2. Tight ends are still one of the best contracts in the NFL. They still often make barely half as much as the top receivers in the league despite how many ways tight ends can impact the game. Blocking, playaction and obviously so few defenses have players are equipped to deal with the size and athletic combination tight ends can deliver.

Well, I'll give the Browns this, they aren't afraid to spend money. I think Conklin is a solid RT(though not elite), Hooper was a huge overpay for a mediocre at best TE, and Keenum is a high-end backup QB, who can easily start if need be(hopefully he doesn't need to)

The Browns have taken a small step forward on day 1.

Hope so cause I am not seeing any alignment that makes sense that doesn't involve Scho or Blake Martinez. There are a lot of holes on defense and the talent available leaves plenty to be desired. Must plug as many holes with good starters and not just bodies before the well runs dry.

Love what was done earlier today. Baker thrives in 2 te sets. So give him a good young TE to pair with Chief. Conklin was expensive, but the most important thing is years weren't necessary to sign him. And a veteran backup was needed, but not anyone that would threaten Baker, but mentor him. 

Can the analytics boogeyman officially die now?

Here are the top LB FA signings so far.

  • Jamie Collins to the Lions — 3/30, $18MM guaranteed.
  • Kyle Van Noy to the Dolphins — 4/51, $30 MM guaranteed.
  • Blake Martinez to the Giants -- 3/30, no word on guarantees yet.
  • LB Tyler Matakevich to the Bills -- 2 years, 9 milllion.
  • LB Christian Kirksey - 2-year, $16 million Packers $4M signing bonus
FWIW look at the contract that Blake Martinez signed for a close comparison to what Joe will/should get.  Blake Martinez signed a 3 year, $30,000,000 contract with the New York Giants, including an average annual salary of $10,000,000. Last year the top LBers got this:  Last year C.J. Mosley signed an enormous contract (five years, $85 million) with the Jets and Kwon Alexander signed a massive deal (four years, $54 million) with the Niners.  

Look how much those contracts were compared to this year. 

I noted Schobert's metrics above in a post and how much they differed once Myles got suspended and noted how little those huge FA LBers produced last year.  His camp 'may' have expected/hoped for more but I don't think he's getting any offers close to the top LBers from last year.  

Berry knew the FA  LB market would correct and from the looks above it has so Joe 'probably' realizes he needs to come back to earth and his best situation is playing  behind Myles since his numbers took a tumble once Myles was sat.

(RotoWire) The Broncos traded Janovich (elbow) to the Browns for a 2021 seventh-round pick Tuesday, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Analysis: In four seasons in Denver, Janovich started 19 of his 50 appearances, reeling in 22 (of 28 targets) for 233 yards and one TD while adding three more scores on the ground. Upon joining Cleveland, he'll get to pave the way for standout Nick Chubb and likely Kareem Hunt, who received a second-round tender from the organization Monday.

The Vikings OL hasn't been good. Has he played well despite what's going on around him?

Either way I'm more inclined to make this position Callahan's project. He has enough guys that could work. So, figure it out and use our resources elsewhere.

For me, it depends on his actual cost and if it impacts acquisitions on defense. At this point, assuming the round 1 target is a LT then defense is priority. We have enough tools for a quality offense. Any more additions would be luxuries, which would be fine if it doesn't impact moves on the other side of the ball. Because as is our defense is a sieve - and most of the good ones aren't signed beyond this year.

Yeah.  I get it, but I'd be thrilled if we could just get the o-line fixed this year.  I'd be okay adding a vet LT AND drafting one at #10.  Yes, that would leave the defense hurting.  I'd still be pleased that they finalized the O-line.  Having said that, I know it's just one dream of mine that analytics will never support.

That isn't true at all. If Peters grades out as starting caliber (he does), but isn't getting multi-year offers (we don't know) and there's room in the budget (somewhere between maybe and probably) for him then he meets the criteria...if he passes a physical - and if he remains unsigned for an extended period of time then I think it's fair to speculate that's the reason.

Vikings release...Josh Kline? 282 Gotta say, didn’t see that one coming

I mean...okay. But why? Kline, signed in free agency last year from Tennessee, was one of the guys most people thought (myself included) was one of the strengths in an offensive that needs to be upgraded.

Now, it needs more upgrading. With the release, the Vikings save about $1.5 million in cap money, but at the cost of almost $4.5 million in dead cap. If there was a guard I thought might be released not named Kline, I was looking at Pat Elflein, who had a salary bump of $2.3 million, and had they cut him would have incurred only 200K in dead cap, realizing $2 million in savings.

I have to say, I’m having a hard time figuring this one out. I looked at his PFF rankings, and his run blocking was graded out at a 62.3. Knowing that the Vikings are going are really going to full on run first, maybe the thinking is it’s time for Dru Samia to step up and shine. Samia has only played RG in college, Elflein graded out as a better run blocker (66.2, not much, but I’m trying Ringo, I’m reeeeeeallllly trying), and the Vikes do need to get younger....

apparently his attitude in "refusing to take less money" was the reason for the cut.

The Vikings gave Kyle Rudolph an extension last year just so they could get under the salary cap. I haven't re-familiarized myself with their cap situation this year, but just from a cursory review it's still not pretty - any of the next 3 years actually. I think poor management may still be the answer (most NFL teams are run poorly), but there's also a reason they asked him to take a cut.

 
The fan reaction to the cut is speculation over a series of concussions but they seem to be grasping at straws so maybe he didn't want to negotiate with their FO.

They franchised Harrison the safety who we are 'rumored' to be interested in.  If they are that cash-strapped he 'might' become available.  They dealt Diggs which also seemed to shock many Viking fans and that 'seemed' like a money-move.

Perhaps.  My point about analytics is that it doesn't seem logical to pour lots of money into the O-line.  Most teams pay one or two guys & then patchwork the rest.  Having a line with five quality starters (my dream) is rarely seen, and I assume it's a resource-allocation driven decision.

That isn't true either. Analytics says you don't pay for depth. You pay for starters at priority positions though. Tackle's identified as a priority position.

 
Unlike his predecessor, Berry's prioritizing depth. But most importantly, not paying for it. Now we wait-and-see if he identifies Ogunjobi as a core piece and gets him re-upped this summer/fall.

 
KJ, nickel corner was a MUCH bigger need than LT and he is a quality starter. Huge get. I don't understand why his market wasn't hotter, but if this goes well then hello future comp picks.

BROWNS SIGN DI ANDREW BILLINGS TO A ONE-YEAR, $3.5 MILLION DEAL

This Billings contract looks to be one of the better deals of free agency to this point. He has played 600 or more defensive snaps — a sizable amount for a nose tackle — and recorded overall grades of 69.0 or higher in each of the past two seasons. Unlike a lot of men that large, he has also shown a little bit of juice as a pass rusher over center. Billings has recorded the tenth-highest pass-rushing grade (70.9) out of 30 interior defenders with 150 or more pass-rushing snaps lined up over center in the past two seasons. The Browns did well to get a solid 25-year old nose tackle at just $3.5 million given his recent performance and deals given out to other similar players.

There are a lot of OTs & OGs worth drafting early, but most(?) agree on the top 4.  Without a "plan B", facilitated by signing Peters for example, we seem to be locked in at #10, even if an elite player falls to us.  If not, though, we could still draft one of the OTs and give him time to develop.  The downside is probably tying up some cap space.  

BTW, I'm still interested in Kline.

What elite player will take priority to an elite tackle? FWIW, I don't necessarily disagree about signing Peters anyway.
