END GAME

So...  Game 2 vs Ravens.  My conclusion is that they TRIED to run the ball, but were ineffective.  By the time Q4 came around, it made no sense whatsoever.  Does anybody think Hue gave up on the run too early in this game?

I think the Browns ran the ball far too little, and threw the ball with a very raw rookie QB way too much.

The smart move would have been to run the ball much more whether it was working or not, and whether the score dictated it or not, rather than just toss your raw rookie QB to the wolves when he shouldn't have even played at all last year.

This was the Kizer migraine game.

I thought the team looked unprepared from the outset - again.  Then I think Hue got impatient with the run game.  Then Hogan came in and the game plan went in the trash - if there even was one.

@daveR Thanks for this recap!  I agree, by the 4th it's not worth running as the game was out of hand.  They were down 11 pts halfway thru the 3Q.  Once they went down by 14, they needed to pass to have a chance.

There were a total of  21 total Run Plays out of 71 offensive snaps (not counting FG or Punts - but does include INT and Sacks).  That is a 44 Pass (68%) vs 21 Rush (32%).  If I roll INT into Pass and Sacks into Runs, it becomes 46 (65%) Pass vs 25 Rush (35%).

Breakdown by Qtr
1Q
- 9 Pass, 1 INT = 10 Plays
- 6 Rush, 1 Sack = 7 Plays
--> Gain of 19yds on Rush plays (3.2 Y/A)

2Q
- 9 Pass, 1 INT = 10 Plays
- 6 Rush, 2 Sack = 8 Plays
--> Gain of 20yds on Rush plays (2.5 Y/A)

3Q
- 5 Pass, 0 INT = 5 Plays
- 4 Rush, 1 Sack = 5 Plays
--> Gain of 25yds on Rush plays (5 Y/A)

4Q
- 19 Pass, 2 INT = 21 Plays
- 5 Rush, 0 Sack = 5 Plays
--> Gain of 29yds on Rush plays (5.8 Y/A)

Total of 21 Runs saw 6 QB Scrambles for 31yds, 14 RB Rushes for 58yds, and 1 WR Rush for 4 yds.

Through the first 3 quarters, there were 13 RB Rushes for 42 yards and 2 QB scrambles for 18 yards.

In the 4th Qtr, there were 4 QB Scrambles to the 1 RB Rush - even though the RB gained more yards than the QB on the ground (QB 13 yds, RB 16 yds).

Having minimal time of possession in the 3rd Quarter killed any momentum the team was gaining, which is unfortunate as the 3Q was this team's best rushing quarter of the game.  Their Y/A in rushing would've helped them keep moving, but Sacks and INT killed any and all momentum.  You can see where Hue pulled the plug on the running game after the FG making it 10-21.  Game Time decreased and the team began trying to play hurry-up through the air.  They maintained this pace on their last 6 drives.  One could argue that the run game may have helped narrow the score a little more in the 4th Qtr - but the running game wasn't going to win this one.

More egregiously, after two successful runs to open drive #2 Hue went throw-throw-throw-throw.  It isn't apples-to-apples, but after recovering from the start to drive #3 going off the rails he called throw 3 out of 4 times on plays in which he could have called either.  That's when Kizer exited.

I didn't leave the Pittsburgh game with many questions about how that game was executed.  I did with this one though.  I wasn't carrying a pitch fork screaming for his head, but looking back this game was step #1.  If there was a plan there was no commitment to it and they were woefully unprepared for the 2nd week in a row.

You see fit to complain even when the play is effective, eh?  C'est la vie.

I'm looking at the big picture- not singular plays in a vacuum.  I think if you do the latter then you'll just spin around in circles because you can find individual points to refute any narrative.

Big picture, Hue couldn't wait to get away from the run in this game.  And 10 total points later it predictably failed.

Yep.  Cause they were doing it so well.

They got beat by a better team, a veteran team, that shut down their running game.  I'm pretty sure they could have run it 50 times and not gotten more than 150 yards.

