Cleveland Offense (1 Viewer)

Carthon out, OL Coach Jeff Davidson takes over... here's an interesting read: Browns New OC

It mentions that line believes that offense can run more effectively if more run plays are called -- do you all think this translates to a bump for R Droughns? More specifically, does his value increase only as much as folks should try and sell now or enough that he should be kept on a roster?

Any impact on the passing game?

Thanks and cheers!

Preface: I am not a Browns homer.

The Browns do have some decent skill players on offense. Frye is developing nicely at QB. JJ was a ten td guy last year. Droughns is a multiple 1000 yard back. KWII and Edwards are both very, very gifted.

If play calling is the root of their offensive woes, then going to the O-line coach (who is well respected by the team) would seem to give them an obvious spark. I recall their O-line being decimated by injuries, particularly at center during training camp. Half way through the season, if they have developed any chemistry and can establish a running game that is remotely similar to last season, that will clearly open up the passing game.

Right now, opposing defenses do not respect Frye enough to abandon a run defense that keeps 8 up in the box. That, coupled with the O-line's inability to create running lanes for Droughns has stifled the Browns.

The Browns faced New Orleans, Cinci, Ravens, Oakland, Carolina, and Denver thus far. As of now, those teams are ranked as follows in over all defense:

NO - 13th

Cinci - 19th

Ravens - 3rd

Oakland - 5th

Carolina - 17th

Denver - 4th

That is some fairly tough competition. Also, their offense was hit with injuries to Droughn (shoulder), JJ (Ribs), Winslow (nagging knee problem).

I think that they have the makings of a good offense.

The offensive line has not been decimated by injuries. A lot was made of losing Bentley in training camp, but the truth is they were able to swing a trade for a capable replacement and the other 4 guys on the line have been playing this year.It appears the players like Davidson, but that doesn't mean he will be a good OC. He has no track record. We do know that the Browns are dead-last in the NFL in yards gained, so there is nowhere to go but up. This should be a chip-shot for him, really.

im in the same realm of thinking. There is nowhere for this offense to go but up at this point. I dont expect 'drastic' improvement from the skill players, but a little boost for droughns/KWII/Edwards. They have a good game this week against a soft defense in the jets to try and get everything on track and put a shot of confidence into the browns.

I found this article fascinating. If the comments in the article are true that Carthon was having trouble calling plays properly then I can't see how this offense wouldn't improve drastically based purely on just calling the plays with proper protection.

The story twice identifies Carthon as not being able to properly set play calls with protection alignments. If that's true, then it's clear that Cleveland hasn't been running all their plays properly which would logically cause the offense as a whole to be at a disadvantage.

An exaggerated example would be if the play call had the QB rolling to his right but the protection was not recognizing it OR worse actually had the players blocking their man into the same direction the QB was about to roll. Such a situation would obviously put the QB in a horrible situation where he would have little to no time to make a read and could potentially be forced into a turnover.

So, what I'm saying is that the offense would have to drastically improve based purely on having proper protection and playcalling. Plays that were being run at 50% efficiency will now be run at full efficiency with all the players on the same page at the same time. Put 5 guys on a football sled and let them push whichever direction they want and you wont move the sled. Have them all on the same page and pushing in the same direction and they'll move that sled with ease. It's the same thing with a playcall and protection. If everyone's not on the same page then you're not firing on all cylinders.

They are actually one only a few teams that have started the same OL this entire season. That said, I wish Bentley was the anchor.

Havent seen alot of Frye, but from what Ive seen he makes some really bad decisions. Do Browns homers believe in this guy as the franchise qb?

He's not even played a full season. His OL can't block, either. He's also been playing with enough pain that he couldn't even lift weights until after the bye week. I think any QB would be more likely to regress in this environment.I see Frye as a stopgap. Actually every QB under center for the Browns will be a stopgap until the OL improves. Until then, it'll be a revolving door.

Whether he will be a franchise QB has yet to be determined, but he does show the pontential. His decision making is about normal for young QB. As many times as he's been hit though, my biggest concern is his durability. He could wind up being another Couch if the OL doesn't protect him better.
