

I understand that. But given the dire situation, I guess I just didn't think that "nothing" was the best option for addressing the issue.

My doubts about Gilbert are coming to fruition, that light bulb needs to turn on fast. Not picking a wr in the best wr class ever Gordon or no Gordon was a huge mistake. Don't think it matters how good Kirskey, West, and Bitino end up being. That said, the success of this draft hinges on Johnny. I don't feel better about him now than I did then but I don't feel worse either. Still preferred Teddy though.

Manziel was a waste of a pick.

rest of the draft was fine, as long as Gilbert gets it together.

they probably should have taken a WR though, the more i think about it.

I am fine with the Gilbert pick I guess. And I don't have a big problem with any pick in a vacuum (other than JM, but no use crying over that one). I just wish they had passed on one of them in favor of a WR.

I said the second they passed on Khalil Mack their draft was terrible. Mack is going to dominate for a decade. You win in the NFL by having a QB and hitting the other team's QB. Drafting Watkins would have been a mistake when Mack is on the board. But trading down for a CB was laughable. Even if he was a pro bowler, Gilbert will not have anywhere near the impact of a Mack. I can understand picking Manziel but Bridgewater was the better prospect.

The Browns have no QB and no pass rush. They have been that way forever, and will be one of the worst teams in the league until they stop making the same mistakes picking players.

Drafting Gilbert over Mack is a fireable offense IMO. All Ray Farmer has done is helped rebuild the Raiders by handing them Mack.

We cut Grossman.

I guess he was signed to try and help Hoyer and Manziel get up to speed with Shanny's system and now we have him on speed dial should we have any injuries at QB which seems inevitable.

Obviously we're not done making moves and I would imagine the bottom of this roster will see a slow churn even after the fenetic turnover we should see over the next week or so but Grossman cut caught me off guard.