Considering they ran for only 3 Qtrs, they had 93 rushing yards on 21 attempts for a 4.4 Y/A.  Had they rushed 50 more times......just saying.   :D

There are two sides to every story - no doubt.  But regardless, you have to look at some of these drives and wonder why so few running plays were called.  Even the drive you pulled out above, there were 2 Running plays and 3 passing plays - where only 1 pass was effective.  Those two runs they were averaging 5yds/carry.  For the game they averaged over 4 yds a carry.  Why not run it on the 1st or 2nd down after that pass play?  Why come back with 3 straight pass attempts, one of which led to a sack/fumble because it was 3rd and long.  The HC put the rookie QB in that position with his play-calling, IMO.  He needed to use the run more and mix in the short, high percentage pass plays.  It's great he connected for a 20yrd pass play when the defense wasn't expecting it.  But why stop running there?  The game wasn't out of hand.

I appreciate the work you're doing, but the quoted isn't analysis - it's bias.

It's also not as simple as run or pass, but that's a different story than what you're doing.

Pretty sure you missed his point and that’s what the next few posts will reveal as I work my way down....

On 1st & 10, in the first 3 quarters, between the 20s, when the game was within 8 points, the average NFL team ran on 53.6% of plays. Cleveland ran on 61.6% of those plays, the 5th most in the NFL.

(Although if you count QB runs as passing plays, then those numbers get closer: 54.2% for CLE vs. 50.4% for the average team.)

How about in the 4th Quarter - regardless of down, point spread, or field location - the Average NFL team ran an Average of 110 running plays - of which CLE only ran 67 (15 less than the 31st team in the lg)?

How about when a team has a lead in the 2nd half - regardless of down or field location - the Average NFL team ran an Average of 135 running plays - of which CLE only ran 27?    This is 35 plays less than the next highest team on the list. Granted CLE didn't maintain a lead in as many games as other teams.  With that said, the total Rushing plays are far, far below an NFL Team Average.

Can I infer from this that, in your mind, it doesn't matter if you're winning or losing, you should still run the ball late in a game?

Still waiting......
GG, "worst coach in the league" is subjective as are more of the claims against him such as, "abandons the running game too soon".  I am trying to show that the anti-Hue bias is what is driving the perception, not the facts.

In my mind, continuity is very underrated.  I've yet to see a team that turns over coaches every two years become a dynasty and I am certain that learning new systems stymies the growth of young teams.  Beyond that, I am encouraged by what I hear from him.  He believes in working hard to attain success.  I don't think there is any other way at this level.

In the first half they had runs of 3,0,9,2,2,3,-1,0,5 by Hogan,1 and 2.  How many would you say were "successful"?

:lmao: .  Dude he was so bad it was sickening.  From clock management to declining penalties that he shouldnt to trying to force guys to do things they cant do, and yes, abandoning the run when it was our only offensive strength.

The bias is real because the SUCK was real.  Very real.

I would say every play we ran that didnt involve Kizer dropping back for 5 seconds trying to force the ball 40 yards down field was a successful play.

Okay.  Back it up.  One thing you purport is "declining penalties he shouldn't".  Show me just 3 examples of him doing that throughout the entire season.

I suggest taking a look at the Titans game, quarter #1.

GG is right, I’m not sure why you need 3 to make it wrong.
Simply because some calls are mistaken.  Nobody gets everything right all the time.  Do you think Belichick never got one wrong?  I guarantee you he does -- every year!  Beyond that, it was GG's post that made the statement in plural so as to imply that Hue is stupid.  So, since the implication is that only "the worst coach in the league" would do something this stupid multiple times, it is his to prove.

Seriously???  THAT'S your example???  Declining a penalty to make it fourth down?  (THEN they got the stop on 4-1, but somebody jumped offside or something!)  WOW!

Most of what you typed here I don’t care about. I thought of one off the top of my head within seconds of reading these posts between you two.

I’ll be more up front with what I’d like to see:  review what happened and report back your defense of Hue.

Oh, and while you’re at it, please direct me to these blunders by B.B....Ya know, since you’re saying he has these flubs every year. I’d like you to “prove” it.

