I would take JD Drew straight up for any of those guys. What do you want for Kevin Gregg, Prince Fielder?
I'll probably end up going for Pedroia or Castillo but saves seems like a more valuable commodity than avg. which is basically all those guys bring. Drew hasn't done jack and the fact that the Sox tried to get Dye tells me that they're willing to make him a 4th OFer the rest of the way. Gregg might just be in the top 10 closers in the league. Why wouldn't I expect more than anyone on that list for him?
A few things.1-How many people are in your league? The reason why closers aren't rated very high is that they primarily only score in one category, and everyone has a few. Couple that with the fact Gregg wasn't even a closer when the year started and most owners, rightfully so can not give up much for one, and pick one up from the free agent heap.2-I wouldn't want Castillo. He is a free agent in one of my leagues, as he doesn't put up huge steal numbers any more. His average is nice, but no power or rbi's. Pedroia is so-so at best. If you want one of them that's fine....but I'd rather keep a closer.3-Jermaine Dye is right handed. Drew is a lefty. The reason they went after Dye is to get another right handed big bat in their lineup. Willy Mo Pena has been a disappointment this year. Sure Drew hasn't had a banner year, but at any point he could break out and put up huge numbers. You want to buy guys low, and Drew for a closer you no longer need sounds more than reasonable. No way they gave Drew the contract they did to make him a 4th outfielder.4-Gregg is an unproven commodity on a good streak. No way anyone is going to give you full value. If you like him, keep him and deal Jones. I own Jones in one league and would jump at an offer to trade him. I've shopped him around for the last month, no one wants him. In fact, I usually reserve him (I also own Putz, Valverde and Saito in that league).
