Cleveland set on Quinn (1 Viewer)

Since when did teams start announcing to the media who they are going to draft?

"These rumors are making me thirsty."

Exactly, even if they really are "locked in" on Quinn, they're not letting it out to Don Banks.

SI.com's Don Banks says the Browns are "locked in" to Brady Quinn with the third pick of the draft.

He says the owner, GM, and coach are in agreement. And no one will remember if Banks was wrong when we find out for sure on Wednesday.

No, Don Banks didn't say that. Here's what he said:
A league source told me the Browns "are locked in'' on taking Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in their No. 3 slot. Cleveland will bypass Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, even though the Browns signed ex-Ravens rusher Jamal Lewis to just a one-year deal.

While Cleveland owner Randy Lerner has been in favor of Quinn for a while now, Browns general manager Phil Savage is now said to be firmly on board with the pick, even though he and head coach Romeo Crennel are entering a potentially pivotal third season running the organization. In some ways, drafting Quinn, a rookie franchise quarterback, buys Savage and Crennel more time to turn around the Browns' flagging fortunes.
"League source" = nobody within the Browns organization.

I can believe it. Home town boy. Loads of talent. More to this than just talent. There will be a boatload of Quinn jerseys sold in Ohio if he goes there....
The Browns take in more than enough in revenue. They are more concerned about wins, to keep that revenue flowing. They won't draft Quinn to ride the pine this year. They need instant gratification.
I don't think the new regime is interested in instant gratification. I think they are going to do what they believe is best for the team in the long haul. Romeo is perhaps the only one who feels the need to win now. However, he is not the one making the pick.

Is it safe to say that most Browns fans will be unhappy if the Browns draft Quinn?
No, I wouldn't say that. Only us smart ones. We could trade the #3 for Peyton Manning and I wouldn't be happy. We need to fill the holes before we think QB.I will say that Peterson is higher on the list than Quinn with most fans. From all the polls I've seen though, Thomas is more popular than either one of them.

Phil Savage yes, Randy Lerner no.Phil is always looking long term, but Lerner is feeling the heat from the fans. I think that is why Phil floated the rumor that Lerner is making him go after a QB. Lerner is actually telling him the opposite. Phil is the king of smokescreens.

Also from Rotoworld:

ESPN's John Clayton says "it appears" the Browns will take either Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas with the No. 3 overall pick.

Clayton expects Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn to go either No. 6 to a team that trades into Washington's spot or 7 to the Vikings. Of course Quinn could also go No. 1 overall to Oakland. We'll just have to wait and see.

Actually, as a Browns fan that watches and follows every move the team makes, this is the first media report that makes any sense to me. As much as all media wants to try to build up that we need a QB, WE DO NOT NEED A QB. We already made that mistake once with Tim Couch, and if you ask 100 Browns fans if we should draft Quinn or Russell, 80 of them would say NO. Expect the team to draft Thomas if he is there, and Peterson if he is gone. Its all that makes sense.

I want to agree with this, but it's pretty tough to know what the front office is really thinking.

That would be a smart pick by the Browns.

Quinn will be a solid NFL QB for many years. Tussell may have better potential but is a few years away.

Ok, so according to various sources the Browns will take Quinn or Joe Thomas or AP. Pretty clear now....

Just great.

If Quinn goes to Cleveland he'll be the next Tim Couch. You can't expect a young QB to survive behind a pathetic o-line.

What a waste of talent.

EXACTLY! If you put Payton Manning behind that crap line, he would easily have the worst year of his career and probably be one of the worst QB's in the league. Its not going to happen, the Browns will not draft a QB with the #3 pick, I am 95% positive about this. It would be a terrible pick.

Two thumbs up to the Browns for keeping the intrigue alive at the top of the draft. The Browns storyline to me is much more interesting than any Lions/Bucs/CJ thing.