Amazing post. I’m literally flabbergasted by your insistence to defend him in any instance. (Edit: I don’t even know if this sentence makes sense. I’m in shock right now reading your posts)

That’s not even a judgement call he botched.

The Titans ended up with 3 points later in the drive and that game went to overtime.

These are exactly the reasons why Hue is 1-31 and why we didn’t win #### last year.

You have to be a special coach to decline that penalty. Succop is one of the best kickers inside 50 too. Its hard to take anyone seriously that defends the coach in this situation.

While you guys analyze the running game I’ll work on a Hue botch list. How’s that sound?

To be honest, if it were me, I would probably have taken the penalty.  Still, if this play is significant to your determination that the coach is incompetent, I stand by my statement that you have decided the outcome and are looking for justification.  Letting them try on 4th-1, (and getting the stop!) is hardly a sign of incompetence.

Hue, you can stop trying to defend yourself.  You didn't get fired.  You do realize you are currently still the coach of the Browns, and will be for week 1 of 2018 right?  You can stop now.

I do appreciate the "everyone makes mistakes" defense though.  Kinda like when my wife leaves the light on 500 days in a row, but when I do it ONCE I get the "see, you do it, too" response.  In case you don't get the analogy, my wife would be Hue, and I would be BB in that scenario.

Okay.  I know your mind is made up.  That's fine.  I didn't want to get into a pissing contest.  Based on your scenario, it should be easy for you to show me "500 days in a row" of Hue declining penalties.  So far, I've only seen one and it is debatable.

Regarding the question we are addressing with the play-by-play recaps.  There is good evidence that they were running effectively, but abandoned it when they got (well) behind.  I count this game as evidence in your favor.

Okay.  I know your mind is made up.
I admit, I laughed. It's obvious to anyone with a surviving brain cell that you BOTH have your minds made up and this back and forth is going to go absolutely nowhere. Unfortunately, even though it is the off-season and there isn't a lot to chat about, it is dragging this thread down something awful. Like, to the point where it is becoming unreadable. Any chance you two could just admit neither of you are going to budge on your positions, agree to disagree and move on? Just a request of course. You're both free to argue on ad nauseam if you'd like.

In your opinion, is the length of the play-by-play posts a pain in the butt?  I could edit them down quite a bit.  And, I agree that we're unlikely to budge from our positions, so I will move on from that conversation.

It's my opinion that, as fans, we have very little info to evaluate coaching.  We watch the games.  We have no idea what was practiced.  We have no idea who missed what assignment and why.  We don't know what the reads are and what adjustments are made.  We are not privy to the game plan.   We don't know when the QB can change the play or what his options are.  We don't know when the WRs run the wrong route.  We don't know who is injured, sick or just gassed.

Everybody's entitled to his opinion.  Mine is that the coach is fine and continuity is very valuable.  With that, I'll move on.

The length of your posts is fine. I have no issue at all with the info you post. Honestly, I simply skip them. I'm here more for draft discussions, stuff like that. It was just the head-butting that was growing tiresome as I could see the angst growing on both sides. Appreciate your moving on from that. :thumbup:

Cecil Lammey saying he thinks the Broncos will try to move-up for the #1 pick if they don't get Cousins.

depending on what happens with Cousins, I wouldn't be surprised to see the #Broncos trade up to no1 overall. #NFLDraft @1043TheFan

If we don’t get cousins do you see Denver being very aggressive in the draft?

===========================================================

Jets have stated they are willing to move-up for a QB.  Last year they wanted to move down and it happened.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jets-gm-mike-maccagnan-is-willing-to-trade-up-in-the-draft-for-a-quarterback/

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan is willing to trade up in the draft for a quarterback

Mike Maccagnan declared a desire to trade down last year and then wound up doing just that on draft day
If two teams start bidding war for top pick then we'd get more than trade chart which would be a top 5/6 pick plus a high 2nd this year plus a 1st round pick next.

I think Mayfield will be their at #4 pick and that Dorsey would be fine taking him with that pick and get a blue chip player at 5/6 plus getting as much as he can acquire in a deal for top pick.
